We can measure the surface or area of a flat shape. Place your finger at A on the rectangle. Move your finger from A to B, B to C, C to D, and D to A. This is the perimeter of the rectangle.

Place your hand flat on the rectangle. Cover the surface of the rectangle. This is the area of the rectangle.

We measure perimeter in linear units. This is a linear inch. Use a crayon. Draw over the linear inch.

We measure area in square inches. This is a square inch. Use your crayon. Color the square inch.
