WGHSINSTRUMENTALMUSICPROGRAMPOLICIES Expectations
AsaparticipantoftheWGHSInstrumentalMusicProgram,eachstudentisexpectedtoworktogethertohelpcreateandupholdaPositive,Challenging,Constructive,andInclusivelearningenvironment.Inordertoensurethatthistakesplacestudentswill:
• RespectAll–RespectallparticipantsoftheWGHSInstrumentalMusicProgramandWGHS,thematerialsintheclassroom,allinstruments,etc.
• TryHisorHerBest–Goaboveandbeyondwhatisaskedofyou–worktosurpassone’sownpotential
• BeonTime–Remember“Tobeearlyistobeontime,tobeontimeistobelate,andtobelateisunacceptable.”
Withintheseguidelines,allstudentsareexpectedtobepreparedforallclasses,rehearsals,andeventsby:
• Havingallnecessarymaterials(workinginstrument,music,pencil,etc.)• Followingalldirectionsgivenbyleadersofthegroup• FollowingallrulesandpoliciessetbytheWGHSInstrumentalMusicDepartment,
WaldenGroveHighSchool,theWGHSStudentHandbook,WGHSAdministration,SUSD,andtheperformanceandtravelvenues.
• Settingpositiveexamplesforallmembersofthegroup,andthoseobservingthegroup,astorepresentWGHSandSUSDextremelywell
• HavingfunTheoverallatmospherewithinthemusicrehearsalroomisalwaysexpectedtobepositive.Bullying,name-calling,derogatoryterms,horsingaround,trashingtheroom,andotherbehaviorsthattakeawayfromapositiveatmosphereWILLNOTbetolerated.Anystudentorstudentspartakinginthesebehaviorswillbeaskedtoleaveimmediatelyandfacenecessarydisciplinaryaction.Studentsnotadheringtothepoliciesdescribedinthishandbookwillfacethefollowingconsequences:

Anyadditionalinappropriatebehaviorsorextremeinappropriatebehaviorsandactionswillresultinpossibleoff-campussuspensionorotherdisciplinaryactions.Ifastudentmisseslunchdetention,theywillthenreceiveanofficereferral.

ByadheringtoallofthepoliciesinthishandbookandatWGHS,studentscanensureapositiveenvironmentforalltolearn,resultinginabetterexperienceandstrongeroutcome(performance,testingresults,etc.).Studentsseengoingaboveandbeyondallrequirementswillbeacknowledgedthroughphonecallshome,recognitionsawards,andotheracknowledgementsthroughouttheyear.

LateWorkPolicy
Forallassignments,studentsarerequiredtomeetthesetdeadlines.Lateassignmentswillbeacceptedforfullcreditonlyintheeventofanexcusedabsence.Allotherlateassignmentsmaybeturnedinuptotwodaysafterthedeadlineforpartialcredit(50%onthefollowingday,25%forthesecondday).Aftertwodays,assignmentswillstillbeaccepted,butnotforcredit.
ExtraCredit
Allstudentsareencouragedtocompleteextracreditassignments.Extracreditassignmentsinclude,butarenotlimitedtothefollowing:
MusicEvents–attendapre-approvedmusicevent,andsubmitaprogram/ticketstubandaonepagewriteupwithinoneweekoftheeventArticleReview–findacurrent,pre-approvednewsarticlerelatingtomusicandwriteaonepagecritiqueofthearticlewithinoneweekofthearticlebeingpublishedRecordReview–listentoafullpre-approvedalbum,andsubmitawriteupdescribingandcritiquingeachtrack(minimumonepage)
Pleasenotethatinordertoreceiveextracreditpoints,studentsmustcompleteallnecessaryassignments.ExtracreditassignmentsmustbesubmittedbythesecondtolastFridayofeachquarter.

