Fred Murphy • Strength Coach
Experience: Murphy enters his second season with the Mud Hens and sixth in the Detroit Tigers organization. Prior to joining Toledo, Murphy spent four seasons in Double-A with the Erie SeaWolves. The South Haven, Michigan native earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and a Master’s degree in Science Physiology at Western Michigan University.

Chris McDonald • TrainerExperience: McDonald returns for a third season with the Mud Hens and 16th season within the Detroit Tigers organization. McDonald has worked his way up the ranks through the Tigers organization, servicing the Gulf Coast League Tigers, Connecticut Tigers, and the Advanced-A Lakeland Flying Tigers. McDonald was then promoted to the Erie SeaWolves in Double-A baseball, where he worked for eight years. Named the Eastern League Trainer of the Year in 2011, McDonald also spent seven years as an Athletic Trainer in the Dominican Republic and one year in Venezuela. McDonald graduated from Bowling Green State University.

The only native Toledoan enshrined in the Hall of Fame. “Battery mate of Christy Mathewson with the NewYork Giants, he was one of the game’s most natural players and might have starred at any position. The “Duke of Tralee” was one of the few Major League catchers fast enough to be used as a leadoff man.”

Norman Thomas “Turkey” Stearnes (Elected in 2000 as a centerfielder) Captained the 1945 Toledo Cubs of the United States Baseball League (Negro). “One of the Negro Leagues’ most feared hitters, he hit better than .300 in 14 of 19 seasons, collecting six home run titles and led the league in triples four times. A graceful center fielder as well, he played in four East-West All-Star Games. Played 11 seasons for the Detroit Stars, also excelling with the NewYork Lincoln Giants, Kansas City Monarchs, Chicago American Giants and Philadelphia Stars.

Kirby Puckett (Elected in 2001 as a center fielder)Batted .263 in 21 games with Toledo in 1984. “A proven team leader with an ever-present smile and infectious exuberance who led the Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991. Over 12 seasons hit for power and average, batting .318 with 414 doubles and 207 homeruns. Also a prolific run producer, scored 1,071 runs and drove in 1,085 in 1,783 games. A six time Gold Glove winner who patrolled center field with elegance and style, routinely scaling outfield walls to take away home runs. The 10-time All-Star’s career ended abruptly due to irreversible retinal damage in his right eye.”

William “Billy” Harold Southworth(Elected in 2008 as a manager) Appeared in 37 games with the Mud Hens as an outfielder in 1913. Won two World Series titles with the St. Louis Cardinals on three simple tenets that made him one of the greatest managers in baseball history: be patient, platoon players and bunt all the time. Overall, Southworth,who also captured the 1948 pennant with the Boston Braves, compiled a brilliant resume in a 13-year managerial career. He finished with a 1044-704 record and fashioned a .597 winning percentage, fifth on the all-time list and third best among managers with 1,000 wins, trailing only Hall of Famers Joe McCarthy and Frank Selee.

Henry M. “Hank” O’Day (Elected in 2013 as an umpire) At Toledo for a championship (1883) and for a major league (1884) season. He was a solid pitcher and a capable fill-in both the infield and outfield. Though more famous as an umpire, O’Day pitched for seven years in the majors. He managed two years in the major leagues as well but was an umpire for much longer than he was a player or a manager. As an umpire, he was involved in the famous Merkle bonehead play. He was also the home plate umpire in the first World Series game in 1903 and would go on to officiate in 10 World Series.
