The Panthers have 17 letter winners back from last season and will have 14 newcomers competing for playing time as well this year. • Among the top letter winners returning for the Panthers this season is center fielder Joseph Duncan. Duncan returns as the Panthers leading hitter from last season (.332 batting average). Duncan enters the 2017 season with a pair of active streaks. He currently holds a 14-game on-base streak and a nine-game hitting streak. • Eastern Illinois is playing its 111th season of intercollegiate baseball. EIU has an all-time record of 1,731 wins and 1,515 losses. Head Coach Jason Anderson is in his 2nd season as the Panthers skipper after being hired to take on the role in the summer of 2015. Anderson picked up the first win of his coaching career with a 10-8 victory over No. 12 Arkansas in 12 innings on March 5, 2016. • The Panthers return a large core of their pitching staff from last season including two weekend starters in Brendon Allen and Michael McCormick. Allen and McCormick logged the second and third-most innings pitched on the staff last season for the Panthers.
• Chase Thurston is another quality arm the Panthers will have for the 2017 season. Thurston spent the beginning of last season pitching out of the bullpen before becoming a starter during the second half of the season.
• During the OVC Baseball Coaches Preseason media teleconference, coach Anderson talked about how the Panthers, “Went out and found some good JUCO talent that we expect a lot from” including Dougie Parks, Matt Albert, and Hunter Beetley, who will look to compete for playing time right away.
• The Eastern Illinois baseball team will face South Alabama for the first time since the 2004 season this weekend. South Alabama finished the 2016 season 42-22 overall and 21-9 in the Sun Belt Conference after ending their season in the NCAA Tallahasee Regional.
• Travis Swaggerty returns as the leading hitter for South Alabama after batting .303 (66-for-218) during his freshman campaign. Swaggerty finished tied for the team lead in runs scored last season with 47.
• The Panthers will go with their redshirt-senior veteran starting pitcher Brendon Allen in game one at South Alabama on Friday night. Michael McCormick will get the start in game two on Saturday. Dustin Wilson will earn his first start as a Panther in the series finale on Sunday.
• South Alabama will go with their senior veteran starting pitcher Randy Bell on the mound in the season opener. Bell finished 2016 with a record of 7-1 and an ERA of 2.45 in 88.1 innings pitched. Left-handed pitcher, Zach Melton, will get the start in game two. Melton pitched at Central Alabama CC last season. Will Eiland will get the nod in the series finale after pitching at Wallace State-Hanceville (Ala.) CC in 2016.
• Following their three-game series at South Alabama, the Eastern Illinois basebal team will travel to Central Arkasas next weekend (Feb. 24-26) for a four-game series in Conway, Arkansas.
• For only the second time in conference history, the Ohio Valley Conference will expand their end-of-season Conference Tournament to an eight-team field beginning the 2017 season. The last time the conference tournament was an eight-team field was during the 1996 season. The OVC Tournament will also take place at a new location this season. The new host site for the OVC Tournament will be Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
