Box 1472 Athens, Ga. 30603 Coach & Player Interviews Throughout the season, the Bulldogs will practice from ap-proximately 2:00-4:30 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. All practices are open to the media unless otherwise specified. Interviews will generally be conducted before practice. However, other arrangements can be made by contacting UGA Sports Communications. Media desiring to conduct interviews over the phone should make arrangements through the Sports Commu-nications office as well. These will be conducted according to Coach Diaz and the players’ availability, usually prior to, or just after, practice sessions. Photography/Video Only recognized photographers and videographers have per-mission to shoot on the courts. All photographers wishing to shoot at practice or at matches must check in with UGA Sports Commu-nications before doing so. To shoot practice, please contact UGA Sports Communications. On match days, photographers may call, email or check in directly with the press box prior to or during the match. Photographers and videographers will be allowed to shoot from court level, provided that they follow specific rules set forth by the UGA Sports Communications and UGA Event Management staff.

Gameday Media Services All recognized media personnel and photographers are invited to work in the press box located atop the grandstands. Credentials are not required for regular season matches. The press box is equipped with wireless and hard-wired internet con-nections, which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Final box scores, media guides, updated game notes and sta-tistics for both Georgia and its visiting opponents will be available in the press box. Following each match, a recap will be emailed to the media and posted on www.georgiadogs.com, the official website of Georgia athletics. The website will also include a box score and updated statistics. If you would like to be included on the email list, please contact UGA Sports Communications. Postmatch Interviews Media in the press box area will be surveyed at the conclu-sion of the match to determine which players are needed for interviews. All interviews will be conducted on the courts and will be arranged by UGA Sports Communications.

Live Video All six stadium courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex fea-ture video cameras that stream live action to the internet during every outdoor home event. The video streams can be accessed through georgiadogs.com.

Directions From Atlanta:Take I-85 North to Highway 316 (signs to Athens). Continue on 316 approximately 40 miles. Turn right on the Athens Bypass (Loop 10) southbound. Take the Milledge Avenue exit and turn left at the bottom of the ramp. Follow Milledge until you reach Five Points, a five-way intersection. Take a right onto Lumpkin Street. After one traffic light, take a right onto Pinecrest. At the first stop sign, turn left onto Rutherford. The complex is two blocks ahead on the right, next to Foley Field.

From Points North:From I-85 South, exit onto State Route 106 at Exit 166. Follow this road to Athens (no turns), where the road becomes North Ave. When you reach downtown Athens, North Ave. becomes Thomas Street and then East Campus Road. Follow East Campus Road for several miles and then turn right onto Carlton Street. Turn left onto Smith Street. Follow behind the Coliseum, then turn left onto Rutherford. The complex is two blocks ahead on the left, next to Foley Field.

Q&A WITH COACH MANUEL DIAZ

What were some of your takeaways from the fall season?The thing that stands out to me is we have tremendous depth this year, which is something that we may really benefit from with the schedule that we play and the length of the season. We have the ability to make sure players are rested and healthy and are peak-ing at the right time. We’ll be able to keep an eye on our guys and not have to gamble with someone who is less than 100 percent. We feel like our freshmen had a tremendous fall and they are capable of contributing in a big way in both singles and doubles. We’ve also seen tremendous progress from young players like Paul Oosterbaan and Wayne Montgomery, who held steady as one of our top players. We have tremendous confidence that we can compete with anyone this year.

What was the most surprising aspect of the fall?Paul showed glimpses of the great player that we know he is becoming. Unfortunately, his fall was curtailed by some small injuries, so he may not have necessarily achieved the results that I know has worked for and has acquired as a player right now. I would’ve really loved to see him play in the regionals and the All-American tournament and even the Bulldog Scramble. I think he is going to be a force for us.

How important will it be to have such a strong senior class?Our seniors – Austin Smith, Ben Wagland and Nick Wood – are doing a tremendous job of growing as players and as people. They’ve been put in position to lead and they are taking it seri-ously. They are trying to grow everyday. It’s great to see Austin and Ben really kind of come into their own in the consolation at National Indoors. They won the Southern Intercollegiates, but they didn’t do as well as expected at the All-American Champion-ships and the regional. They really played their best tournament of the fall at National Indoors, and we are hoping that will get them back on track.

What are the expectations for Wayne Montgomery this year?Wayne had a tremendous Oracle tournament where he lost to one of the best players in the country. He didn’t play as well in Tulsa or in the regional. He was hampered a little bit by injuries. Both Wayne and Austin are the lead dogs here. They carried that last year with great success, and I think they can every bit as good and probably better this year.

