It is with great pleasure, and with great pride, that I present my first full season as Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Our year begins early, with Speed of Light, an explosive programme of contemporary classics, never before seen in New Zealand. It is a thrill to bring these three great works—Alexander Ekman’s Cacti, William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated and Andonis Foniadakis’ Selon désir—to the RNZB and to audiences in Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin. I am especially pleased to present this exciting programme in partnership with the New Zealand Festival and the Auckland Arts Festival. Our winter programme is a special one for me, as we present the world premiere of my ballet The Wizard of Oz. With all the familiar characters and the story which I have loved since I was a child, I hope that this new work, perfected for the RNZB, will bring audiences of all ages together in a celebration of love and friendship.Giselle is, for me, the perfect Romantic ballet and one which truly allows the RNZB’s dancers to shine. its premiere in 2012 Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg’s production has become a signature work for the company and I am delighted that New Zealand audiences will once again have the opportunity to see this beautiful ballet. Our performing year concludes with a return to top venues in Asia, with Liam Scarlett’s special production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream—loved by audiences around New Zealand in 2015. With such a full year, taking the RNZB to ten centres around New Zealand and at least four education or community events presented for every performance, grateful thanks are due to our partners and supporters whose investment underpins everything we do. I would particularly like to acknowledge the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Te Manatū Taonga, Pub Charity, the Lion Foundation, Ryman Healthcare, Foundation North and Vodafone, together with our many other sponsors, funders and personal

supporters including the Friends of the RNZB and the Dress Circle. Thank you all for your contribution to your national ballet company.I truly believe that artists come into the world to protect and spread beauty, to safeguard history and memories, and to show us all the very best of what human beings can achieve. I hope that this new season will bring you all this, and more; I look forward to seeing you at the ballet in 2016.

Music for the first part of Cacti: collectively assembled, improvised and composed by Tinta Schmidt von Altenstadt, David Marks, Saskia Viersen, Artur Trajko and Jan Pieter Koch, musical coordinator. Text written and spoken by Spenser Theberge.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet presents Speed of Light, the New Zealand premieres of three larger-than-life contemporary classics that will showcase the energy, precision and charisma of New Zealand’s national ballet company, under the artistic leadership of Francesco Ventriglia.

Andonis Foniadakis’s Selon désir, a work inspired by the monumental opening choruses of the St Matthew and St John Passions, was created for Geneva Ballet in 2004. A gorgeous synthesis of colour, light, music and movement, the RNZB is excited to share this special work by one of Europe’s most dynamic choreographers with New Zealand audiences.

Described by The Guardian as ‘the work that changed ballet for ever’, these will be the first New Zealand

performances of William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated. Commissioned by Rudolf Nureyev for the Paris Opéra Ballet in 1987, for a virtuoso cast of young stars, it is a profound honour, and a great thrill, for the RNZB to perform this work.

Alexander Ekman’s Cacti has taken the dance world by storm since its premiere in The Hague in 2010. Combining daredevil virtuosity and split second timing with a playful wit, Cacti, in which the dancers of the RNZB will be joined onstage by the New Zealand String Quartet, is a celebration of physicality and the sheer joy of dance.

Speed of Light will feature in the New Zealand Festival (Wellington) and Auckland Arts Festival in February/ March 2016.

The Wizard of Oz was created by RNZB Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia in Florence in 2010. Through an accident of fate, this charming two act ballet based on L. Frank Baum’s much-loved story of love, friendship, and growing up, was never performed.

Six years on, the world premiere of The Wizard of Oz is set to tour throughout New Zealand, with all the familiar characters brought to life in a beautiful design by Gianluca Falaschi. Music by Francis Poulenc sets the

scene for a colourful staging that is sure to enchant audiences of all ages.

Join Dorothy on her journey to the Emerald City, and the friends and foes she encounters along the way, as she learns that quick wits, compassion and courage—and just a touch of magic—are inside us all.

Former RNZB Artistic Director Ethan Stiefel’s classic production of Giselle first toured New Zealand in 2012, to critical acclaim and sell-out audiences. Subsequently performed by the RNZB in China, the USA, the UK and Italy, and turned into a feature film by New Zealand director Toa Fraser, this is a welcome opportunity for New Zealand audiences to again see this hauntingly beautiful ballet.

In a remote village, the beautiful and innocent Giselle is courted and captivated by a mysterious stranger. When he is revealed as Count Albrecht, betrothed to another, Giselle, broken hearted, descends into madness and death.

In the forest, the Wilis, vengeful ghosts of jilted brides, meet to greet their recently arrived sister: Giselle, who rises from her grave to join their ranks. Albrecht arrives to mourn, and the Wilis exact their revenge, compelling him to dance until he dies from exhaustion. Giselle shields him from their fury, until the first light of day brings the promise of forgiveness and redemption.

Romantic, mystical and lyrical, Giselle is a timeless production of one of classical ballet’s great stories.

Following sell out performances around New Zealand in 2015, the RNZB has been invited to take Liam Scarlett’s acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to venues in Asia in 2016. In recent years the RNZB has taken the best of New Zealand to venues in the UK, France, China, Italy and the USA. 2016 will be another opportunity for audiences outside our shores to experience the RNZB, in a production which enchanted New Zealand audiences in 2015.

THE RNZB WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR SUPPORTING CAST:

our loyal season subscribers, our special family of Friends, Dress Circle members, and Partner a Dancer supporters, and the incredible team of corporate sponsors,

trusts, and funding bodies who work with us.

“I think of it like dancing a great pas de deux, when your partner lifts you into the air and you get to do something incredible. Except that when our audiences and supporters lift us, we get to lift them back every time we perform, and hopefully they feel like they’re achieving something incredible too.” — Mayu Tanigaito, RNZB company dancer

“Meeting supporters of the company has made New Zealand my second home. Now I know I’m performing for people who care, people that I want to make proud. Audiences and artists need to belong to each other.” — Shane Urton, RNZB company dancer

“Kiwis can’t fly? It doesn’t feel that way onstage. And it doesn’t feel that way when I meet people who love the RNZB. Not only can we fly high, but we owe it to them to do so.” — Abigail Boyle, RNZB company dancer
