President’s Message

Greetings BTS members! I hope you all have had an excellent first

half of 2017, and are looking forward to the rest of the year. I know for BTS, the sec-ond half of 2017 promises to be very busy with our Annual Broadcast Symposium in October at the Key Bridge Marriott in Ar-lington, Va. One of the exciting additions to the Broadcast Symposium is a Student

Poster Session which I believe will provide the attendees and authors with an opportunity to interact and network. We are also seeing growth in BTS chapters globally, which I hope will lead to more of our chapters taking advantage of the BTS Distinguished Lecturer Program. At this year’s IBC Show we will be hosting three BTS sponsored students from the St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television who wrote and presented papers on broadcast technology and were se-lected as winners this year. These students will be attending the IBC Show as part of the Rising Stars program.

And this is not to say that BTS didn’t have an extraordinarily successful first half of 2017. At the April, 2017 National Associa-tion of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas, BTS sponsored a student in the NAB Technical Apprenticeship Program. I had the opportunity to address the group at the show, and was pleased to see so many young people interested in the field as a career. In June of this year, I also had the opportunity to attend and par-ticipate at our Broadband Media Systems and Broadcasting Sym-posium (BMSB) hosted by the University of Cagliari in Italy. Also in June, we awarded the Jules Cohen Scholarship to a graduate student at Oklahoma State University.

As you can see from the activities this year and what we are planning for next year, there is a focus at BTS on reach-ing out to younger people. One of the common problems that professional membership organizations are dealing with is the aging of the membership. I see and hear about this within IEEE and at the other professional organizations of which I’m a member. In the early days of my career, my mem-bership in BTS provided me with access to broadcast-specific knowledge that I could apply in my work, and which made me a more knowledgeable, and therefore more valuable en-gineer for the organizations I worked for. The landscape has changed considerably in the intervening years, and now much of this information and more is accessible via the Internet. Clearly that changes the value proposition regarding mem-bership, at least for new members.

As I said, in my early career my BTS membership provided me with access to information and knowledge that was very important as I started working in the field. Now it’s many years later, and I while I consider myself to be a lifelong learner, I have access to the Internet and frequently use it to research projects and technologies just as almost anyone else can. Yet I’m still a BTS member and I still value that membership.

Why?This is an easy question for me to answer, but a very difficult

one to quantify. I remain a member, and actually contribute be-cause there are a host of intangible elements to my member-ship and participation that have even more value to me than the information that’s available. The intangible elements have developed over time and are more about relationship than anything else. Years of membership at BTS have provided me with a network of colleagues and friends that have been, and continue to be, invaluable in my ongoing development.

As I said above, I’m a lifelong learner, but if my goal is to merely gain knowledge and store it away, I can easily become the equivalent of a book that sits on a shelf unopened. But if I seek the counsel of colleagues and peers on how to apply the knowledge I’ve gained, then I not only grow, but I also contrib-ute and make a difference. That is why I stay a member of BTS and why I continue to value my membership and participation.

Bill Hayes, BTS President
