Dan Bobbett, Mayor

Chairperson’s MessageEach season brings with it so many things to celebrate! At the Town of Paradise, summer means Canada Day Celebrations, beautiful parks and trails, and the highly anticipated SunSplash Paddle in Paradise Festival –to name a few! Marking 20 years of success, this year’s SunSplash Paddle in Paradise Festival will surely be one for the books! Our Recreation and Leisure Committee has been hard at work, ensuring every last detail is accounted for. This summer we will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel with a special Memorial Day Ceremony. I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to our committee members, volunteers, staff, and sponsors for their support in helping to make our programs and events the success that they are each year. With so much planned and so much to do, I look forward to celebrating the season with you!

Cadets905 Viking Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron continues its training, for its 16th year of operation. The squadron is based in Paradise and services the surrounding areas. The program is open to youth between the ages of 12 to 18 years with

meetings every Wednesday night at Rotary Paradise Youth and Community Centre on McNamara Drive from 6:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. The squadron also organizes optional activities that take place on the weekend. Training follows the school year, beginning in September and ending in June.

905 Viking Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron participates in a variety of fun and challenging activities, offering something for everyone! The outdoor enthusiast will appreciate learning survival skills, the athlete will enjoy physical education and recreation, through a variety of sporting activities like biathlon and marksmanship, and those interested in music will find their niche in the music program.

Every cadet will have the chance to participate in flight activities, and some top senior cadets may even earn a scholarship to obtain a private pilot’s license. Whether earning a Transport Canada glider pilot or private pilot license, these cadets wear their wings with a pride rarely found in today’s youth. How would you like to have a license to fly a glider before you can drive a car?

Some cadets are given the opportunity to continue their training over the summer, in another province. They will earn a weekly allowance and create friendships during two, three and six week camps, specializing in certain areas of the cadet program.

Cadets are encouraged to become active, responsible members of their communities. They learn valuable life and work skills like teamwork, leadership, and citizenship. They also reap the personal benefits of increased self-confidence and physical fitness, learning how to take initiative, and how to make decisions. Cadets make valuable contributions to society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities.

Specially-trained Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve officers and civilians provide supervision and instruction.

Membership is open to all with no cost for training, summer camp travel or uniforms. Please contact the Commanding Officer Samantha Parrell for more information at [email protected].
