NOTRE DAME COLLEGE Ousted by Shepherd University, 71-68, in the first round of the 2017 Mountain East Conference Tournament, the Falcons have been selected to finish fifth in the Mountain East Conference in the 2017-18 preseason poll. The team received 86 votes and one first place vote, following a 16-13 overall record, 10-12 in the MEC, in the Falcons’ 2016-17 campaign. Notre Dame’s 16 wins last season marked the third straight year that the team has won 16 or more games in a campaign. The Falcons will rely heavily this season on All-MEC First Team, D2CCA All-American Second Team, and NABC All-District Atlantic First Team selection, senior forward Will Vorhees. The senior concluded his 2016-17 season averaging 26.8 points and 10.3 rebounds, shooting over 52 percent from the floor. The Falcons opened up their 2017-18 campaign on the road as the team participated in the Conference Challenge. Despite senior guard Kyauta Taylor’s 37 points, Notre Dame could not outlast Millersville University as the Falcons dropped their season opener, 107-99, in double-overtime. Notre Dame won its first game of the season against St. Augustine’s University, 99-95, and were able to get their first conference and home victory of the campaign against Concord University. Assisted by Vorhees 33 points, the Falcons defeated the Mountain Lions, 86-76, Saturday afternoon. Vorhees also recorded 10 rebounds and hit 15-of-18 free throws to seal the win against Concord. Through four games, Taylor leads the Falcons in scoring, registering 92 points off of 29-for-65 (.45) shooting. Playing in only two games so far this season, Vorhees has shot 15-for-27 (.56) from the floor. Tim Koenig’s team will follow its matchup with UVa-Wise with a non-conference game against Penn State Allegheny. Following that contest, Notre Dame will resume MEC play taking on a tough Wheeling Jesuit squad inside Murphy Gymnasium. ABOUT UVA-WISE UVa-Wise put up a solid effort to defeat the Blue Knights of Urbana on Saturday afternoon, 71-64. The Cava- liers struggled to get shots to fall in the first half, shooting only 10-for-32 (.313) from the field. UVa-Wise used a second half surge to overcome its first half shooting woes, going 12-for-23 from the floor, hitting 5-of-13 from beyond the arc. Senior forward Taiwo Badmus recorded his first double-double of the season against the Blue Knights, scoring 29 points off of 8-for-14 shooting and grabbed 12 boards in the win. Sophomore guard Chance Sheffey went 5-for-12 from the field and posted 14 points in 32 minutes of play. The Cavs ended the contest shooting 22-for-55 (.40) from the field and added 43 rebounds in their first win of the season. #PROBABLE STARTERS NOTRE DAME FALCONS (2-2, 1-0 MEC) LOCATION: South Euclid, Ohio CONFERENCE: Mountain East HEAD COACH: Tim Koenig (5th season) ..25 #THEBROADCAST @UVaWiseCavs/@UVaWiseMBB @uvawisecavs/@uvawisembb /Highland Cavalier Athletics /UVaWiseAthletics 2017-18 UVA-WISE MEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES UVA-WISE CAVALIERS (1-3, 1-0 MEC) LOCATION: Wise, Va. During the 2016-17 season, Mellinger guided UVa-Wise to nine victories for the most wins in a season since the Cavs’ 2013-14 campaign. For the second-straight year, Mellinger led UVa-Wise to an upset of a nationally ranked opponent inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center as the Cavs took down No. 18 Wheeling Jesuit University 83-81 on Feb. 9, 2016. The Cardinals ended up advancing all the way to the NCAA Atlantic Regional finals before bowing out to national runner-up and top-seeded Fairmont State University. The win came a season after UVa-Wise upset then 14th-ranked King University on Dec. 20, 2015.
