within the changing Canadian health care

Welcome to the 2017 – 2018 Annual Report

This year, we demonstrated a robust

commitment to our students, to

patients, our employees and the

public, as we set out to translate our

institutional goals into programs,

resources, advancements, and

opportunities.

For our students, we set out to

strengthen and enhance the

curriculum by ensuring that

course outlines better align with

graduate exit competencies, we

restructured chiropractic technique

course material and added more

opportunities for technical practice

with the Force-Sensing Table

Technology (FSTT®) and hands-on

opportunities with the addition of

the Anatomage® virtual dissection

table. We offered new tools to

educators and equipped them with a

sophisticated lecture capture system,

enabling them more versatility in

course delivery, while students can

now reap the benefit of anytime

access to lectures delivered on video

or in print.

We have increased the breadth of

patient care experience provided

to students in the clinical program

through the addition of specialty

programs designed for special

patient populations. Additionally,

we have invested in the transition

from plain film to digital diagnostic

imaging allowing students to

use state of the art technologies,

thereby further enhancing their

diagnostic capabilities.

Through a redesigned website,

we now offer the public a more

nimble platform that allows ease of

use and responsiveness to mobile

phones and tablets. At the same

time, we have updated our CMCC

Supply Centre website to enhance

navigation and customer experience.

In addition, enriched software for

clinical analytics and operations

has been developed in house to

allow us to further enhance clinic

management and recordkeeping

functions.

We are innovating for improved

outcomes through a flourishing

FSTT® program developed in our

Division of Research. An impressive

number of these tables will serve

to educate students on 11 college

and university campuses around the

world.

To create a healthier workplace,

we developed an enterprise

risk assessment framework and

implemented a process designed to

assist us in reinforcing those areas of

business which leave us vulnerable.

A valuable exercise, it supports

decision making and enhances the

organization’s ability to understand,

identify and proactively manage

risks.

We are proud that strong support

from our friends and supporters,

along with prudent financial

management, has allowed us to pay

off our long-term debt several years

before originally scheduled. At the

close of the fiscal year, we had only

one month left to pay on our loans,

so as of this writing, we are officially

debt-free!

As educators, we have a

responsibility to encourage and

support upcoming generations of

the profession to be responsible to

the environment we all share, as

well as to their patients. With this

in mind, our campus, repurposed

and renovated with sustainability

issues in mind when we bought

it in 2004, will now benefit from

an official committee dedicated to

enhancing waste diversion, reducing

energy waste and procuring

environmentally responsible

supplies. We hope that our example

will inspire others to likewise make

sustainability a priority.

CMCC remains committed to

providing a world class learning

environment and a leading edge

curriculum to graduate successful

students who will become the

chiropractic leaders of the 21st

century. CMCC continues to

cultivate an environment in which

students can realize academic and

personal success and has been

rewarded by an application rate

of four students for each available

seat. Following are some of the

activities we engaged in during the

2017-18 academic year to optimize

course delivery and increase

the variety of tools available to

students and instructors.

Improving the quality of the

student experience at CMCC by

strengthening support services

and programs

CMCC and CMCC Students’ Council

entered a five-year Memorandum

of Agreement, establishing the

operating framework for both

organizations in pursuit of joint goals.

The first project that came from the

agreement was the refurbishing of a

new student lounge.

CMCC continues to make student

mental health a priority, fostering

conversations about health and

suicide prevention and participating

in events such as Bell Let’s Talk

Day. Other activies included a

stress management workshop, an

exam de-stress yoga activity and

the popular visit with therapy dogs

during exams.

A new working group on sexual

violence was formed this year and has

finalized a policy on sexual violence to

protect the CMCC community.

Developing resources for student

learning

CMCC’s Health and Sciences Library

has licensed BMJ Best Practice,

a clinical point of care database

Our commitment to students

specializing in the integration of

evidence-based medicine with

direct patient care. It contains over

6,700 diagnostic and treatment

guidelines and reference links to

support learning and research.

Strengthening competence

and confidence and clinical

judgement in manipulative/

adjusting skills

The Chiropractic Technique

department has restructured its

assessment of manual skills, so

that assessments are completed

earlier and students have more

opportunity to practice and master

all manual skills taught. The

addition of in-class assessments

ensures that students have

feedback on each of the 12

procedures taught, rather than a

reliance on formal assessment of a

select few.

Extending the use of ExamSoft™

ExamsoftTM was introduced in 2016

to Year I students as an electronic

resource to facilitate examinations.

It reduces waste, provides instant

feedback and makes it easier for

faculty to integrate feedback into

the curriculum. ExamsoftTM has

been used in examination periods

annually since 2016 and was

extended to Year III students this

past year.

Its use in Diagnostic Imaging for

the first time this year was highly

successful, saving time, providing

better images and decreasing

the number of proctoring hours

required.

