Preface
TheOrangeParkHighSchoolBandProgramisopentoallinterestedstudentswhodemonstratethedesire,ability,andproperattitudetobeamemberofthegroup.Studentsdesiringmembershipmusthavepermissionfromthedirector.Studentswillbeplacedatthediscretionofthedirector.Itshouldbeunderstoodthateveryonewillhavea fair and equal opportunity for band participation. However, from time to time, itmay become necessary toexclude or dismiss those students who fail to meet the band’s standards. All students enrolled in band areexpectedtoparticipateinbothmarchingandconcertband,unlessextraordinarycircumstancesexistthatpreventsuchparticipation.AsamemberoftheOrangeParkHighSchoolBandprogram,youareexpectedtosethighgoalsforyourselfandtheprogram.ThesuccessofYOURbandfirstrequiresthatyouare100%dedicatedandcommittedtodoingyourpartinhelpingtheteamtoreachourgoals!Therewardsofreachingthosegoalsareimmeasurableinthedevelopmentofourstudentsaswell-roundedhumanbeings.Inaddition,itisourphilosophythat“theprocessismoreimportantthantheproduct.”Thisplacestheemphasisonthedevelopmentandgrowthofeachindividualstudent,notjustonspecificperformances.MembersoftheOPHSBanddevelopmusically,emotionally,mentally,socially,andphysicallyduringtheirtimeintheprogram.Objectivesinclude character building, commitment, cooperation, dependability, determination, self-discipline, leadership,punctuality,respect,responsibility,andself-control.Thishandbookcontainsguidelines,regulationsandinformationtoensurethesuccessofYOURband.Pleasereadthishandbookcarefullysothatyoumayunderstandattheoutsetwhatisexpectedofyouandwhatyoushouldexpectasamemberoftheband.Knowledgeofthecontentsofthishandbookwillprovideeachstudentwithanunderstandingofhowhe/shemaybestcontributetotheproductivityandoverallsuccessoftheprogram,resultingintheoptimumindividualexperience.

TheImportanceofAttitude
The greatest single factor thatwill determine the success of any individual or organization isattitude. It takesintense dedication to reach goals. Students should learn to discipline themselves to practice daily, onfundamentals in concentrated and routine practice. The “right attitude”must be present alongwith sincerity,concentration,anddedicationasthebasicfoundationofsuccess.Suchanattitudemakesanartisticperformanceinevitable and ends up being the factor that makes the difference between a high quality organization and amediocregroup.Youwhoareinbandareafavoredfew.Thisorganizationcandoalotforyou.Makethemostofit,everyrehearsalandperformance.
HowToDemonstrateaPositiveAttitudeintheBand:�Bethefirst,neverthelast,torehearsals.�Alwayshavetheneededandrequiredrehearsalitems.�Wearappropriaterehearsalattire-propershoes,shorts,etc.�Demonstratedesire,spirit,andenthusiasmforlearning,working,andcontributing.�Beoneofthosestudentswhoisalways“there”;apersonwhocanbecountedon.�PrepareandmasteryourpartINADVANCE–onlyyourbestisgoodenough�Refrainfrommakingcomments,orcarryingonaconversation,duringrehearsals.�Maintainsilenceandeyecontactwithinstructororofficersincharge.�Use“High-IntensityListening.”(ListenandSilentarespelledwiththesameletters).�Stopandlistenimmediatelywhencut-offisgivenormoveiscompleted.�Exhibitenthusiasmandpatienceforpractice-understandtheneedforrepetition.�Ifyouexperiencefailure,analyzeitandmakeaplantoimproveandsucceedthennexttime.�Turnworkintofun.Enjoyrehearsing--hot,cold,rainyorhot(becauseitwillgethotanditwillrain!)�Trylearningsomethingnew,andimproveeveryday.HaveaGrowthMindset.�Doyourbesttomakethosearoundyoulookandsoundbetter.�Behumbleinyoursuccess.Demonstrateclassinallsituations.