How much do you think Jan Zielinksi will contribute?Jan is really committed and hard-working. He’s had tremendous success in both singles and doubles, so we feel like he is really going to make a huge difference in our doubles, and we want to give him an opportunity to compete for a spot in singles as well. We don’t know exactly where he is going to fit, but he is a hungry, hard-working, athletic player who will be a very good player for Georgia. How quickly can he make his imprint in both singles and doubles? We’re not sure where he’s going to fall in singles, but he’s going to be an asset for us.

What are the team’s goals this season?As always our goal this year is to go after a conference champi-onship. We have a tremendous opportunity with a terrific non-conference schedule, facing USC and UCLA once again as well as Ohio State. All of these teams will be competing for a national championship, and I think you can include the Georgia Bulldogs in that. We are a hungry group, and we are a team that is com-ing together in the locker room. Our players are recognizing the importance of playing an important role in that regard.

Highlights of Georgia’s Fall Season

Singles**Walker Duncan led the team with 14 wins, followed by Austin Smith with 10. Smith had a team-best three wins against ranked op-ponents. Paul Oosterbaan won seven of his nine matches.

**For the second straight year, Wayne Montgomery won the South-ern Intercollegiate title, becoming the tournament’s first repeat outright champion since John Isner in 2005 and 2006.

**Montgomery and Smith each won a match at the inaugural Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif. Montgomery’s win was against No. 1-ranked Axel Alvarez of Oklahoma, while Smith beat North Carolina’s No. 14 Ronnie Schneider.

**Oosterbaan advanced to the semifinals of the Cajun Classic in Lafayette, La.

**Duncan won three matches in as many days to earn a spot in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships.

Doubles**No. 1-ranked Austin Smith and Ben Wagland won 12 matches and earned an at-large bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercolle-giate Championships where they won the consolation title.

**Smith and Wagland won the Southern Intercollegiate title, defeating Memphis’ Louis Asser and Kevin Lemke in the final. The following week they reached the consolation final of the Oracle/ITA Masters. The pair later advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fla.

Manuel DiazHead Coach28th Season

Manuel Diaz enters his 28th season as head coach at Georgia, and he is one of only two coaches in program history at the varsity level. In his 27th season, the Bulldog let-terwinner guided the team to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships while winning a

league-leading 38th Southeastern Conference title and third in a row. Fol-lowing the 2014-15 season, Diaz owns a career record of 627-135 (.823). Diaz has led Georgia to six national championships - four NCAA titles (1999, 2001, 2007 and 2008) and two ITA National Indoor titles (2006 and 2007). He is one of only three active coaches with multiple NCAA titles. Since becoming head coach in 1988, Diaz has guided the Bulldogs to 26 SEC titles (17 regular season crowns and nine tournament champi-onships). The Bulldogs have ended the season ranked in the top-five nation-ally 19 times under Diaz and finished in the top-10 24 times and the top-25 in all 27 of his years as head coach. Diaz won the 600th match of his career in April 2014 vs. Alabama, becoming just the 10th NCAA Division-I coach to reach that milestone, and won his second ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year award in three years and seventh overall. The 2015 team won Georgia’s Faculty Athletics Representative Award as the UGA men’s team with the highest grade point average. Georgia’s 994 Academic Progress Rate (APR) score released in May 2015 was also tied for the highest among UGA men’s teams and was third among SEC men’s tennis programs. In 2013, his 25th season at the helm, Diaz led UGA into the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in eight years. He coached his 700th Georgia match Diaz’s Bulldogs swept both the SEC regular season and tournament crowns for the seventh time in school history. On March 10, 2013, Diaz moved into second place on the all-time SEC wins list behind only his mentor Dan Magill. In 2012, Diaz captured his 550th career win in a mid-season dual match vs. Vanderbilt, and was named the ITA Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career. It was his 30th season overall coaching in Athens as he completed six seasons as an assistant. Diaz led the Bulldogs to their second consecutive NCAA Champion-ship in 2008. The sixth NCAA team championship title in school history, Diaz has accounted for four of them as the head coach (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008), and he was also an assistant coach under Magill on both of the other winning squads (1985, ‘87). In addition to his four NCAA Championships, Diaz’s teams have reached the NCAA finals seven other times: 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2006. In the last 10 seasons, Diaz has coached his team to a remarkable 253-43 record that includes an undefeated 32-0 National Championship season in 2007. Georgia was also 30-1 in 2006, with its lone loss coming in the NCAA final. From April 23, 2005 to March 19, 2010, Diaz coached the Dogs to 71 straight wins at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the second-longest home winning streak in program history. Diaz led Georgia to 11 consecutive national top-five finishes from 1989 to ‘99, a feat no other school in the country can match. Diaz’s Bulldogs won the program’s first-ever triple crown of tennis in 2001, as the team won its second national title in three years, while Ma-tias Boeker won the NCAA singles crown and teamed with Travis Parrott for the doubles championship. It was only the third time since 1977 that such a feat had been accomplished. Diaz was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1989, 1995, 2001, 2006 and 2007. Under Diaz, Georgia has seen 34 different players earn 84 All-America honors. With Diaz at the helm, five Bulldogs have been four-year All-Americans: Mike Sell (1992-95), Jamie Laschinger (1993-96), Steven

