SUMMIT OVERVIEWPresented by Ultimate Medical Academy, the UMA K-20 Summit will provide passionate educators the opportunity to participate in a dynamic conversation on innovation in online and blended learning to support the success of traditionally underserved students. Designed for practitioners, the Summit is focused on collaboration to optimize learning models that engage, retain and prepare students to-and-through post-secondary graduation and workforce career pathing.

Bringing together a wide-range of “doers” from all sectors representing primary, secondary and post-secondary education, the Summit will explore this year’s inaugural theme, “all means ALL.” The UMA K-20 Summit features a three-track series – Leadership, Student Services, and Curriculum and Instruction – within which you, as an attendee, have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions, promising practices and expert panels while contributing to a nationwide dialogue focused on access, persistence and advocacy.

Jamila Lyiscott is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME) of Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Situated in Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, YPAR, Multiliteracies, and Black Literature, Jamila’s scholarship and activism work together to prepare educators to sustain diversity in the classroom, empower youth, and explore, assert, and defend the value of Black life. Jamila is the founder and co-director of the Cyphers For Justice (CFJ) youth, research, and advocacy program, apprenticing inner-city youth as critical researchers through hip-hop, spoken word, and digital literacy. As an adjunct assistant professor, consultant and motivational speaker, Jamila has lectured and lead community empowerment projects widely,

both locally and internationally. Jamila received her Ph.D. from Teacher’s College, Columbia University and her M.A. from Hunter’s College.

Dr. Michelle R. Weise is the Executive Director of Sandbox Collaborative, the R&D arm of strategy and innovation at Southern New Hampshire

University. Michelle’s work in fostering innovation is an extension of her prior work as the Senior Research Fellow in higher education at the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation. Her book, Hire Education: Mastery, Modularization, and the Workforce Revolution, co-authored with Clayton Christensen, describes the disruptive potential of online competency-based education aligned to workforce needs. Michelle’s commentaries and research have been featured in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Boston Globe, Inside HigherEd, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and PBS Newshour. She has also served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs for Fidelis Education and taught at Skidmore College and Stanford University. Michelle is a former Fulbright Scholar and graduate of Harvard and Stanford.

This presentation will share 17 semesters of experience directing, managing and facilitating an upper level online course for the underserved in the discipline of histology (the microscopic architecture and function of the human body). A six-minute course commercial will be featured.

Chris Lehmann is the Founding Principal of the Science Leadership Academy, a progressive science and technology high school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Science Leadership Academy is an inquiry-driven, project-based, 1:1 laptop school that is considered to be one of the pioneers of the School 2.0 movement nationally and internationally. Science

Leadership Academy is the Dell Center of Excellence in Education. The school was recognized by Ladies Home Journal as one of the Ten Most Amazing Schools in the U.S. and has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School from 2009 through 2013. Chris is co-founder and Chair of the Board of Inquiry Schools, an organization dedicated to helping more schools transform into a more inquiry driven model. He received his Master’s from Teacher’s College, Columbia University and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