TheImportanceofDiscipline
Becauseofthenatureoftheorganization,disciplinemustbestrict,outofnecessity.MarchingBandisrootedinregimentedmilitarytradition. Studentsandparentsmustbewillingtoaccepttheideals,principles,andrulesoftheorganization.Becausebandmembersareconstantlyonpublicdisplay,eachmembermustalwaysbeawareoftheimportanceofgoodbehaviorandsocialetiquette. Anymisconductcastsadirectreflectiononthebandandschoolandmaywellundothegoodworkofmanystudents.Anystudentwhocastsdiscreditonthebandbytheirconductoractions,eitheratschooloronatrip,shallbesubjecttodismissal fromtheband inaddition tootherdisciplinaryactionsbytheschool.

Responsibility
The Orange Park High School Band will seek discipline through personal responsibility and student leadership.Thesearehighideals,andtheyworkwiththetopprogramsinthecountry.Withindividualattentiontoattitude,discipline,andsomebasicrules,wewillcontinuetomatureanddevelopourgreatbandprogram:
• ThereputationoftheOrangeParkHSBandProgramwillbebuiltonqualityofcharacterandmusicianship.Weexpectyourverybestatalltimes!
• Alwaysshowuptoclass/rehearsalwithalltherequiredmaterials(i.e.instrument,music,pencil,etc.)• Allstudentsareexpectedtobehaveproperlyatalltimes.YouarerepresentingOrangeParkHighSchool
andourcommunity.Anyoneguiltyofgrossmisbehaviormaybedismissedfromtheprogram.• Absolutelynohazing(verbalorphysical),orbullyingofanypersoninanyformwillbetolerated!• All school rules will be enforced. The music department and school authorities will deal with any
infractionoftherules.
OverviewofExpectations
• Attendallrehearsalsandperformances–theminimumexpectationis100%• Beontimeforallclasses,rehearsals,andperformances.Thisusuallymeanstobeearly.• Beproactive,notreactive!• Bepreparedforrehearsalsandperformances.Haveinstrument,music/drillbook,pencil,extrareeds,
valveoil,mutes,etc.Ifastudent’sinstrumentisintheshopforrepair,thestudentisrequiredtohavea“loaner”instrumentissuedfromthemusicstore.Ifthisisnotpossible,thestudentmustcontactMr.Pikuritz,aheadoftime,inordertosecureanotherinstrumentthattheycanuseduringclass.Nothavinganinstrumentisunacceptableunlessthereisanextremehardship.
• Keepinstrumentandequipmentintop-notchperformancecondition.• UnderstandthedutiesofLeadershiptoworkWITHyouandnotagainstyou.AnyoneonCouncilisan
extensionofMr.Pikuritz.Pleasefollowtheirlead.• Practiceregularlyathome(atleast20-30minutesperday).Takeprivatelessonsifatallpossible.Practice
timeshouldbespentonscales,music,andetudesassignedbytheDirectororprivateinstructor.Theuseofametronomeandtunerwhilepracticingishighlyencouraged!
• Keepthebandfacilityandmusicbuildingneat,orderly,andfreeoflitter.Storeinstrumentsandmusicinassignedplaces(lockers&cabinets),NOTONTHEFLOOR.Donotleavebooksorpersonalbelongingsinthebandroom.Yourlockersareforyourinstrumentsonly.Lockerswillbecheckedperiodicallyandifanynon-musicorfooditemsarefoundtheywillberemoved.
• Keeplockerslocked!Iftheyareunlocked,youwilllosetheprivilegeofkeepingyourlocker.• Ifyouusesomething,PUTITBACK!(i.e.stands,chairs,musicfolders,etc.)• Keepupwith,andberesponsiblefor,themusicandequipmentissuedtoyou.• Fulfill“FairShare”(BandFee)obligationbythedeadline.Fundraisingactivitiesareprovidedtohelp.• Demonstrateapositiveattitudeatalltimes.• Mostimportantly,HAVEFUN!Wehavefun,byrehearsingandperformingatthehighestlevel.The