AcademicEligibilityandM.Y.P.
Forperformancesoutsideofeachendofquarterconcert,studentsmustmaintainacademiceligibilitybymaintainingatleasta“C”(70%)inALLclasses.Ifastudenthasagradebelowa“C,”theywillnotbeeligibletoperform,butwillstillberequiredtoattendtheperformanceunlesstheperformancetakesplaceduringtheregularscheduledschoolday.Mr.Carlewillmonitorstudents’gradesonaweeklybasis.Ifastudentisnotacademicallyeligibletwoweeksinarow,thestudentmayberequiredtoattendafterschooltutoring,meetwiththeteachertocreateaplanofaction,orholdaparent-teacherconference.PleaseseetheAcademicEligibilitycontractformoreinformation.NewthisschoolyearistheMaximizeYourPotential(MYP)period.Thisisatimeforstudentstomakeupassignments,getextratutoring,andgetaheadinclasses.AttendanceisrequiredforallstudentswithanForasassignedbyateacher.Inadditiontoutilizingthistimeforclasses,wewillalsousethistimeforrequiredsectionals.Thespecificdayandtimeofthiswillbedeterminedduringthefirstweeksofschoolandwillvarybysection.TheofficialMYPsectionforMr.CarleisSession1.
DailyClasses
DailyPointsEachclassisworth10points.Inordertoreceivethedailypoints,thestudentmust:
• Haveallnecessarymaterials(workinginstrument,music,pencil,etc.)• Participatethroughouttheentireclassperiod• Completeallnecessarytasksduringtheclass
Ifastudentdoesnotmeetalloftheserequirements,theywillreceive0outof10points.BellWork
BellWorkforallperformingensembleclassesconsistsofreadingthedailyagendaontheboard,settingupchairsandstands,assemblinginstruments,andwarming-upuntilfurtherinstructionsaregiven.
Tardies
Studentsmustbeintheinstrumentalmusicroomandcompletingthedailybellworkwhenthebellrings.Ifastudentisnotfollowingtheseinstructionswhenthelastbellrings,theywillbemarkedtardy,andwillonlybeeligiblefor5ofthe10dailypoints.(Astudentwithanexcusedtardywillstillbeeligibleforthefullamountofdailypoints.)PertheWGHSTardypolicy,studentswillreceiveawarningforthefirsttardy,withfuturetardiesresultinginparentnotification,lunchdetention,andofficereferrals.
Excused/UnexcusedAbsences
Inorderforanabsencetobeexcused,thestudentmustfilloutthe“DailyClassAbsenceForm”onthemusicwebsiteBEFOREthestartofclass.Thestudentwillthenbeeligibletomakeupthemissingpoints.Iftheformissubmittedafterthestartofthe

missedclass,thestudentwillNOTbeeligibletomakeupthemissingpoints.Tomakeupthepoints,studentshouldseethe“MakeUpAssignmentInformation”documentonthewebsite.
BathroomPasses
Studentswillreceivefourbathroompassestouseeachsemester.
Food/DrinkPerWGHSPolicy,thereistobenofood(thisincludesgumandcandy)ordrinksintheclassroom,exceptbottledwater,withoutpriorpermission.Thiswillhelptoensurethatourmusicrehearsalroomsstaycleanandenjoyable!Anystudentwithfood,drinks,gum,orcandywithoutpriorpermissionwillreceiveanofficereferral.
ElectronicDevicesCellphones,tablets,andotherdevicesmayONLYbeusedinclassasaneducationaltool(e.g.fortheuseofatuner,metronome,drillsetting,etc.).Ifadeviceinterruptsclassroominstructionorensemblerehearsal,orifyouarefoundtobeusingitinanotherway,youwillbeaskedtogodirectlytotheoffice.
Rehearsals
Eachgroupmayhaveadditionalrehearsalsoutsideofclass.Eachrehearsalwillbeworth50points,andwillfollowthesameguidelinesasDailyClasses(seeabove).Ifyouwillmissarehearsal,youmustcompletetheonlineRehearsalAbsenceFormatleast48hoursinadvance.Mr.Carlewilldeterminewhetherornotthereasonwillbeconsideredexcusedorunexcused.Ifthereasonfortheabsenceisconsideredexcused,studentswillbeeligibletomakeupthepoints.Ifthereasonfortheabsenceisconsideredunexcused,studentswillnotbeeligibletomakeupthepoints.PLEASENOTETHATALLREHEARSALSWILLBEGINPROMPTLYATTHETIMEGIVENANDWILLNOTENDUNTILTHEGIVENTIME.Forexample,iftherehearsaltimeisfrom6:00pmuntil8:30pm,studentsareexpectedtobereadytorehearsewithallnecessarymaterialsby6:00pm.Therehearsalwillcontinueuntil8:30pm.At8:30pmstudentswillbedismissedtoputtheirinstrumentsaway,ensuretherehearsalareaiscleaned,andthenallowedtoleave.
Performances
Withallensembles,concertsandperformancesareapartoftheentiremusicalprocess.Forallperformingensembles,thefollowingisexpectedfromallstudents:
• Theannouncedcall-timeiswhenthedownbeatwilloccur.Allstudentsneedtobeinuniform,instrumentsready,warmedup,andreadytoperformatthistime.Failuretodosomayresultinlostpoints,asexplainedintheAttendancesection.
• Studentsarenottoplayunlessinstructed.• Studentsaretobeonhis/herbestbehavioruponarrival.Anystudentnotfollowing
therulesandpoliciesasdescribedinthishandbook,mayfacedisciplinaryaction.

