Liberty Softball Stadium Named No. 2 College Softball Stadium Through a fan vote conducted by FloSoftball.com, Liberty Softball Stadium was voted the second best college softball stadium in the nation. LSU’s Tiger Park, where Liberty played last weekend, was voted voted No. 1, followed by Liberty Softball Stadium and Alabama’s Rhoads Stadium, in that order.
Stadium Dedication Liberty officially dedicated its new facility prior to the Lady Flames’ doubleheader against Presbyterian on April 3, 2015. A pregame ceremony took place, as former Liberty head coach Paul Wetmore provided the invocation. Liberty President Jerry Falwell, along with current head coach Dot Richardson, threw out the ceremonial first pitches. Becki Falwell and Liberty Director of Athletics Jeff Barber were also a part of the ceremony. The highlight of the pre-game ceremony was the announcement of naming rights of the field, which will now be called Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium. Dwayne Kamphuis, a financial supporter of Liberty University and the softball pro-gram, is a legendary fast pitch softball pitcher. Kamphuis traveled the world playing in exhibition softball games as part of the renowned “King and His Court” team, headed up by Eddie “The King” Feigner.
Opening Games Liberty posted a 3-2 record at the Liberty Softball Classic, March 19-21, 2015. The Lady Flames opened their new Liberty Softball Stadium with a 9-2 win over Rider on March 19, and picked up wins over Princeton and Quinnipiac as well.
Firsts for All During the first game in Liberty Softball Stadium history, March 19 against Rider, Megan Robinson recorded the first hit, Madison Kotchey the first double and RBI, Mickey Loveridge the first triple, Tori Zavodny the first stolen base and home run and Chandler Ball the first pitch, strikeout and first victory. One feat that has not been obtained during the history of Liberty Softball Stadium is a grand slam.
Extra, Extra Liberty downed Coastal Carolina, 5-4 in 10 innings on April 18, 2015 the first extra-inning game in Liberty Softball Stadium history. At three and a half hours, it was also the longest game in stadium history. The Lady Flames are 2-0 in extra-inning contests at Liberty Softball Stadium
Lights, Camera, Action The new stadium is equipped with the latest technology, making it ready for televi-sion broadcasts. A majority of Liberty’s home games are scheduled to air either as full TV broadcasts and/or as live video webstreams. Lady Flames Take 2 of 3 at Coastal Liberty improved its conference record to a Big South-leading 5-1 by going 2-1 at Coastal Carolina last weekend. The Lady Flames got home runs from Sarah Robertson and Alexia Taylor in a 6-4 win in game one Friday. Also, Julia DiMartino earned the win and Chandler Ball picked up her conference-best third save of the season. Liberty then edged out the Chanticleers, 2-0, during the second game, behind a four-hit shutout by Chandler Ball. Ball is the first Big South pitcher to shut Coastal out in a Big South regular-season game since March 28, 2012, a span of 91 games. The Chanticleers won game three, 9-1, ending Liberty’s six-game winning streak and five-game Big South winning streak. The last time the Lady Flames won six or more games in a row was an eight-game winning streak, April 13-20, 2011.
Recent Trends Liberty has won six out of its last seven games, and is 8-3 in is last 11 contests. During the last 11 games, Liberty has outhit opponents, .332 to .216, while posting a 2.08 team ERA and three shutouts.
Blankings Chandler Ball tossed her first shutout of the season, and sixth for her career, Friday at Coastal Carolina. Julia DiMartino has thrown two shutouts this season including a no-hitter against Stetson, while classmate Chase Cassady pitched a two-hit shutout versus La Salle, March 12. This is the second year in a row that three different Lady Flames have tossed at least one shutout. Ball had four shutouts, Kenzie Friesen, two and Abby Tincher tossed one shutout in 2015. The Lady Flames have fashioned a Big South-leading six shutouts this season, just one away from last year’s full-season total of seven blankings.
Triple the Fun Tori Zavodny is tied for third in the nation with five triples this season, and is ranked fifth in program history with eight career triples. Zavodny leads the Lady Flames with 16 stolen bases this season, and is tied for sixth all-time in program history with 40 career steals.
Three for Me Jaclyn Amader went 3-for-4 on Friday against Coastal Carolina, good for her team-leading fourth three-hit game this season. So far this season, Liberty has gotten three-hit games from seven different players, in Jaclyn Amader (4), Alexia Taylor (2), Mickey Lov-eridge (2), Kassidy McCoy, Katie Han, Rylee Reynolds and Tori Zavodny.
K Zone Liberty leads the Big South with 6.37 strikeouts per seven innings.