HomePractice
Homepracticeplaysanimportantpartinthemusicalgrowthofanymusician.Further,educationalresearchhasproventhatastudent’sabilitytoperformonamusical instrumentwill improveataratedirectlyproportionaltothequantityoftimeandeffortexpendedinpractice.However,theQUALITYofpracticeisalsoimportant.Practicedoesn’tmakeperfect.PRACTICEMAKESPERMANENT.OnlyPERFECTpracticemakesperfect(i.e.practicingthecorrect thingswithproper technique,etc.) So,don’tpracticebadhabits,anddon’tplaysomethingsloppyoverand over, because it will just get sloppier. Practice slowly, while gradually increasing the tempo but keepingeverythingelseperfect.Ifthatdoesn’twork,practiceonenoteatatime,thengraduallyputthemtogether.Onenoteatatime,thenonecountatatime,thenonemeasureatatime,thenonephraseatatime,thenonesectionatatime,etc.AnythingworthdoingisworthdoingSLOWLY!
Itisnotenoughtopracticeuntilyoucanplayitright.Youmustplayitrightoverandover,untilyoucan’tplayitwrong!

StudentsareexpectedtoabidebytheClayCountyCodeofStudentConduct,OPHSRulesandtheOPHSBandRulesatalltimes.Anyinstrumentorequipmentnotbelongingto,orspecificallyassignedtoyouisstrictlyofflimits.IfitisNOTYOURS,DONOTTOUCHIT!
• Nofood,gum,ordrinkisallowedatanytimeinthebandroomorinthemusicbuilding.Bottledwaterisallowed&encouraged.
• NOP.D.A(PublicDisplayofAffection)whileinuniformorrepresentingtheband.• Nogumisallowedatanyrehearsal,performance,orwhileinuniformorpartialuniform.• Duringtheregularschoolday,thebandfacilityistobeusedforregularclasses,rehearsals,sectionals,and
pre-arrangedhelpsessionsonly.Youmaycometothebandroomtopracticeatanytimewithawrittenpass(oremail)fromyourteacher.
• Nostudentsinthedirector’sofficeatanytime,unlessitisforofficialbusiness.Ifcommunicationwiththedirectorisabsolutelyneeded,pleasewaitoutsidetheBandOfficedoorandwaitforeyecontactandacuetoenter.Donotbargeintotheoffice.ThisisMr.Pikuritz'sprofessionalworkspace.

AttendanceAttendanceatallrehearsals&performancesisREQUIRED.Thisisaperformance-basedactivity.Theexpectationis100% attendance. As amember of the band program, you play a very important part in each band function.Inasmuch as the band works as a finely trained team, it is essential that every member be present for ALLfunctions,whichincluderehearsals,concerts,MPA,competitions,footballgames,parades,andout-of-towntrips.Anymemberwhoisabsentmakesthebandlesseffectiveandhasanadverseeffectonthemoraleandsuccessofthebandasawhole.Band isaco-curricularactivitythat ispartof theelectivefineartscurriculum. Theterm‘co-curricular’meansthatrehearsalsandperformancesoutsideoftheregularschooldayareapartofthatcurriculumandthereforean integral part of your overall participation grade. Medical appointments, work schedules, and vacationsshould be scheduled around band rehearsals, performances, and other activities. Individual needs will beaddressedastheyoccur,thereforethissystemissubjecttomodificationbythedirector.
THEONLYEXCUSEDABSENCESFROMBANDPRACTICEORPERFORMANCESARETHOSERECOGNIZEDBYTHESCHOOLSYSTEMFORNORMALATTENDANCEPURPOSES(SEVEREILLNESS,FAMILYEMERGENCY,&RELIGIOUSHOLIDAYS),
ANDREQUIREPROPERDOCUMENTATION.ALLOTHERABSENCESWILLBEDEEMED'UNEXCUSED'.
ProcedureforAbsenceNaturally,sicknessandotherhardshipsmakeitnecessarytomissonrareoccasions.ThePARENT/GUARDIANmustnotifytheDirectorasfarINADVANCEaspossibleifastudentmustmissarehearsalorperformanceby:
1. EmailingMr.Pikuritzwiththedate&reason.
2. Studentsmustprovideawrittennotetothedirector...NOEXCEPTIONS.Afterfollowingtheprocedureabove,theabsencewillfallintooneofthreecategories:
1.PERMITTED:Advancenoticegivenwasatleast10schooldays,subjecttothediscretionofthedirector.(Studentdoesnotlosepointsfortheactivity/event,onlywithdirectorapproval)
A'permitted'absencemayNOTbegrantedforadayonwhichthebandgivesapublicperformance
2.EXCUSED:Reason-familyemergency,illness,orreligiousholiday(Studentlosespointsfortheactivity/event,butcanmake-upthegradebycompletinganalternativeassignmentasfeltnecessarybythedirector)
3.UNEXCUSED:Anyabsencethatisnot'permitted'or'excused'(Studentlosespointsfortheactivity/event;nomake-upopportunity,automatic'0')