• Iftheperformancehasmorethanoneensembleperforming,allstudentsare
requiredtostayfortheentireperformance,unlessotherwisenoted.Supportingone’speersandlisteningtomusicisanimportantaspectofeverystudent’smusiceducation.
• Attheendoftheperformance,allstudentsareexpectedtostaytohelpteardowntheperformanceareaandreturnthemusicroomstotheirproperstate.
Eachperformanceisworth100to500points.Inordertobeeligibleforthefullamountofpoints,eachstudentmust:

Tardies

ExcusedAbsences
Absencesfromconcertsarenotacceptable,exceptinextremesituations.Intheeventofextremeillnessorfamilydeath,thestudentmuste-mail,text,orcallthedirectorPRIORtothecalltimefortheperformance.Inordertomakeupthepoints,thestudentwillcompleteanassignmentdecideduponbythedirector,andmustbesubmittedbytheagreedupondeadline.Pleasenoteintheeventofabsence,documentationfromthenecessarysourcewillneedtobeprovidedinordertobeeligibletomakeuppoints.Intheeventofaconflictingevent,studentsmustcompletetheonlinePerformanceAbsenceFormatleasttwoweeksinadvance.Mr.Carlewillreviewthescenarioandwilldeterminewhethertheabsencefromtheperformancewillbeexcusedorunexcused.Iftheabsenceisconsideredexcused,thestudentwillreceiveanalternateassignmenttomakeupthemissedpoints.
UnexcusedAbsences
Ifastudentmissesaperformancebecauseofareasonotherthanextremeillness,familydeath,orextremecircumstance,he/shewillnotreceivecreditfortheperformance,andwillnotbeallowedtomakeupthepoints.
PerformanceAttire

Allstudentsinaperformingensemblearerequiredtowearallblack,withblacksocksanddressshoes.Forladiesthismayeitherbeamoderateblackdresssuitordress.Pleasenotethatladies’sleevesmustgopasttheshoulder,andthelengthofthedressorskirtmustreachtheground/ankleswhensittingdown.Menarerequiredtowearblackdresspants,withalongsleeve,buttoneddown,blackdressshirt,andablackdresstie.AllconcertattiremustfollowtheWGHSDressCodepolicy.Blackjeans,leggings,andTOMSareNOTacceptableperformanceuniforms.Studentswhoshowupinattirethatdoesnotmeettheabovedresscodewillnotbeallowedtoperformandwillnotreceivepointsfortheperformance.PleasenotethatWGHSdoesnotprovidetheseoutfits.Ifastudentisunabletoprovidehisorherownconcertoutfit,theymustspeakwithMr.Carlebytheendofthefirstweekofclasses.Ifastudenthasaquestionaboutwhetherornothisorheroutfitadherestotheabovestandards,theymaybringinhisorheroutfittothedirector.Ifastudentshowsuptoaperformance,wearingsomethingotherthanwhatisacceptable,pointsmaybelost,andthestudentmaybeaskedtonotperform.
InstrumentsandSupplies
Eachstudentisrequiredtoprovidehis/herowninstrument.Insomecases,aschoolinstrumentmaybeavailableforastudenttocheckout.Eachstudentisalsoresponsibletoensurehis/herinstrumentisinperformingcondition,withallnecessaryaccessories.Ifastudentneedstorentaninstrument,pleasetalkwithMr.Carlefirst.BelowisalistofmusicstoresintheTucsonarea. Studentsininstrumentalclasseswillhavetheopportunitytocheckoutalockertostoretheirinstrumentduringtheschoolday.Thelockersareforthestorageofinstrumentsandmaterialsformusicclassesonly.Thelockersarenottobeusedforthestorageofotherclassmaterialsasstudentsshouldnotbeaccessingtheirlockerbetweeneachclass.Allstudentbelongingsmustbeplacedinsidehis/herlocker.Noitemsshouldbestoredoutsideofthelockersorontop.Nofoodordrinkshouldbestoredinlockers.ItistheresponsibilityofeachstudenttoensuretheInstrumentLockerRoomstayscleanandneatduringtheentireschoolyear.Pleasenotethatonceaweek,thecustodialstaffwillbecleaningthisroom,andthrowingawayanythingNOTinalocker.
Tours/Trips
Overthecourseoftheyear,differentgroupswithintheWGHSMusicProgrammaytraveltocompetitionsorperformancesinandoutsideofthestate.Intheeventofthesetrips,parentsandstudentswillbegivenspecificinformation,expectations,rules,andguidelinesfortheevent.