Baldas (1995-98), Bo Hodge (2001-04) and most recently John Isner (2004-07). Diaz has a proven track record at developing players for their careers in college and beyond. After he was a four-time All-American at UGA, Isner has gone on to achieve a top-10 ATP world ranking, and he is currently the highest-ranked male American tennis player. Diaz was involved in the development of 1984 and 1985 NCAA singles champion Mikael Pernfors, who also went on to reach an ATP top-10 ranking along with being a finalist in the 1986 French Open. Diaz also coached Grand Slam champions Murphy Jensen (French Open doubles) and T.J. Middleton (Wimbledon mixed doubles) in addition to numerous players who were in or around the ATP top-100 in the world. Under Diaz, Georgia has been among the most nationally-televised collegiate programs. Georgia made history in 2007, when its national championship win in Athens at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex became the first collegiate tennis match ever to be televised live. The production was carried on ESPNU. The Bulldogs have had a player in the NCAA singles finals in 1991, 1992, 1993, 2002 and 2007, and appeared in the team final in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2008, all of which have been televised by ESPN. In 2005, Isner and Ruiz’s doubles win was televised by The Tennis Chan-nel. Georgia had a player in the team, singles and doubles finals in 2001, but those matches were not televised. Diaz is a respected and honored leader in collegiate tennis including being selected as the Wilson/ITA National Coach-of-the Year in 1995, 2001 and 2007. He was inducted into the State of Georgia Hall of Fame in the fall of 2000. For his outstanding contribution to tennis in his home country of Puerto Rico, Diaz was inducted into the Puerto Rican Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998. A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Diaz is married to the former Suzanne Rondeau of Toronto, Canada. They have three sons: Manuel III, Eric and Alex.

Bo HodgeAssociate Head CoachFirst Season

Bo Hodge, a former Georgia All-American, enters his first year on the Georgia staff as associate head coach after serving in the same position at Oklahoma. He was officially hired at UGA by his former coach, Manuel Diaz, on June 19, 2015.

Coaching with former Bulldog John Roddick, Hodge helped the Sooners achieve unprecedented success in his four seasons in Norman as OU compiled a 97-18 record - it’s best four-year mark in school history - and reached the NCAA final in both 2014 and 2015. In 2015, Hodge helped guide the Sooners to a program record with 29 wins, the school’s first National Indoor title and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Championship. In Hodge’s four years, an Oklahoma player finished the season ranked in the top-15 nationally in singles five times, including this past season when Axel Alvarez ended the year ranked No. 1 and was also named the ITA National Player of the Year. The 2014 Oklahoma squad claimed a No. 1 national ranking for the first time in program history, and Hodge was voted ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year at the end of the season. In addition to NCAA runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2015, Hodge and the Sooners won Big 12 titles in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. An Athens native, Hodge served as a volunteer coach for the Bulldogs from 2006-2008. During those three seasons, Georgia won three national championships (National Indoors in 2006, NCAA in 2007 and 2008) and back-to-back-to-back SEC championships with an 89-4 record. Hodge was hired to be Oklahoma’s assistant in 2011 and was pro-moted to associate head coach following the 2013 season. He previously spent three years as an assistant coach at Alabama under Billy Pate from 2008-2011. He helped the Crimson Tide earn a pair of berths to the NCAA Championship. Hodge also coaches the USTA Collegiate National Team, which is a high-level training program designed to help top American college players make a smooth transition to professional tennis. Players who have participated in the program include Hodge’s former Georgia team-mate and doubles partner John Isner, James Blake (Harvard), Bob Bryan

(Stanford) and Mike Bryan (Stanford). As a player, Hodge became the sixth four-year All-American in Geor-gia’s storied history. He is also one of seven four-year All-SEC honorees to play under Diaz. Hodge was a member of the 2001 NCAA championship team, and he played on three SEC championship teams (2001, 2002 and 2004). Hodge was ranked as high as No. 2 in the country in both his fresh-man and senior seasons, and he spent much of his college career ranked in the nation’s top five in both singles and doubles. He reached the NCAA doubles final in 2004 with Isner. After completing his eligibility with the Bulldogs in 2004, Hodge played on the ATP Tour for two years before his coaching career began. He was as a coach and hitting partner with Venus and Serena Williams in 2005-06 and also worked with Mardy Fish in 2007 and 2008. Hodge graduated from Georgia in 2008 with a degree in speech com-munications. Before coming to UGA, he led Athens Academy to the 1998 Class A High School state title as a sophomore. He then moved to Boca Raton, Fla., to train under South African coach Stanford Boster while attending Boca Prep, where he also played on the basketball team. Hodge is married to the former Tatum Clowney of Greenville, S.C., and they have a daughter, Harper, born in October 2015. He is the son of Mark and Suzette Hodge of Athens, and his father is a UGA football let-terman and was a tight end and offensive captain of the 1978 Bulldogs.

