MIDDLE SCHOOL THEATRE PHILOSOPHY
Theatre teaches skills that last a lifetime. Play production involves more than memorizing lines and performing on stage. While you have been a member of our audience enjoying our shows, did you know we were learning life skills? By working on stage and backstage we grew in self confidence, self awareness, initiative, responsibility, sacrifice, dedication, creative thinking, problem solving, goal setting, time management, group dynamics, and group decision making.
We also learned applications of practical skills —carpentry, use of power tools, design ap-plication, painting techniques, interior decoration, public relations, costuming, makeup, accounting, special effects, and sound and video techniques.

Director’s Notes:
On behalf of Viking Drama, I welcome you to our final production of the 2017–2018 sea-son. How fast can you put together a Two Act show? Four weeks is the answer. This is the thirteen season of Dinner Theatre Live and I truly love and appreciate this event. The show changes things up with the inclusion of the Show Choir and Jazz Ensemble, which makes it something special. Dinner Theatre is a bittersweet experience. Sweet, because we get to showcase some truly remarkable talent from Viking and River Trail schools and it is the end, at least for two months, of late dinners and little sleep for many of us. Bitter, because I am watching our eighth graders move on to high school and always leave a tremendous void. We will miss them!
After some remarkable dinner music by the Viking Jazz Ensemble, we open Act I with a number from the Tony nominated musical Rock of Ages. The kids have just been having a blast with this show. For me, it is a return to some great music from my younger days and the clothes and hairstyles that truly defined the 1980s (what were we thing). Next, Show Choir will show us just what they are made of with a delightful selection of pop music. Viking Drama will proudly present Abeni Garner and Zandi Moreano performing their competi-tion duet piece, which received a one or excellent rating. Act I closes with an exciting return to SHREK the musical. I really have a soft spot for this show and cast. Act II we return to the incomparable music of the 1980s with more from Rock of Ages. Once again, we have worked very hard to bring you the best. Enjoy and BUY, BUY, BUY!
Pam Gaul, thank you for making every student look good on stage, even when dancing might not be his or her calling. Mark Oestreich, thank you for giving students a voice and for being my right hand man. Phil Hintz, thank you for coming back and directing our pit band, when your schedule is so very busy. Steven Boswell and Glenn Eikenberry thank you for joining us with your very talented musicians. Thank you to my family for their continued patience and support. Thank you to the MANY parents who have helped with this event, but especially to Mrs. Linna who has gone above and beyond. We couldn’t do this without all of you parents, volunteers and dedicated students.
Finally, students you continually inspire, surprise, and amuse me. Break-a-leg in high school 8th graders. You will be missed. This show belongs to the students who give it life!
