WELCOMEWe are entertainment. It’s our motto for the season and we’re here to make sure you agree.

The past five seasons at the helm of this organization have yielded some of the most rewarding and moving entertainment I’ve experienced. Your Colorado Symphony is truly at the top of their game and continue to surpass their already phenomenally talented skills with each following concert. I’ve been privileged to receive letters, emails, and personal comments from many of you regarding the supreme talent and emotionally profound performances the orchestra has executed week after week.

It’s hard to believe that another season is already prepared to present to our ever growing audiences. For subscribers, you’ve received a sneak peek of the season, but for those of you receiving this information for the first time, you’ll be excited to learn more about the dynamic repertoire that makes up the best of entertainment in Colorado for the next year. Created in collaboration with the orchestra’s musicians, the 2016/17 season will continue to provide inspiration to all of Colorado.

The season starts with the bold and exciting Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2, takes you through a bevy of world-renowned composer tributes and premieres, and closes with Mahler’s powerhouse Symphony No. 3. Featured in between are some of the country’s crème de-la crème in both talent and technique for vocalists, comedians, and of course, musicians.

All of the Masterworks programs are equally exciting, showcasing the talents of both renowned and up-and coming conductors, composers, and soloists. I’m extremely proud of the profoundly talented Colorado Symphony principal players who will take their turn in the solo spotlight all season long.

Cinema makes a triumphant return this year with two American film cult-classics performed with full accompaniment by the orchestra; Movies at the Symphony: Raiders of the Lost Ark this October, and E.T. the Extra Terrestrial in April of 2017. The reprise of the Geek Series marks a historic shift in programming at the Colorado Symphony. For the fourth season, we bring you pop culture’s best symphonic music with all of the family friendly fun and laughter that you’ve come to associate with the Colorado Symphony.

As you explore the depths of next season’s offerings, remember that becoming a subscriber is the most affordable way to experience the power of this great orchestra – and the most important thing you can to do support your Colorado Symphony.

John Denver: A Rocky Mountain High Concert Celebration SPECIAL

The musical legend John Denver is honored in a special concert celebration with your Colorado Symphony this fall. See and hear two-time Grammy Award®-winning singer/songwriter John Denver on video performing in a concert spectacular featuring archival video footage of Denver performing classic songs backed by live performances from former members of his band with full symphony orchestra. This concert is an innovative musical treat and unforgettable tribute. Hear John Denver’s voice, see vintage John Denver video performances, hear stories of John Denver told by old friends. Concerts will include hit songs spanning his career and honor Denver’s memory and music.

El Latir de México FREE COMMUNITY CONCERT

The Consulate General of Mexico in Denver, the Mexican Cultural Center and the Colorado Symphony are thrilled to present El Latir de México, a free community concert at Boettcher Concert Hall that commemorates Mexico’s Independence. Admission is free, but tickets are required. Tickets available in person, and at the Box Office beginning two weeks prior to the event. Opening Weekend: Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 MASTERWORKS

BRAHMS Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 83 STRAUSS Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30

Andrew Litton conducts the inaugural Masterworks concert of the 2016/17 season! These performances mark the triumphant return to Boettcher Concert Hall of pianist Jon Kimura Parker who has been friends with Maestro Litton since their days at the Juilliard School. Litton takes the audience through a pair of big and bold works, starting with Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2. This notable concerto is a perfect match for the skills of Parker, who has played for Queen Elizabeth as well as with a who's who of rockers and jazzers. Next on the program is Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra, perhaps best known for its use of the opening measures in Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Strauss' mighty tone poem takes listeners on a musical journey both poignant and philosophical.

The Second City Guide to the Symphony POPS

Program featuring the premiere of PDQ BACH’s “Concerto for VERY Grand Piano”

The comedy and classical fusion returns this fall with a special presentation featuring The Second City! “The Second City Guide to the Symphony” is a blend of original sketch comedy, new music, and songs by Matthew Reid, and orchestral works by masters of classical music – including Mozart, Mahler, and Glinka. The show is a humorous celebration of the symphony orchestra, taking a satirical but loving look at the players, the repertoire, the composers, the personalities, and even the audience!

An Evening of Bernstein’s Best MASTERWORKS

SEPT 30-OCT 2 FRI-SAT 7:30 ■ SUN 1:00Teddy Abrams, conductor Morgan James, vocals Selections from Bernstein’s musicals such as West Side Story, Candide, and On the Town

With a style that’s at the intersection of opera, music theatre, and jazz, Broadway vocalist Morgan James follows her stunning turn with the Colorado Symphony in Denver on July 4, 2015, with a slate of showstoppers and ballads from the one and only Leonard Bernstein. James hand-picked the songs for these three concerts with guest conductor Teddy Abrams, Music Director of the Louisville Orchestra, and came up with a career-spanning set of numbers from Bernstein’s best-known works — West Side Story and On the Town among them — alongside selections from less celebrated gems like Mass and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The shows promise a deep dive into the varied repertoire of one of the most illustrious American composers and songwriters of all time, paired with James’ soaring voice.