Nick PapacVolunteer CoachFirst Season

Nick Papac, who was a member of two NCAA runner-up teams as a player at the University of Oklahoma, was officially named volunteer coach for the Georgia men’s tennis team on Aug. 26, 2015.

Papac concluded his senior season for the Sooners in May 2015. He was also a member of the National Indoor Championship team in addition to Big 12 title teams from 2012-15. A native of Norman, Okla., Papac played in 15 dual matches at Fresno State and helped the Bulldogs win the 2011 WAC championship before he transferred to Oklahoma. While at Oklahoma, Papac played under the tutelage of UGA associate head coach Bo Hodge. Papac graduated from Oklahoma in May 2015 with a degree in administrative leadership.

The 1985 Georgia squad, led by seniors in the top four positions, was perhaps the most powerful team in school history. The Bulldogs were led by Mikael Pernfors, a native Swede who won a second straight NCAA singles championship with a victory over team-mate and roommate George Bezecny. Bezecny played No. 2 for the Bulldogs while Allen Miller, a four-time All-American, was No. 3. The rest of the lineup consisted of Deane Frey at No. 4 singles, Philip Johnson at No. 5 and freshman Trey Carter at No. 6. Georgia finished the spring dual match schedule with a perfect 26-0 record.

The 1987 Georgia tennis team completed the SEC hat trick by winning the indoor tournament, the confer-ence round robin with a 9-0 record and the league outdoor championship. The lineup for the 1987 national champions consisted of the following players: Philip Johnson at No. 1 singles, Stephen Enochs at No. 2, John Boytim at No. 3 and Trey Carter at No. 4. Round-ing out the Bulldogs’ lineup was Mike Morrison at No. 5 singles with T.J. Middleton at No. 6. Freshman Jim Childs saw significant action at No. 6 singles and was a regular at No. 3 doubles.

The 1999 Bulldogs entered the newly formatted 64-team tournament as the No. 10 seed. Through the course of the regional and championship tournaments, the Bulldogs overcame seemingly insurmountable odds, fighting off three team match points to rise to the top. In the team final against top-ranked UCLA, Georgia opened with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 to claim the doubles point. The Bruins retaliated, proving that they would not go quietly. Falling into a tie in singles play, junior Joey Pitts swung the balance for the Bulldogs in a three-setter at the No. 4 position.

The 2001 Bulldogs etched their name in the annals of Georgia tennis history and also the NCAA record books as just the second program to win the title, fail to reach the Round of 16 the following year and then claim another NCAA crown in a span of three years. UGA rode a 25-match winning streak through the tourna-ment to capture the program’s fourth national title. In the team final, Georgia clinched the doubles point, but lost the first set in three singles matches. However, with Georgia leading 3-1, Chad Carlson topped Adam Carey 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to clinch the match for UGA.

The 2007 Bulldogs completed their dream season by winning the program’s fifth NCAA title on their home court. The crown was the final piece to a perfect puzzle as the squad captured every possible team title during its undefeated run, which also included the ITA Team Indoor National Championship and the SEC Tourna-ment. Georgia was so dominant as a team that for the first time in team history, the Bulldogs never allowed an opponent more than two points in a match. Even then, UGA’s opposition gained two points only twice, while suffering a total of 22 shutouts.

The 2008 Bulldogs became the first squad to win back-to-back NCAA Championship titles since Stanford in 1998-99. Georgia officially captured the title by defeating Texas in the finals, 4-2. However, arguably the victory most indicative of the Bulldogs’ talent came in the semifinal round as Georgia topped undefeated, No. 1-ranked and heavily-favored Virginia, 4-3. Overshad-owed by the run to the national championship, the Bulldogs also captured their third consecutive regular-season Southeastern Conference championship with a 10-1 record.

From 1953-1989 the SEC Champion was determined by the accumulation of points in an individual flighted tournament (there was not a separate team tournament champion). In 1990, a team dual match format was instituted for the conference tournament which provided a SEC Tournament Champion. From 1990-98, the SEC Champion was determined by a total aggregate points accumulated at the conclusion of the conference tournament: one full point is awarded for each regular-season conference win, one-half point for wins in the first two rounds of the conference tournament, one-half point for re-ceiving a first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in the conference tournament semifinals and finals. For the 1999 sea-son, the same points system was in place with a couple of changes: one full point for first-round bye in the conference tournament and one full point for a win in any round of the conference tournament. In 2000, the SEC changed the determination of its tennis regular season champion to the team with the best winning percentage in conference regular-season dual matches.