ConsequencesforAbsences
1.Thefirstunexcusedabsencetoaperformanceorco-curricularrehearsalwillresult inbeing“benched”fortheupcomingperformance.2.Thesecondunexcusedabsencewillresultinacallhometoparents/guardians.2.ThethirdunexcusedabsencewillresultinDISMISSALfromtheperformingorganization.3.Missingtwobandclassesinoneweekmayresultinbeingbenchedfortheperformancethatweek.4.MissingANYco-curricularrehearsalsmayresultinbeingbenchedfortheperformancethatweek.5. The following deductionswill occur to the student's participation grade as consequences for being tardy or absent:-5forbeingtardy;-10foranunexcusedabsence
A"benched"studentperformerstillattendsallbandfunctions,sitinthestands,andplaysinuniform.Pleaseunderstandthatrehearsalsandperformancesinbandareequivalenttoquizzes&examsinotherclasses.Sincethereisnowaytotruly“make-up”theseevents,missinga rehearsalorperformance isequivalent tonottakingaquizorexam,andstudentswillthereforeearna0%astheirgrade.However,anyco-curricularrehearsalorperformancemissedforanacceptablereason(excusedorpermittedabsence)canbemadeupbycompletingan assignment approved by the director. FAILURE TOMAKEUP AN EXCUSEDABSENCEGRADEWILL RESULT INLOWERINGOFTHEBANDGRADE.Alternate assignment (for excused absences): Students with an excused absence from a performance will bepermittedto"make-up"theperformancegradebycompletinga3-page(double-spaced)writingassignmentofthestudent&director'smutual choice. Thisoption forperformance-relatedmake-upworkwill onlybeextended tostudentdentswithexcusedabsencesthatareapprovedbythedirector.Allunexcusedabsencesfromaperformancewillautomaticallyearna‘zero’,withnooptiontoremedythegrade.

ProcedureforTardies
Tardinesswillnotbetolerated.Tardiescausedelays intimeschedulesandarediscourteoustoyourfellowbandmemberswhomustwaitforyou.Alwaysarriveatleast15minutesearlyfromthescheduledtime,sothatyouareready toperformat the scheduled time.All tardiesareunexcusedunlessexcusedby valid reasonsor awrittenpass.Theprocedurefortardiesisthesameasthatofanabsence.

Only reasons of GRAVE EMERGENCY should be used for missing a performance or rehearsal. Thesearrangementsmustbemadeinadvance.Remember:Excuses,evengoodones,willnotproduceaSuperiorband.Instead,eventuallywewillhavealotof
understandingandaterribleband.Thebestexcuseintheworlddoesnotgetthejobdone.
AcademicEligibility/CommitmenttotheBandProgram
• Inordertoparticipateinbandactivities,abandstudentmustmaintainaminimumcumulativeGPAof2.0.Any studentwhoseGPAdrops below2.0maybe suspended fromactivities andbecomes ineligible forawards.
• A student must be in attendance at school at least a ½ day on the day of, or the last day before aperformance.
• Astudentmustattendthelastrehearsalbeforeaperformanceinordertobeeligibletoperform.• Ineligible students are to attend band rehearsals and take rehearsal notes or do alternate work, as
assignedby theDirector. Theyare to attendperformances, sit in the standsandhelpwithequipment.Theymaynotparticipateintheperformance.
This program runs for the full year. Considering the level of commitment required, participation in other co-curricularorextra-curricularactivitiesmighthavetobelimited.Although,studentsareencouragedtoparticipateinotheractivitiesthatwillhelptomoldthemintowell-roundedstudents(i.e.NationalHonorSociety).