Preparing students for life in

practice

The Clinic Objective Structured

Clinical Exams (OSCE) have been

expanded to include a broader

range of scenarios that include

mental health issues and systematic

infections among others to better

prepare graduates for practice.

Aligning course learning

outcomes with graduate and

exit competencies

Revised chiropractic program

graduate competencies were

approved by the Institutional

Affairs Committee in February.

The revised competencies are

now built upon the CanMEDS

2015 framework, which has been

adopted by the CCEC for new

accreditation standards.

Enriching our teaching tools

During the 2017-2018 academic

year, 21 faculty members

completed CMCC’s Teacher

Education Program, guiding

instructors in developing an

effective teaching strategy based

on current theories and practices

of adult education. One on one

mentorship has been provided to

many faculty members with regard

to teaching practices and exam

preparation.

Optimizing the use of

technology for engagement and

success

An Education Technology

Committee was initiated this year.

Its mandate is to share plans for

implementation and assessment

of educational technologies,

while ensuring that these new

technologies best suit the needs of

students.


Our commitment to patientsClinical internship is the final stage in students' education, during which CMCC offers

a variety of clinical environments and an increasingly diverse range of specialty

programs and equipment to prepare them for practice. CMCC interns come to clinic

with over 2,500 hours of training and education across the biological sciences and

professional chiropractic courses, arriving to clinic with a minimum of 336 hours

of hands-on technique practice, and access to almost limitless hours of additional

practice using the Force Sensing Tables in the Sim Lab. Clinical internship is the final

stage in their education, during which CMCC offers a variety of clinical environments

and an increasingly diverse range of specialty programs and equipment to prepare

them for practice. During the 2017-18 academic year, a number of strategies were

implemented to increase the breadth of their experience, making them better

prepared for future patient care.

Developing specialty programs

to diversify knowledge transfer

to CMCC students and enhance

patient care through the

introduction of:

GLA:D

CMCC Clinics partnered with GLA:D

(Good living with Osteoarthritis

Denmark), an 8 week evidence-

based education and exercise

program for people with hip

or knee osteoarthritis. This

positions CMCC clinics to follow

internationally established best

practices and guidelines for

patients while exposing such

programs to students.

Spinal Stenosis Boot Camp

Several members of clinical

faculty have been trained in

Spinal Stenosis Boot Camp, a

new treatment approach for

improving mobility in patients

with lumbar spinal stenosis.

The program combines various

elements of manual therapy,

exercise and self management and

has been developed by Dr. Carlo

Ammendolia, an adjunct faculty

member at CMCC.

A program focused on TMJ

Disorders

A program for the treatment of

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain

syndromes has been developed by

clinician Dr. Brad Muir, who has been

translating his research into practice.

The program includes treatment,

outcome measures and information

packages as well as strategies for

interns to work with dentists as

partners in the community.

Digitizing diagnostic imaging

The diagnostic imaging clerkship

has been fully converted to digital

format to provide students with tools

to allow them to develop skillsets of

interpretation with software which

they are more likely to use in practice.

Rehabilitation improvements for

Campus Clinic

The rehabilitation room in the Campus

Clinic was renovated to create a

space that would meet the needs

of the patient population as new

rehabilitation protocols advance in

the curriculum. This area now houses

two Cox8 flexion distraction tables

and OptoGait assessment equipment

which, when paired with a treadmill,

allows all aspects of gait to be

analyzed.

Addition of an observation rotation

at Scarborough Rouge Hospital

CMCC has initiated an observation

rotation at Scarborough Rouge

Hospital’s fracture clinic as part of

its effort to expand the scope and

diversity of clinical education by

exposing students to a greater number

of practical scenarios and learning

situations.

Variety of practica for graduate

students

Currently, students of CMCC’s

graduate program attend clinical

practica at six hospital settings, one

industrial setting, a private clinic,

and various sporting events. In

addition, a new research practicum

was recently established with the

University of Southern Denmark.


Offering our best to the public and employees

CMCC’s virtual and physical

presence tells the story of CMCC

to the public and provides the

means through which we educate

chiropractors and treat patients,

and is where employees spend

the majority of their waking

time. Through the 2017-18

academic year, CMCC.CA and

the CMCC Supply Centre website

were modernized. This same

year, CMCC engaged in a risk

assessment program, ensuring

the continued high functioning of

the organization and the safety

of students and employees.

Extending outward to our

environment and community,

CMCC began to formalize its

sustainability program.

A new face for CMCC.CA

CMCC launched a new website

with a new content management

system. The new site is

responsive and can be viewed

on smartphones, an increasingly

popular way to access the site, and

incorporates major improvements

in managing online payments

and event registrations. Newer

technology and modern design

ensures continued ease of use.

Updated website for the CMCC

Supply Centre

The CMCC Supply Centre and

Bookstore has transitioned to its

new online webstore which allows

for online payment, including

shipping costs. That should reduce

the amount of time staff must

spend for what was previously a

manual process.