Mellinger has developed three all-conference forwards during his time as head coach starting with All-Mountain East Conference First Team selection Deon Boyce
in 2014. Recent UVa-Wise graduate Matt Day claimed All-MEC Second Team honors in 2016 before current Cavalier for-ward Taiwo Badmus (London, England) was named to the All-MEC Second Team in 2017. Boyce and Day each averaged double-doubles in scoring and rebounding their senior seasons as Boyce led the nation in rebounding his final year as a Cav. Day completed his career ranking sixth on UVa-Wise’s all-time scoring list with 1,627 total points and holds the school record for most points scored in a single game (49). Badmus averaged a double-double during his junior year in 2016-17 after transferring to UVa-Wise from Fairmont State. Before being named head coach, Mellinger spent six seasons as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for UVa-Wise. Over that time period he spearheaded the recruiting efforts for the Cavs, and assisted in leading the program to its second Appalachian Athletics Conference championship and a NAIA National Tournament appearance in 2010. In addition to his recruiting responsibilities as an assistant, Mellinger was responsible for developing game plans and strategies, on floor coaching, scheduling, team travel, day-to-day operations, monitoring team compliance and aca-demics, scouting opponents, individual player development, setting up community service projects, and assisting in the coordination of team camp. Mellinger is no stranger to teaching the game of basketball as his father and grandfather were both coaches, making him a third generation coach in the Mellinger family. Blake’s grandfather, Arnold, is the only men’s basketball player to have his jersey retired at Carson-Newman University. The elder Mellinger competed for the Eagles from 1954-57 and scored 1,826 career points, ranking sixth all-time in Carson-Newman history. A native of Glade Spring, Virginia, Mellinger was a three-sport athlete at Patrick Henry High School, lettering in bas-ketball, football and track and field. After completing his career at Patrick Henry, Mellinger accepted an offer to play at fellow NCAA Division II Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina, where he played for Coach Larry Epperly from 2001-2003. He then transferred to UVa-Wise and played for Coach Lee Clark from 2003-2005. Blake served as team captain for the Cavs and went on to become an all-conference player after averaging 12.3 points and five rebounds as a senior. Mellinger scored a total of 536 points and collected 264 in two seasons at UVa-Wise. Mellinger received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from UVa-Wise in 2006. He and his wife Amy gave birth to their second child, Mckenna, in January of 2016 and have a son named Mason. The head coach and his family reside in Wise.

Assistant Coach Drew Absher
Fourth Season
Drew Absher is in his fourth season at the College where he also serves as head coach for women’s golf. In November of 2016, Absher was promoted as head coach Blake Mellinger’s top assistant after serving as second assistant the previous two years. Last season Absher helped guide the Cavaliers through the program’s first year as full NCAA Division II members, in which UVa-Wise played one of the tough-est schedules in the nation.
Highlighted by a 100-87 home win over rival and 14th-ranked King University on Dec. 20, 2015, when the Cavs made a school-record 18 3-pointers, Absher helped coach senior forward Matt Day to one of the best single seasons in UVa-Wise his-tory.
Absher came to UVa-Wise after a four-year basketball career at Virginia Military Institute. While at VMI, he aided the Keydets to the All-Military Classic title and an appearance in the CIT Final Four during his collegiate career.
Prior to attending VMI, Absher was a four-year letter winner in golf and basketball at Davie County High School in Mocksville, North Carolina. He also was a member of the golf team at The Gunnery in Washington, Connecticut, during his post-graduate year. Drew’s younger brother, Davis, was added to the UVa-Wise men’s basketball coaching staff in September of 2016.
Second Season
Davis Absher is in his second season at the College. Absher was added to the Cava-liers’ staff for the 2016-17 season in September 2016. Absher, who is the brother of fellow men’s basketball assistant coach and women’s golf head coach Drew Absher, serves as an assistant coach for the team.
A recent graduate of NCAA Division III member Averett University in Danville, Virginia, Absher came to the College after serving as a basketball camp coach in the summer of 2016 at both Duke University and UVa-Wise. Hailing from Mocks-ville, North Carolina, Absher was a member of the Averett Cougars basketball team where he helped the team to the 2015 USA South Athletic Conference regular sea-son title in 2015. Absher also aided the team in claiming USA South Sportsmanship and Team Service Awards during his four years at Averett. His senior year, Absher was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was invited to join the National Society of Leadership Success.
Off the court, Absher has been involved with several community service projects including volunteering his time at Special Olympics, Big Brothers Big Sisters of
America and Goodwill. Davis was a four-year letter winner at Davie County High School in North Carolina where he was team captain as a senior and named CPC All-Conference. Absher helped lead Davie County H.S. to a 4A Midwest Sectional championship in addition to a 4A Final Four appearance.