Sports/OtherActivitiesItismybeliefthathighschoolisatimewhereyoushouldbeallowedtopursueacoupleorfewthingsthatinterestyou. However, it isalsoatimetolearnthat ifyouspreadyourselftoothin,youmightnothaveenoughtimeorenergytoachieveanyofthosethingstoyourfullpotential. Nostudentwillbedeniedmembership inthebandprogrambecauseof interest inotheractivities,aslongasthestudentconsistentlymeetsallrequirementsoftheband program. By being a part of the Orange Park High School Band you are committing yourself to its FULLinvolvement.Ifyouareinterestedinplayinganysports,youMUSTtalkwiththebanddirectorATTHEBEGINNINGOFTHEYEAR.Most conflicts can be resolved and worked-out ahead of time with careful/responsible planning. It is theresponsibilityofthestudent,NOTthedirector,toresolveconflicts/schedulingissues.Beproactive,notreactive!
VarsityLetterRequirements
Band members have the opportunity to earn a varsity letter during their first year, and a service pin eachadditionalyearofparticipation.Thecriteriaareasfollows:
1. ThestudentmustparticipateinMarchingBandandSymphonicBandduringtheentireyear.2. The student must attend ALL scheduled rehearsals and performances unless the absence is excused.
Studentswillbeallowedone(1)unexcusedabsencefromrehearsalduringtheyear.Thiswillhelpthosestudentswhomighthaveanunavoidableconflict.
3. The student must adhere to all rules and regulations of the band. Flagrant violations will result inimmediatelossoftheopportunitytoearnavarsityletter.
ALLLETTERPOLICIESAREATTHEDISCRETIONOFTHEBANDDIRECTORANDMAYBEMODIFIEDATANYTIME

MethodofEarningaGrade
AllBandclassesareconsideredtobeco-curricularwhich,bydefinition,meansthatstudentsareexpectedtomeetandcompleteallclassroom/school-daydemandsaswellasthoseextra-curricularoroutsideoftheclassroomactivities(i.e.after-schoolrehearsals/sectionals&weekendperformances).Studentsearnpointstowardtheirgradeforallbandclassesbyattendingandparticipatinginthefollowing:
1. AttendanceatALLrehearsals.EveryStudentstartseachquarterwith100points.Foreveryrehearsalthatismissedadeductionof10pointswilloccur.Foreveryrehearsalthatastudentistardyto,adeductionof5pointswilloccur.
2. AttendanceatALLperformances.Adjudicatedandpublicperformancescannotberecreated.Foreveryperformancethatismissedadeductionofafulllettergradefortheentirequarterwilloccur.IfastudentisunabletoattendALLperformances,theyshouldreconsidertheircommitmenttothisactivity.
3. Playorperformancetest.Thesewillbeutilizedfromapass/nopasssituationupto100points
pertest.a. Ifstudentsdonotpassaplayingtest,theywillnotparticipateintheperformance.
Duringmarchingseason,studentswillberequiredtocompletepass-offs.Untilthepass-offissatisfiedforeachgivenweek,thestudentwillnotparticipateintheperformance.Rather,theywillstandonthesidelineduringtheperformance.
4. Participationinclassandgeneralconduct.Eachstudentbeginseachquarterwith100
participationpoints.Five(5)pointscan/willbedeductedforvariousreasons,suchasnothavingmusic,pencil,instrumentetc.,ordisciplineissuesthatmightoccur.

All-StateBands-AuditionsareheldinSeptember.StudentswhoqualifywilltraveltotheFloridaAll-StateConferenceinTampainmid-January.Theywillrehearsewiththetopstudentsinthestateandpresentaconcertattheendoftheclinicunderthebatonofanationallyrenownedconductor.ClayCountyHonorBand-Studentsareselectedbyaudition.StudentswhoarechosenwillrehearsewiththetopstudentsfromtheClayCountySchoolSystemandpresentaconcertinearlyJanuary.FSUTri–StateFestival-Studentsareselectedbydirectorrecommendationonly.StudentschosenforthesegroupswillrehearsewithtopstudentsfromFlorida,GeorgiaandAlabamaandpresentaconcertattherespectiveuniversityinDecember.Studentsarefinanciallyresponsibleformealsandroomswhileoncampus.SoloandEnsembleMusicPerformanceAssessment(MPA)-HeldannuallyinFebruary.Studentsmayprepareamusicselectionfordistrict-levelevaluation.ThosewhoearnaSuperior(playingaGradeVorhighermusicliterature)willqualifyforStateSolo&EnsembleMPAinMarchorApril.
RehearsalProcedures
Rehearsaltimeissovaluable,andeverymomentmustbeusedfortheactualrehearsalpurpose.Ifyoudelaytherehearsalforevenoneminute,youhavewastedagreatdealoftimebecauseeveryothermemberofthebandhasalsobeenforcedtowasteoneminutebecauseofyou.Thefollowingguidelinesareusedinallfineorganizationsandarethefoundationofourefficientrehearsalprocedure:

IfyourinstrumentisNOTinthestorageroom,donotenteratall!YOUMUSTKEEPLOCKERSLOCKED.Ifyourinstrumentisinthestorageroom,thentakeouttheinstrument,andleavethecaseinyourlocker.FiveBasicRulesforMusicRehearsals: 1.Youmustalwayshaveapencil. 2.Cut-offwiththeconductorimmediately;neverkeepplayingjusttoplay. 3.Makeeyecontactwiththeconductorwheninstructionisbeinggiven. 4.Notalking—silentrehearsalsensurethatwemaximizeourtimetogether. • Requireditems:Instrumentingoodworkingorder,musicinorder,pencilandnolessthan2workingreedsforwoodwinds,necessarymutes,valveoil,etc.
• Beforerehearsalbegins,warm-upindividually(longtonesonlownotesandscales)untilthedirectorstepsontothepodium.Atthatmoment,allplayingandtalkingwillstop.YourfullattentionMUSTbegiventothatpersonandnothingshouldbeallowedtodistractyou.

11.Whenthesignalisgiven,thebandwillstandandfilerow-by-rowoutoftheseatingareaanddowntothefieldstagingareatopreparefortheperformance.12.Attheconclusionoftheperformance,thebandwillfilebackintotheseatingarea.Remainstandinguntileveryoneisathisorherseat.13.Oncethebandisseated,memberswillcarefullypositiontheirinstrumentssothattheyaresecure.Then,thebandwillbedismissedtousetheconcessionstandandrestroomsduringthethirdquarterbreak.Thispolicywillcontinueonlyiftheprivilegeishandledwithmaturityandbandmemberscanmanagetobebackintheirseatsandreadytoplayontime.DoNOTgointothegeneralseatingareaofthestands.Youarenotallowedtogositwithotherfriends/familywhilewiththeband.Ifyouwanttohangoutwithyourfriends/familyduringthebreak,have

14.Behaviorinthestands:sitandbehaveappropriatelyinthestandsatalltimes.RememberyouarerepresentingOrangeParkHighSchool.However,havefunandshowalotofschoolspirit!Thatiswhatthisisallabout.Negativestandsbehavior(behaviorthatbringsnegativeattentiontothegroup)willresultintheremovalforthedurationofthegame(senthome),lossofthirdquarterbreak,participation&performancegradededuction,and/orpossibleremovalfromtheprogram.15.Concessions:Pleaseuseyourbestjudgmentaboutwhattoeatanddrink.Avoidfoodswithsugarsanddye,asthesecandamagetheinstruments.Alwaysrinsewithwaterbeforeplayingyourwindinstrument,regardlessofwhatyouate.Ifanaccidentoccursandyouruniformisstainedordamaged,youshouldimmediatelyreportthistoaParentVolunteerorStaffmember,otherwiseyoucouldbechargedforthepurchaseofanextrauniformwhetherornotyouareatfault.16.Attheconclusionofthegame,passalltrashtotheendoftherow(waterbottles)andmakesureyouhaveallyourbelongings:music,lyre,gloves,hat,etc.Largerinstrumentswillbepackedupandloadedonthetruck,andallotherswillgodirectlytothebustopackuptheirinstrumentsandgetreadyforthetriphome.AParentVolunteerorStaffMemberwillcallroll,andoncecomplete,thebandwilldepartforhome(ifanawaygame/competition).17.UponarrivalatOPHS,everyonestaysonthebusesuntilthedirectorgivesfinalinstructions.18.Procedureforwrap-up:

• Whentravellingonschoolbuses,eachbandmemberisresponsibleforplacinginstrumentsandequipmenttobeloadednexttotheequipmentvehicleinthedesignatedlocation.Smallerinstruments(flutes,clarinets,altosaxophones,trumpets)willalmostalwaysbecarriedontothebus.