Edwin Outwater conducts your Colorado Symphony through a varied program of works both old and new. Colorado Symphony Concertmaster Yumi Hwang-Williams performs the world premiere of Rising Phoenix by Daniel Kellogg of the University of Colorado at Boulder, one of Colorado’s top contemporary composers. Outwater, the Music Director for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony in metro Toronto, is making his Denver debut leading the season’s biggest ensemble in Janáček’s boisterous Sinfonietta.

PUCCINI La Bohème

Andrew Litton conducts the Symphony in a staging of a beloved Puccini opera, La Bohème, 120 years after its premiere in Turin, Italy. The heartbreaking story of impassioned, young bohemians in a reimagined contemporary Paris – also adapted into the Broadway smash, Rent— La Bohème tells the timeless tale of love found and lost between Rodolfo and Mimi as they enjoy their youth in the lively Latin Quarter. The Colorado Symphony Chorus and the Colorado Children’s Chorale add another layer to the complexity of this classic story. This concert event follows Andrew Litton’s and the Orchestra’s smashing production of Tosca which was presented during the 2014/15 season.

For the follow-up to his 2015 debut with the Colorado Symphony, guest conductor Courtney Lewis leads the Symphony and Grammy Award®-winning Augustin Hadelich, through a program of 20th century works that crosses the Atlantic at the midway point. The two works by American composer Samuel Barber – Adagio for Strings and Symphony No. 1, or Symphony in One Movement – are high points of his early career, and the former is known for its emotive effect on audiences. We also hop the pond for a pair of works with British origins: Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto and Edward Elgar’s In the South.

The powerhouse piece offers Ainomäe a perfect platform for big and brash virtuosic strokes. The concerts conclude with Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, the five-movement piece known as the Hungarian composer’s most accessible – and most popular work. The shimmering, delicate opening contrasts with the fiery finale, making for a truly awe-inspiring performance.

This season’s annual weekend of all-Beethoven programs highlights works of the world’s most revered and recognized composer: Ludwig van Beethoven. For the 2016 installment, it’s the Coriolan Overture followed by Piano Concerto No. 3 and Symphony No. 7. The opener tackles the 1807 composition that opened Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s tragedy Coriolan. Shakespeare also mined this fertile story of a Roman rebel. Piano Concerto No. 3 showcases soloist Stephen Hough, the world-renowned British pianist, conducted by David Danzmayr. Symphony No. 7 is a fitting finale for the evening.

The Colorado Symphony continues the time-honored tradition hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert & Humanitarian Awards at Boettcher Concert Hall. Renowned conductor Mark Wigglesworth takes the Colorado Symphony on a music history journey that veers around Europe with three first efforts from emerging masters. The program commences with Mozart’s Symphony No. 1 – which Wolfgang Amadeus wrote when he was all of eight years old. Franz Schubert’s first symphony was written when he was 16, and is marked by soaring trumpets and a pronounced maturity. In contrast, Johannes Brahms said he spent 21 years writing his Symphony No. 1, which he finished in 1876 when he was 43. Hear all three masterpieces in this concert weekend dedicated to “the firsts.”

You asked, we’re here to deliver. After a wildly successful opening weekend of the 14/15 season, you asked for it again; Beethoven’s most recognized and beloved work. This program features a star-studded cast of vocalists and the Colorado Symphony Chorus.

Rachmaninoff Performed by Olga Kern MASTERWORKS

RACHMANINOFF Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor, Op. 1 SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 7 in C major, Op. 60, “Leningrad”

Colorado Symphony Artistic Advisor Andrew Litton conducts piano sensation Olga Kern, known as a master of Rachmaninoff. For her 2017 return to Denver, she takes on Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1, with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 concluding the all-Russian program. The imposing piece is one of the composer’s best-known works, a 75-minute orchestral commentary on the German siege of Leningrad in World War II. After the invasion theme of the first movement, the score moves into a requiem dirge, followed by an even more sorrowful phase — “After the requiem comes an even more tragic episode,” Shostakovich explained. “I do not know how to characterize that music…” — and a thunderous finale that’s almost indescribable. It’s a powerful program sure to shake off your winter doldrums!

Byron Stripling What a Wonderful World: POPS

Byron Stripling’s electrifying and heartfelt tribute to Louis Armstrong has become America’s most popular orchestral Pops program. With his engaging rapport, smooth vocals and virtuosic trumpet technique, Byron dazzles audiences across the globe. Musical hits from the Armstrong songbook include, “What A Wonderful World,” “Mack the Knife,” “Ain’t Misbehavin,” “Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans,” “Hello Dolly,” and “Basin Street Blues.” With his signature version of “When The Saints Go Marchin’ In” to close the show, Byron celebrates the spirit of the great Louis Armstrong and leaves ’em dancing in the aisles!