Reducing risks for a healthier

workplace

CMCC kicked off a comprehensive

Enterprise Risk Management

program during this period. At

the end of the process, CMCC will

have a risk registry and pursue

training for employees and the

Board of Governors regarding

their roles and responsibilities

in safeguarding any areas of

vulnerability to the ongoing

functioning and wellbeing of

CMCC students and employees.

Improving the health of our

workplace

For the past two years, CMCC

has quietly undertaken steps

to reduce waste, improving its

recycling program and reducing

water and electricity use through

efficiencies. This past year, CMCC

struck a sustainability committee

with the aim to align institutional

values with those of AASHE, the

Association for the Advancement

of Sustainability in Higher

Education, as a benchmark of

sustainability practices against

which CMCC can measure itself.

Replacement of internal lighting

to more energy efficient LED units

was completed the summer of

2017, resulting in a savings of

5,600 kwh.

Innovations for improved outcomes

Increasingly, we are realizing

that research is disseminated

in many ways outside of

traditional publications. Through

partnerships and innovations, we

can enhance our own knowledge

and have a greater impact on

future research through the

commercialization of research

outputs. Innovations to our own

systems improve operations,

increase information about

processes and enable us to

continue to improve them.

FSTT® program flourishes

The FSTT® (Force-Sensing Table

Technology) program has

experienced significant growth

and productivity this past year.

FSTT® and HAM® (Human Analog

Mannequin) received additional

status as registered trademarks

in the United States for an initial

period of 10 years (i.e., until 2028).

Changes were also made to the

table to streamline its production

and reduce manufacturing costs.

Enhanced in house software for

clinic analytics and operations

Version 2.0 of Praefectus, the clinic

file auditing software program

developed in house has been

enhanced to better meet Clinic

Management Team operational

needs. As well, it provides better

analytics to inform process

reengineering to optimize the system

and its usage to enhance the quality

of patient care.

Introducing Panopto® Lecture

Capture

Panopto® lecture capture technology

was introduced in June of 2017.

The lecture capture solution can

record or broadcast instructional

activities, provides a useful resource

for students and faculty and is an

accessible digital source for review

of learning material. For example,

online videos of all manipulation

and myofascial release procedures

performed by tutors and taught in

class are now available for students

to view at their leisure.

Panopto® has experienced high

adoption rates, with 80% of

undergraduate course coordinators

now recording their lectures.

Optimized with search functions,

Panopto® allows students to review

specific areas of lectures as well as

access a transcript of the lecture

material, assisting with language

comprehension as well as facilitating

different learning styles and continuity

of learning due to absence or illness.

Virtual dissecting through

Anatomage®

In 2017, CMCC became the first

post-secondary educational

institution in Ontario to implement

the Anatomage® virtual dissection

table into its curriculum. This tool

is being used to augment learning

in Gross Anatomy, Histology,

Pathology, and potentially Diagnostic

Imaging. Anatomage® provides

tools unavailable in other forms of

dissection, for example, separating

and reviewing each anatomical

system and structure. Students can

use Anatomage® independently

for review and enrichment of their

learning.

Financial ReportCMCC continues to strengthen our financial position which provides stability to deliver quality programming and services

and invest in innovative teaching and research technologies. A key accomplishment is retiring debt.

Following the year-end, CMCC was able to fully retire the debt incurred in 2004 to redevelop the 6100 Leslie Street

Campus. Through generous donations from the membership and chiropractic profession, as well as through sound fiscal

management, CMCC was able to retire $22M of debt in less than 15 years.

Following is a brief description of

each statement.

Condensed statement of financial

position

Describes the overall financial

position or health of the

organization. It itemizes assets

and liabilities including deferred

contributions and fund balances,

and net assets of $37.1 million.

Condensed statement of

operations and changes in fund

balances

States the sources of revenue

and expenses for the General,

Restricted and Endowment funds.

This statement identifies that the

General Fund was enhanced by

the generation of an excess of

operating revenues over expenses

of $1,467,777 (2017 - $1,596,092).

The fund balances reflect

the accumulated surpluses of

the General, Restricted and

Endowment funds. These

represent the net assets of

each fund as reflected in

the Statement of Financial

Position. Fund balances are the

accumulated excess of revenues

over expenditures and interfund

transfers since inception.

Condensed schedule of continuity

of restricted funds

Describes a summary of the

increase in funds, investment

income earned, expenses and

interfund transfers of each one

of the funds which have been

restricted as to their purpose.

CMCC’s restricted funds are the

Canadian Chiropractic Historical

Association (CCHA); Governors’

Club; Research; Capital Campaign

Building; and, Scholarship, Bursary,

and Other Trust funds.

is spent. During the 2018 fiscal

year, the major source of cash