Theprocedurewillbethesameaslocalgamesexceptforthefollowing:Fordistancetravel(2hoursormore)wewilltakegarmentbagswithuniformsaswellashelmetboxesonthebus.Helmetboxeswillnotbeplacedinsidegarmentbags.Wewilldresswhenwearriveatthestadiumorperformancevenue.
EnforcementofRegulations/CONDUCT
Thesimplestmethodofenforcingbandrulesandregulationsistowithholdtheprivilegeofparticipationinourbandforaspecifiedperiodoftime.Onlythedirectormaytakethisaction,thoughthebandcouncilmembersmayrecommendsuchactionbyamajorityvote.Withholdingmaybedoneinseveralways:
1. Replacingapersonintheshow.Thiswouldbedoneprimarilyinthecaseofdisruptivebehavior,negativeattitude,notbeingprepared,ormultipleabsences.
2. Inthecaseofextrememisbehaviorordisrespect,forthegoodoftheband,thestudentcouldbeexpelledfromthebandprogram.
Apenaltywillbeadministeredforalltardies,misbehavior,disrespect,disruption,defiance,disobedience,off-taskactivity,inattentiveness,destructivenessoranyactsthatcastdiscreditand/orembarrassmentuponthebandortheschool,nomatterthereason.Thestudentwillhavetodopush-ups,runlaps,orsomesortofpunishmentinadditiontothelossofapre-determinednumberofpointsfortheinfraction.Forseriousandcontinualinfractions,bandmembersmaybealsobesuspended.Thismeanstheywillbeexpectedtoattendallrehearsalsandperformancesoftheband,butwillnotbeallowedtoparticipateuntiltheproblemthatcausedthesuspensionhasbeenrectified.Failuretocomplywiththetermsofthesuspensionwillresultintheexpulsionfromtheband.InfractionsofconductmentionedaboveorthoselistedbelowaregroundsforsevereschoolboarddisciplinaryactionincludingsuspensionordismissalfromOrangeParkHighSchooland/orthebandprogram:

Replacementof“lost”musicisexpensiveandtime-consuming.Eachbandmemberisresponsibleforthemusicissuedtohim/her.Thefollowingguidelineswillbeobserved:MarchingMusic
• NOSHARING!Eachstudentwillhavehis/herownmusic.• Eachstudentistoplacehis/hernameonEACHpieceofmusicintheupperrightcorner(printneatly).Flip
foldersmustalsobelabeled.• Whennotinuse,thefolder~withallmusicinit~willbekeptinthestorageareainyourlocker(ifitwill
fit).NEVERLEAVEYOURMUSICOUTINTHEBANDROOM!• Replacementofmusicshouldfollowthefollowingprotocol.Tellyoursectionleader,whothentellsthe
librarianwhatneedstobecopied.ConcertMusicYouwillreceiveaconcertbandfolder.Makesureyourinstrumentandpartarelistedonthefolder.NOTHINGBUTPENCILshouldbeusedtowriteonthemusic.Somebookswillbeshared,sopleasetakecare.Sectionleadersmaycollectfoldersafterrehearsaltotraveltotheperformancevenue.

