Ithaca vs. Hobart Game Notes:All-Time Series: The Bombers lead the all-time series against Hobart College, 25-4, dating back to 1961. IC defeated Hobart in that first meeting, 19-6. The teams would not meet again for 11 years (1972), where the Bombers came away with a 17-7 victory. Ithaca won the first 10 matchups in the rivalry before Hobart snapped the streak with a 23-20 win in 1983. Ithaca would then win the next 12 games from 1984-1999. The last six meetings since 1999 have been split, 3-3. Last Season’s Matchup: Ithaca prevailed in last season’s showdown at But-terfield Stadium, 24-6, in a top 25 battle – the Bombers were ranked 24th, while Hobart was 16th.
The Bombers held Hobart to just 159 yards of offense in the game and forced six turnovers, including a fumble recovery in the end zone for the first score of the contest.
Bombers Under the Lights: Ithaca has played nine games all-time under the lights since 1968. The Bombers are 6-3 in those contests, and the last time they played a game at 7 p.m. was against St. John Fisher in 2002 (W, 30-20). Ithaca’s only losses in night games were against Montclair State (29-0) in 1993, Division II West Chester University (41-0) in 1969 and the University of Bridgeport (33-6) in 1969. Bridgeport no longer sponsors a football program.
IC Wins 19th Straight Season Opener: Ithaca is coming off a bye week, but won its season-opener over Union College, 14-9, on Sept. 3 – its 19th consecutive season-opening victory.
The Bombers never trailed in the showdown and clinched the win with a 54-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Jordan Schemm on the first play of the fourth quarter. Ithaca’s first score of the game came on a 6-yard pass from Wolfgang Shafter to Myles LaFrance with 4:54 left in the opening quarter. It was LaFrance’s first career touchdown.
Minogue’s Huge Fourth Quarter: Pat Minogue came up clutch against Union when it mattered the most – in the fourth quarter. Over the final 15 minutes of play, Minogue forced a fumble, which was returned by Schemm, made back-to-back tackles for loss with the Dutchmen inside the Bombers’ 10-yard line – that led to a missed field goal – and intercepted a pass on Union’s final drive of the game in seal the victory.
For his efforts, Minogue was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week and was recognized as Empire 8 Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Scouting the Statesmen: Hobart enters Saturday with a national ranking of 25 after a pair of victories to start the season. The Statesmen defeated Brockport, 41-35, in their opening and then followed with a 42-20 win at Endicott. Hobart averages nearly 500 yards per game, and allows 347.5 per contest.
Devastating Passing Attack: The Statesmen rank 11th nationally in passing offense, averaging 392 yards per game. Shane Sweeney has accounted for all the passing yards with 420 against Brockport and 364 at Endicott. He has also tossed eight touchdowns.

Up Next: The Bombers travel to Alfred on September 24 for a 1 p.m. contest in Al-fred. Next Saturday’s matchup is the Empire 8 Conference opener for the Bombers. Ithaca’s next home game is slated for October 1 against Utica at 1 p.m.