Julia DiMartino struck out a career-high 13 Sacred Heart batters on March 12, the most strikeouts by a Lady Flame since April 17, 2010 (14 by Tiffani Smith vs. Gardner-Webb). Chase Cassady then fanned a career-best 11 batters in a 9-0, two-hit shutout over La Salle, on March 12.
What a Relief Chandler Ball, serving largely in a relief role after winning 20 games last year, posted a streak of 16 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run, starting March 11 against Rhode Island and ending at Coastal Carolina on Saturday. Last March, Ball posted a stretch of 20 straight innings with no earned runs allowed. With 43 career wins, Ball is tied with Terra Lowe (2004-07) for sixth in program history. Sarah Ellis (2006-09) is fifth with 44 victories.
Double-DoubleJaclyn Amader is ranked third in the Big South with nine doubles this season.
Additionally, she is one of five Lady Flames to hit two or more homers this year, joined by Madison Kotchey, Kassidy McCoy, Sarah Robertson and Tori Zavodny. Robertson hit her team-leading third homer of the season, Friday at Coastal Carolina.
Youth Abounds Liberty started five freshmen during its season opener at UCF. Liberty’s freshman opening-day starters included: Chase Cassady (P), Rylee Reyn-olds (2B), Sarah Robertson (SS), Jaclyn Amader (CF) and Kaitlin McFarland (DP). Nine freshmen and five sophomores have made at least one start this season. During its last game, Saturday at Coastal Carolina, four freshmen and four sophomores started.
Big South Honorees Three Lady Flames have earned weekly honors from the Big South this sesaon. Madi-son Kotchey (March 21) and Alexia Taylor (Feb. 15) have been named Big South Player of the Week once each, while Chase Cassady was named Pitcher of the Week, March 14.
Big Comebacks Liberty trailed Lamar, 4-1, with one out in the bottom of the seventh, before rallying to tie the game, 4-4. The Lady Flames then won the game, 6-5, in the 10th inning with a walk-off squeeze bunt, as Kassidy McCoy drove in Sarah Robertson from third. Then, facing a 6-4 deficit to Louisiana Tech with two outs in the seventh on March 4, McCoy hit a game-tying home run. Then, Robertson’s two-run blast in the eighth sparked Liberty’s five-run spurt to an 11-6 win.
Three’s a Crowd Liberty totaled a season-high 16 hits against Louisiana Tech, March 4, the team’s most hits since a 16-hit game in a 10-3 win over Winthrop, April 18, 2014. Also, Kassidy McCoy (4-for-4), Mickey Loveridge (3-for-4) and Alexia Taylor (3-for-6) had three or more hits each against Louisiana Tech. (DiMarti)No-No Freshman Julia DiMartino tossed the 15th no-hitter in the program’s NCAA Division I history, during an 8-0 win over Stetson on Feb. 13. DiMartino and catcher Alexia Taylor are the first Liberty battery to complete a no-hitter since Tiffani Smith tossed a no-hitter to Keely McMillon at Winthrop, May 13, 2011. DiMar-tino is just the second Liberty freshman to pitch a no-hitter, joining Leslie Inge (1997).
Home Run Notables Madison Kotchey is the lone Lady Flame to hit a collegiate grand slam. Kotchey’s grand slam narrowed the Lady Flames’ deficit to 7-4 during an elimination game against Coastal Carolina in the 2015 Big South Softball Championship. Kassidy McCoy hit a career-high two homers at Charleston Southern on April 12, 2015, making her the only current Lady Flame to hit two homers in a game.
Welcome Freshmen This year, the Lady Flames have 12 freshmen on their softball roster. It marks the larg-est freshman class in program history. Prior to this season, the largest freshman class was in 1996, when 11 freshmen appeared on the roster. Stacy Radulovich, a three-time Big South All-Conference first team selection, was named 1996 Big South Rookie of the Year, while 1996 freshmen Katie Phillips and Libi Cook both earned two all-conference awards.
Family Matters Freshman pitcher Chase Cassady, a two-time all-state pitcher from Orlando, Fla., is the younger sister of current Liberty assistant coach Paige Cassady. Their father, John Cassady, is on staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Freshman pitcher Julia DiMartino was the 2014 Gatorade New York State Player of the Year. Her older sister, Alyssa DiMartino, pitched for the Lady Flames from 2011-14, serving as Liberty’s opening-game starter in both 2012 and 2014. Sophomore outfielder Tori Zavodny, a 2015 VaSID All-State second team selection, is the younger sister of Katie Zavodny, who was a 2013 NFCA All-Region outfielder and holds Liberty’s records for career and single-season stolen bases. Sophomore Madi Clarke’s father, David Clarke, played baseball at Liberty from 1986-1989. In fact, David Clarke played his home games at Worthington Stadium, the same site where Liberty Softball Stadium now sits.
