We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us.

Welcome Visitors

Nursery A staffed nursery is availa-ble for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking foun-tain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before com-munion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you. (If you prefer to have your child with you in worship, but are worried that they might disturb the service, we also have a crying room upstairs in the balcony. You will be able to hear and see most of the service there.)

Restrooms are located on the sanctu-ary level just past the library. In ad-dition to Men’s and Women’s rooms there is also a Family room with a changing table.

Count Me In Form is that little slip of paper in your worship folder. We ask all worshipers to complete this each week. Special prayer requests may be made on the back of the form and if there are special “sign ups” you can do that on the back. Place it in the offering plate as it is circulat-ed during the service.

Grace Station is an outreach of the church office available every Sunday morning. Office Manager Christina Bogar (or a volunteer) is there to pro-vide information about our church and to receive information such as address, phone or email changes, prayer requests and news about ill-ness or hospitalizations. Current newsletters and program infor-mation are located there. Look for the “check-in desk” in the church gathering area.

Check out the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church website at www.prlc.org for more information on our congregation, our ministries and many opportuni-ties for service and study. You can also find us on Facebook! Just search for “Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church Community.”

Join us again! We worship every Sunday in the summer at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. and would be honored to have you join us for worship again, soon, and often.

As people made one in the waters of baptism, we believe our lives and faith are strengthened by diversity. We strive to be a community that welcomes people of every ability, age, citizenship status, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, language, life circumstance, marital status, political perspective, race, and sexual orientation. Whether you are a believer, doubter, or seeker, we openly welcome and value you. We celebrate God’s unconditional love and respond joyfully to your presence here. All are welcome. You are welcome.

Today please welcome Pastor Rick Pribbernow, from Open Door Ministries. He is here to formally acknowledge PRLC as a Reconciling in Christ congregation.

Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God

Pre-Service Music Confession and Forgiveness Please rise as water is poured into the baptismal font.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen.

Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another.

(Silence for reflection and self-examination)

Most merciful God, Have mercy on us. We confess to you that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not trusted you with our whole hearts; we have not loved one another in deed and in truth. In your compassion, forgive our sin, and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

With joy, I proclaim to you that Almighty God, rich in mercy, abundant in love, forgives you all your sin and grants you newness of life in Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God!

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray.

Faithful God, most merciful judge, you care for your children with firmness and compassion. By your Spirit nurture us who live in your kingdom, that we may be rooted in the way of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Word God speaks to us

First Lesson: Isaiah 44:6-8

Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let them proclaim it, let them declare and set it forth before me. Who has announced from of old the things to come? Let them tell us what is yet to be. Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? You are my witnesses! Is there any god besides me? There is no other rock; I know not one.

Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 86:11-17

Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk | in your truth; give me an undivided heart to re- | vere your name. I will thank you, O Lord my God, with | all my heart, and glorify your name for- | evermore. For great is your | love toward me; you have delivered me from the | pit of death. The arrogant rise up against me, O God, and a band of violent people | seeks my life; they have not set you be- | fore their eyes. But you, O Lord, are gracious and full | of compassion, slow to anger, and full of kind- | ness and truth. Turn to me and have mer- | cy on me; give your strength to your servant, and save the child | of your handmaid. Show me a sign of your favor, so that those who hate me may see it and be | put to shame; because you, Lord, have helped me and com- | forted me.

Second Lesson: Romans 8:12-25 So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

Gospel: Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

[Jesus] put before [the crowds] another parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ But he replied, ‘No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’ ” Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.” He answered, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Meal God feeds us with the presence of Christ

Preparation of the Table and Offering of Gifts

Blessings Laura Story Offering Prayer

Let us pray.

(Silence)

Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

It is our duty and delight that we should everywhere and always offer thanks and praise to you, O God, through Jesus Christ, who calls us to follow his way of humble service and love. And so with the church on earth, all creation, and the host of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Page 10: 2017-07-23 Lectionary 16 - Phinney Ridge Lutheran Churchprlc.org/.../uploads/2017/07/2017-07-23-Lectionary-16.pdf · 2017-07-20 · church office available every Sunday morning. Office

10

We praise you, all-holy God, our maker, our lover, our keeper, for the universe beyond our knowing, for seas and forests and fields, for creatures seen and unseen, for animals both wild and tame, And for the places we humans call home.

We praise you for your covenant people, for Moses and Miriam and Aaron and for centuries of faithful Christians, for Mary Magdalene, Peter and Paul.

We praise you, O God, for Jesus Christ, who saves us from sin and from evil, granting us grace and setting us free.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Page 11: 2017-07-23 Lectionary 16 - Phinney Ridge Lutheran Churchprlc.org/.../uploads/2017/07/2017-07-23-Lectionary-16.pdf · 2017-07-20 · church office available every Sunday morning. Office

11

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

And so we remember your Word, his life, death, and resurrection and we proclaim the mystery of our faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We pray, O God, for your Spirit.

Bless this meal and all those who share it; empower your people for service; and renew the world with your mercy, with your healing, your justice, and your peace.

We praise you, all-holy God, the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, today, tomorrow, and forever. Amen.

Gathered as one by the Holy Spirit, we pray:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to the Meal Sharing Bread and Cup The Risen Christ feeds us his very Body and Blood as bread and wine. Please come forward to gather around the rails at the direction of the ushers. You may eat the bread and drink from the cup, or dip the bread into the cup. The large cup is filled with wine. The smaller cup is filled with grape juice. Travelling ministers will commune those who are unable to come forward.

