2017 REPORT TO THE PEOPLE: ALLENDALE COUNTY Lunch and Learn Series Continues Regional Peanut Meeting Held A regional Peanut Production Meeting was held in Allendale on February 17, 2017. Producers from Colleton, Allendale, Hampton, Jasper, Bamberg, Barnwell, Orangeburg and Aiken counties attended, Dr. Anco, Extension Peanut Specialist, covered varieties and insect control in peanuts. Dr. Smith, Extension Economist covered Financial Reports and Loan Opportunities. Dr. Kirk, Extension Precision Agricultural Engineer, discussed Improving Harvest and Precision Agricultural. Growers asked a wide array of questions and gained knowledge for the upcoming peanut season. The Clemson Extension Peanut program has a total economic impact of over 3 million dollars by allowing growers to choose the most effective disease management programs. Even though peanut acreage in Allendale and surrounding counties have fluctuated due to contract prices, peanuts are still an important crop. Also, input costs have increased substantially leading producers to search for current and cost effective information http://www.clemson.edu/allendale The Allendale County Lunch and Learn program has allowed Allendale County residents to have an opportunity to share in learning and making Allendale County a better place to work and live. Audreyauna Hay, Clemson Extension Program Assistant, received a 2017 grant from the Tri County Foundation that allows Allendale citizens to receive up-to-date educational programming at no charge. In March, participants learned how to use basil and mint plants while cooking and were able to take a plant home to apply what they learned. In May, members learned about diabetes and knowing the symptoms from Angela Youmans with Lowcountry Healthcare. In August, Clemson Extension Home Economist Christine Patrick, presented a program on salsa preparation using fresh tomatoes. Finally, In October the participants learned how to prepare for an emergency with the Allendale County emergency preparedness office. The Lunch and Learn series continues to fulfill a community need. The participants show their gratitude by contributing donations for each program. We ask that any community member that has a special talent and would like to share with us please call (803)584-4207. Peanut farmers learn best practices from Clemson Extension staff. Allendale citizens work together to make salsa.

Clemson Extension continues to deliver forestry programs through the Salkehatchie Forestry Association. This active organization is an affiliate member of the S.C. Forestry Association and offers many educational opportunities to clients interested in forestry. The Salkehatchie Forestry Association held two meetings on the following topics: the new Holly Hill Woodchip Mill Facility and the recent discovery of Emerald Ash Borer in SC. Average attendance for these meetings was 25 landowners and forestry professionals. Clemson Extension also supports the citizens of Allendale County by use of an Area Extension Forestry & Natural Resources Agent who provides advice on forest management and wildlife management through habitat modifications and food plots. This agent also aids with forestry related issues including disease and insect identification, pond issues and urban tree questions.

Clemson Extension offers a variety of hands-on programs to the community.

Local forest landowners learn best practices from Clemson experts.