Peter and the Wolf FAMILY

Family-favorite Peter and the Wolf is Prokofiev’s fantastical tale in which Peter and a myriad of unruly animals are brought to life by the instruments of the orchestra to tell a tale in which good triumphs over evil. The Prokofiev classic is an exciting musical experience with live narration and surprises of all sorts! This performance is a great way for your child, and for the child at heart to have a great introduction to the orchestra.


deRidder Conducts MASTERWORKS

NICO MUHLY Viola Concerto ✢ Complete program to be announced

For these midwinter concerts, Andre de Ridder returns to Denver to show locals why he’s considered one of the most creative conductors in the world. The program begins with viola soloist Nadia Sirota taking on American Nico Muhly’s Viola Concerto, premiered in 2015 by Ms. Sirota and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press liked what he heard, writing, “The music is spare, tactile and a little spacey, and seems to briefly open a window on the infinite. . . By the end, you feel as if you’ve been on a journey, happy to have been along for the ride.”

Join Christopher Dragon in his second season as Associate Conductor for the Colorado Symphony as he teams with pianist and former Colorado Symphony Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, who filled the post from 2005 to 2010. For his return to Denver, Kahane tackles the singular piano concerto of Robert Schumann. Leading off the program, the Brahms opener, Nänie — that’s German for funeral song — is a meditation on mortality. After the dramatic start, Schumann’s energetic and eclectic Piano Concerto provides some lightness, and the melodic masterwork that is Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 follows.

Time For Three POPS

Time for Three is a group that happily and infectiously defies any traditional genre classification. With an uncommon mix of virtuosity and showmanship, the American trio performs music from Bach to Brahms and beyond, giving world premieres by Pulitzer Prize winners William Bolcom and Jennifer Higdon. TCHAIKOVSKY Marche Slave, Op. 31 PROKOFIEV Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63 TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36

Dubbed “formidable,” “technically assured,” and “emotional,” Brazilian-born Marcelo Lehninger makes his debut as guest conductor of the Colorado Symphony with violin soloist Vadim Gluzman. Lehninger brings his diverse repertoire to the slate with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to begin and end the concert with Marche Slave and Symphony No. 4. In between is Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2, featuring Israeli-born Gluzman. The piece opens with hints of Russian folk music, but swiftly transitions with Spanish flair and influences in the castanet-laden third movement. Marche Slave is a tone poem that was originally written to benefit injured Serbian veterans after the Serbo-Turkish War of 1876-78. The grand finale, Symphony No. 4, among Tchaikovsky’s most popular works, is a meticulously structured meditation on fate in four movements.

Principal Clarinetist Jason Shafer makes his debut as soloist performing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Concerto. This work provides a showcase for the talents of Shafer, who joined the Symphony at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. One of Mozart’s last works, it highlights the interplay between the orchestra and the clarinet soloist. The program concludes with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s inimitable Scheherazade. The 1888 work is a musical adaptation of A Thousand and One Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights), and the Middle Eastern influence is clear as it interprets the tales of Sinbad, the prince and princess, and a Baghdad festival.

Join us for a wonderfully eclectic and offbeat program built around HK Gruber’s indescribable 1978 work, Frankenstein!!, which includes musicians inflating and popping paper bags as Gabriel Preisser narrates and sings! Gruber pulls out all of the stops, and Preisser’s baritone — which anchored the Symphony’s 2015/16 production of The Music Man — likewise underpins this contemporary work laced with dark humor and unpredictability. On the Beautiful Blue Danube provides a contrasting lead-in to Frankenstein!! with Johann Strauss, Jr.’s instantly recognizable waltz. The evening ends with the lush Brahms Piano Quartet, orchestrated by Arnold Schoenberg.

J.S. BACH St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244

Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, first performed on Good Friday 1727, is widely considered one of the crowning artistic achievements of Western Civilization. Bach’s masterful musical interpretation of the Last Supper and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, puts chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew to music and spans 131 minutes. The Symphony’s production is unusual in that it is a full staging of the work with the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Featured tenor Nicholas Phan takes on the part of the Evangelist and baritone Hadleigh Adams performs the role of Jesus.

DeYoung's credentials are impeccable: the 2003 recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 3 with Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony won Michelle a Grammy Award® for Best Classical Album. This one is sure to be the biggest (and best) performance you will see all spring!

What are the benefits of the FlexPass?■ Save. Great savings over single ticket prices. You pay only

$228 plus a one-time $20 processing fee. That’s a savings of up to 45% off of single ticket prices. Plus we waive the single ticket service fees when you redeem your vouchers.

■ Share. Vouchers can be shared with family and friends.■ Convenience. Use your pass all at once, or concert by concert.

How does it work?■ For $228 you receive six (6) Flex Pass vouchers. Each voucher

Women of Note

Women of Note is a membership group of goodwill ambassadors for the Colorado Symphony, encouraging individuals and organizations to attend concerts and provide financial support to the region’s premier performing arts organization. More than 95% of the funds raised through membership fees provide direct salary support to one distinguished female Colorado Symphony musician each year!

5,000 + Hear the music free because of our Community Ticketing InitiativeThrough partnerships with local agencies and community organizations, the Community Ticketing Initiative (CTI) primarily serves low-income individuals and families for whom cost is a barrier to concert attendance. The CTI brought more than 5,000 individuals to Colorado Symphony performances during the 2015/16 season.