If you prefer to receive a blessing instead of receiving communion, please come forward with your hand over your heart. Gluten-free wafers are available. If this is your need, ask the server.

Prayers and anointing for healing are offered in the Chapel, located directly across the communion table. If you would like to pray for yourself or others, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you. You may receive healing prayers before or after receiving communion.

Prayer after Communion Let us pray

(Silence)

God of abundance, with this bread of life and cup of salvation you have united us with Christ, making us one with all your people. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Sending God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world

Blessing

May God, whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, grant you the gifts of faith and hope. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen.

Birgitta of Sweden, renewer of the church, died 1373 Sunday, July 23, 2017 Birgitta married at age thirteen and had four daughters. Widowed at age thirty-eight, she gave all that she owned to the poor, and founded a community of monks and nuns led by a woman. Her work is continued today by the Society of St. Birgitta. James, Apostle Tuesday, July 25, 2017 James and his brother John were the sons of Zebedee, fishermen by trade before their call from Jesus. He was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred, and his death is the only one recorded in scripture (Acts 12:1-2). Johann Sebastian Bach, died 1750; Heinrich Schütz, died 1672; George Frederick Handel, died 1759; musicians Friday, July 28, 2017 These three German-born musicians have done much to enrich the life of the church. Schütz was an early master who focused on settings of biblical texts. Bach wrote over 300 cantatas along with works for organ and instrumental pieces, and has been called the

"fifth evangelist" for the way he proclaimed the gospel in music. Handel's great work, Messiah, is a setting of scriptural texts. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus of Bethany Saturday, July 29, 2017 Friends of Jesus, Mary and Martha are remembered for the hospitality of their home that they offered him—Martha focused on serving their guest, and Mary on listening to him. Their brother Lazarus was raised from the dead

as a sign of the greater resurrection to come. Olaf, King of Norway, martyr, died 1030 Saturday, July 29, 2017 Considered the patron saint of Norway, Olaf went from a life of piracy to becoming Christian and declaring himself king of Norway. He revised the laws and tried to administer them fairly. Driven from Norway in a rebellion, he was killed in battle trying to regain his kingdom.

Announcements Church Farmshare is ON!

In recent Sunday bulletins we’ve been gauging interest in beginning a “Church Farmshare” – a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program – with River Run Farm on the Olympic Peninsula. We got a strong response, and we’re going to move ahead.

Starting on August 3, River Run Farm will bring a generous delivery every Thursday afternoon of fresh, organically grown fruits and vegetables for pick-up here in our Fellowship Hall. The cost to subscribe is just $265 per person for the season, which runs through October 12.

If you indicated interest on one of the count-me-ins, you’ve been sent an email with more details. And if this is the first you’re hearing about it, you can still take part! Contact Parish Communications Manager Christina Bogar to let her know you’re interested. Ethiopian Dinner Fundraising Event for Friendly Water for the World! Please join your friends and neighbors for an authentic Ethiopian meal prepared by Ethiopia Friendly Water representative Abraham Bezabeh on August 4 at 7PM here in the fellowship hall. Admission is by donation, and all funds raised will benefit the work done by Friendly Water for the World, whose mission is to provide training, technology and financial resources to communities in developing countries that struggle to find clean water to drink. There will be a short program after dinner where you can find out more about the work they do. Pick up a free ticket (so we’ll know how many are coming) at the Grace Station this morning. (You can donate at the dinner that night to offset food costs.) For more information contact PRLC member Steve Johnson. St. Luke’s Edible Hope Kitchen Seeking Volunteers Edible Hope Kitchen, a ministry of St. Luke Episcopal Church in Ballard, provides meals each weekday for our homeless friends. There is plenty of opportunity to volunteer to help or donate to the ministry. Edible Hope is especially looking for volunteer help on Wednesday mornings and Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday afternoon/evenings. The evening slots are ideal for students looking for community service hours. Microsoft employees can donate to Edible Hope through Microsoft Give and Microsoft will match the donation 100%. If you would like to volunteer please sing up online at http://signup.com/go/cNqvUpF or mark the box on today’s “Count Me In” form. Second Quarter Giving Statements Please stop by Grace Station today and pick up your family’s giving statement! Ordination Anniversaries on July 30 This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Ordinations of Pastor Al Bruck and the 55th year for Pastor Don Maier. We will celebrate with these two PRLC members on Sunday, July 30th at both services. Don is +Bishop Emeritus of our Northwest Washington Synod and former Pastor at PRLC. Al served during as Visitation Pastor during the Interim period. Since Pastor Maier’s 50th anniversary sort of slipped by without public recognition, we are celebrating both milestones on this Sunday. The guest preacher will be Pastor Bev Piro, former Associate Pastor at PRLC. Don and Al played a big role in Bev’s faith life and development. A reception follows the second service in the narthex.

If you are a member of a PRLC choir or have choral experience, please join the intergenerational choir that will be singing at both services that day. There will be a rehearsal on Wednesday July 26 at 7 pm and another before the July 30 service at 7:50 am. Please mark this morning’s count-me-in or contact music director Valerie Shields at [email protected] or call or text her at 206-715-3033.