SchoolInstruments
Allschool-ownedinstrumentsmustbecheckedoutthroughan‘EquipmentRequestForm’andgiventothedirector.Onceissued,theinstrumentbecomestheresponsibilityofthestudentforpropercare,maintenanceandprotectionfromdamageortheft.Thestudentwillberesponsibleforandchargedforanydamagesorlosstotheinstrumentduringtherentalperiod.Thisincludesdrumheads,rims,etc.Duetothesharednatureofpercussioninstruments,allpercussionistswillsharecollectivelyintheresponsibilityfordamageorlossofpercussioninstruments/equipment.EquipmentManagersareinchargeofoverseeingtheinventoryandassistingwithschool-ownedinstrumentcheckoutandcheck-in.
InstrumentMaintenance
Allinstrumentsmustreceiveregularmaintenance,andthebasicsareprovidedbelow.Formoredetailedinformation,seethedirector.WoodwindsGENERAL
• Swabtheboreaftereachplayingsession.• Investinasmallscrewdriver.Makesureallrodscrewsarenotloose(butnottootighteither)• Takeittoatrustedinstrumentrepairshopforafullcleaning,padcheckup,andkeyoilingonceeveryyear.• Wipethekeysandbodycleanwithasoftcottonclothafterplaying.
FlutePeriodicallycheckthepositionofthetuningcork(insideheadjoint).SingleReeds(Clarinet,Saxophone,etc.)
• Soakreedsinwater(30seconds-1minute)beforeplayingonthemtoavoidcracks.Useafilmcasewithwaterinitratherthansaliva.Waterdoesamorethoroughjobofsoakingthereed.
• Rinsethemouthpiecedailywithwarmwaterandavoidmouthpiecebrushes.• Alwayshavesparereeds.Rotatethemsothatyouhaveatleastthreebroken-inatatime.• Buyareedcase&mouthpiececapandusethem.Theywillpayforthemselvesbyallowingyour
reeds/mouthpiecestolastlonger.• Saxophoneend-plug(saxophonesonly):Putitinplaceoftheneckwhenyoustoretheinstrumentinthe
case.Itprotectsthebridgeoftheoctavemechanism.DoubleReeds(Oboe,Bassoon,etc.)

• Runlukewarmwaterthroughtheinstrumentatleastonceamonth.Takeittotallyapartandgiveitabathatleastonceayear.Neverusehotwater.
• Neverusebrassorothermetalpolishonbrasslacquerfinish(shinygold)instruments.Useacleancottonclothandwatertowipeinstrumentsclean.Onsilver-platedinstruments,useanon-abrasivesilverpolishsuchasInternational,Twinkle,orWright's.
• Mouthpiece:Putitinandgiveitasmallturn.Don’tforceit.Ifitbecomesstuck,takeittoyourdirectorforremovalusingaspecialtool.Ifyoutrytoremoveityourself,youwilldamagetheinstrument.Donotusepliersorawrench!
• Usetuningslidegreaseonalltuningslides.• Periodicallycheckcorksonwaterkeystomakesurethattheyaresealingproperly.• Occasionallyvacuumyourcasetokeepsandanddirtfromscratchingtheinstrumentfinish.
Piston-ValveInstruments(Trumpets,Mellophones,Baritones,Euphoniums,&Contras)
• Usefreshvalveoilasneeded.• Besurefingersremaincurvedwhileplayingsothatthevalveactionisstraightupanddown.Thiswill
preventunevenwearonthepistons.• Checkfeltstomakesurethattheyarenotwornorcompacted.Replaceasneeded.
Rotary-ValveInstruments(FrenchHorns,SomeConcertTubas)• Userotaryoilonly.• Learnthepatternforreplacingthestring.• Usetromboneslidecreamsuchas'Super-Slick'or'Trombontine'andaspraybottleofwateronslide.
Trombones• SlideCream:asmallamountofcreamshouldbeappliedtothebottomandworkedintotheentireslide.
Dothisonceeveryfewdays.• WaterSpray-Bottle:Sprayyourslideregularlyduringrehearsals.Itmuststaywet.Ifitmakesanykindof
noisewhenitmoves,sprayit.*Note:Iftrombonehasanattachmentthatusesarotarytrigger,seeRotary-ValveInstrumentinstructionsabove.Percussion
• Avoiddamagetoheadsorbarsbyusingthepropersticksorbeatersforeachinstrument.Becomefamiliarwithpropertechniquesofchangingheads,tuningandroutinemaintenance.DonotdosoonschoolinstrumentswithoutpermissionfromthePercussioninstructorsorBandDirector.
• Keepinstrumentscleananddry.Watercandamagethewoodshellsofdrumsandbarsofkeyboardinstruments.
• Wipefingerprintsoffhardwareandrimsaftereachuse.• Lowerthetimpanipedalstotheleasttensionaftereachuse.Whenmovingthem,graspthembythe
arms,nottherim.