StudentContractAsaWaldenGrovemusicianwhoisparticipatingintheInstrumentalMusicProgram,Iunderstandthatmyparticipatingintheprogramasanelectiveisaprivilegeandisdependentonmyacceptanceofandadherencetothefollowingrulesandexpectations:
1. Iwillnotuseorbeinpossessionofalcohol,tobacco,oranyotherillegalsubstances,includingbutnotlimitedtoimproperuseofprescriptionoroverthecounterdrugs.
2. Iwillmaintainsatisfactoryacademiceligibilityasdefinedintheperformanceeligibilitycontract.Iunderstandthatfailuretomeettheserequirementswillexcludemefromperformances,trips,andotheractivities.

knowaboutallrehearsals,requirements,events,andperformances.Theseresourcesinclude,butarenotlimitedto,theWGHSMusicDepartmentwebsiteandFacebookpage,theWGHSMusicDepartmentGoogleCalendar,theRemindtextande-mailservice,thein-classroomcalendar;andhandoutsandposters.
7. Iwillmaintainapositiveattitudeatalltimesthroughallrehearsalstoensurethat
myactionstonotdistractordeterfromtherehearsalenvironment.Iwillcometorehearsalspreparedtothebestofmyability.IwillaskquestionswhenIdonotknowwhatisgoingon,howtopracticesomething,orneedhelptobecomeabetterpersonormusician.
8. Iunderstandthatfailuretomeettheaboveitems,thosementionedintheWGHS
MusicDepartmentHandbook,andthosediscussedinclass,mayjeopardizemyparticipationinanypartoftheWGHSInstrumentalMusicProgram.

PerformanceEligibilityContract
AsmembersoftheWGHSInstrumentalMusicProgram,studentsmustfollowallpolicieslistedbelowinadditiontothepoliciessetintheWGHSInstrumentalMusicHandbookandbyWGHSandSUSD.AcademicEligibilityInordertoperformallstudentsmustmaintainacademiceligibility.Inordertomaintaineligibility,eachstudentmustnothaveagradebelowa“C”(70%).GradeswillbecheckedeveryMondaymorning.Thefirstweekastudentreceivesagradebelowa“C”(70%)theywillreceiveawarning,andwillhaveoneweektobringthegradeuptoatleasta70%.Thesecondweekastudentreceivesagradebelowa”C”(70%),theywillbeineligibletoperformuntilthegradeisbroughttoorabovea70%.Pleasenotethatstudentswhoareacademicallyineligiblewillstillberequiredtoattendallpracticesandperformanceswiththerestofthestudents,unlessitconflictswiththenormal,dailyschoolschedule.Theonlyexceptiontothisiswhenastudenthasbeenconsistentlyineligible.Atthistime,aconferencewillbeheldwiththestudent,thestudent’sparent/guardian(s),andMr.Carletoformacontractanddeterminefurtheractionsandexpectations.AbsencesandPerformancesStudentsareexpectedtobeatallrehearsalsandreadytobeingpracticeontime.Ifastudenthasanunexcusedabsencefromarehearsaltheweekofaperformance(concert,footballgame,competition,parade,etc.)theymaybeineligibletoperform.However,studentsarestillexpectedtoattendtheperformanceinordertoreceivecredit.PleaserefertotheWGHSInstrumentalHandbookfordefinitionsofexcusedandunexcusedabsences.DressRehearsalsStudentsmustbeinattendancefordressrehearsals.Ifastudentisabsentfromadressrehearsal,theywillnotbeeligibletoperform.Dressrehearsaldatesaretypicallyanyrehearsaltheweekofaperformance.Mr.Carlewillconfirmthedateoftheserehearsalseachquarter.
