Please join the National Association of GovernmentCommunicators in congratulatingour 2017 Communicator of theYear, Chris Poynter.
Chris is the Director of Communications for the Officeof the Mayor of Louisville, Ky. In his nomination letter, MayorGreg Fischer detailed the leadership and ingenuity Chrisused to help the city and theworld celebrate the life of thelate Muhammad Ali.
Over seven days in June 2016,Chris rallied his team to honorAli, Louisville’s beloved nativeson. Although they had extremely short notice, Chrisand his team organized a flaglowering ceremony outsideMetro Hall shortly after theboxing superstar’s death.
They also staged an event called, “I Am Ali,” a festival for children and families thatdrew 15,000 attendees. In addition, they organized a tribute bike ride and an outdoor showing of the movie “Ali.” In the midst of all those activities, the teamcreated and enacted a social media strategy to tell the story of the week throughimages and videos, reaching millions of people across the nation and around theglobe.
Chris earned the award for his ability to recognize the opportunity to showcasethe city of Louisville on a global scale across a broad-spanning application of public affairs strategies and tactics.
Mayor Fischer said that Chris’ efforts earned accolades from across the globe forthe way Louisville handled such a momentous event, including from Ali’s widow.Lonnie. “This week was an exceptional circumstance, and Chris helped us maneuverthrough it beautifully,” Fischer said Fisher, noting that as communications director,Chris has built an experienced team with diverse skills and talents.

Similar to the 2016 release of the Ghostbusters movie, the City of Franklincreated four short videos and graphic components for social media that communicatethese main issues to the citizens of the City of Franklin. The release was timed withthe release of the new movie and the city capitalized on the #Ghostbusters,#Greasebusters theme. These videos use a humorous tone to convey the educationalmessage about the many items that can clog pipes, causing problems for citizensin their neighborhoods.
