Columbus Crew SC will be looking to turn around the opening
third of their season in a true test, when they face Real Salt Lake
on Saturday evening at Mapfre Stadium. Crew SC are returning home
following a third consecutive draw, after their goalless result at
Toronto FC last weekend. Real are continuing their five-game road
swing, winning for the first time on the trip in a 3-1 defeat of
Sporting Kansas City last Saturday, snapping a two-game losing run.

This is the only league meeting between the teams this season.
The last two meetings between the teams have ended in draws,
including a 2-2 result last June 27 at Rio Tinto
Stadium in the only encounter between the clubs. The teams
reached a 1-1 draw in 2014 in the last matchup in Columbus.
The last win by either team, RSL’s 4-0 win vs. Crew SC on Aug.
24, 2013, was Real’s first win against Columbus since 2010,
snapping a three-game Crew SC winning streak.
RSL have not won in Columbus in league play since 2006, the Crew
having won six consecutive home regular-season games in the series
before the draw there in 2014. Real did win the second leg of the
Eastern Conference Semifinal Series between the teams in 2009 in
Columbus, on their way to an MLS Cup title.
Coaches record: Gregg Berhalter vs. RSL: P2 W0 L0 T2 … Jeff
Cassar vs. CLB: P2 W0 L0 T2 COLUMBUS CREW SC Columbus Crew SC
recorded their third consecutive draw, playing to a goalless result
with Toronto FC on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field. Crew SC are in
ninth place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points from 11 games.
LAST MATCH
Crew SC goalkeeper Steve Clark was credited with two saves in
keeping the clean sheet, including an impressive stop on Sebastian
Giovinco in the 36th minute.
TFC goalkeeper Clint Irwin stopped four shots on his way to the
shutout, but got some help in the 51st minute when an audacious
chip from Justin Meram was denied by the left post before Federico
Higuain's rebound effort was cleared by Toronto defender Josh
Williams.
Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter made no changes to the team
that reached a 1-1 result with the Colorado Rapids at Mapfre
Stadium.
COLUMBUS CREW SC (4-2-3-1): Steve Clark - Harrison Afful,
Michael Parkhurst, Gaston Sauro (Rodrigo Saravia 35), Corey Ashe -
Wil Trapp, Mohammed Saeid - Justin Meram (Hector Jimenez 85),
Federico Higuain, Cedrick Mabwati (Ethan Finlay 67) - Ola
Kamara.
TEAM NEWS Crew SC reached a third consecutive draw, their
winless run now at four games overall since their only two
victories of the season April 16-23. “I thought it was a game of
high intensity, both teams willing to get up and down the field and
put in a good
effort. I think we could have been a little bit cleaner with
some of our offensive movements but overall I was very happy with
the result,” said Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter.
-
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Crew SC also remained winless on the road for the season, the
draw ended a two-game losing slide on their travels.
Crew SC were shut out at the attacking end for a fourth time
this season. They also recorded a defensive shutout for a third
time this year; it was their second goalless draw for the campaign
(also: 0-0 vs. Chicago, March 19).
“Credit [goalkeeper] Steve [Clark], but you also have to credit
the entire team for the defensive pressure and our defensive shape.
Rodrigo Saravia came into the game after 30 minutes, a midfielder
that came in and played center back and the guys really helped him
and he put in a good performance. So credit the entire team for
getting a shutout away from home,” said Berhalter.
Gaston Sauro made a second consecutive start in central defense,
after he was out of the first XI for four consecutive matches April
16-May 7. But Sauro was forced off with a knee injury after just 35
minutes, and will be lost for months.
“It’s not the best news,” Berhalter said to The Columbus
Dispatch. “I think he’ll be back, but we’ll plan on a good four or
five months here. That’s life. Every team goes through something
like this. It’s unfortunate, but it’s our sport.”
Rodrigo Saravia came on as a substitute in place of Sauro,
playing 55 minutes, the longest shift of his MLS career. Saravia
had made four previous appearances, totaling 31 minutes.
“I thought he did a great job. It’s a tough task to come into a
game as a center back and even tougher when you’re playing on the
road against probably the best striker in the league,” Michael
Parkhurst said. “So I thought he did really well; I thought he was
composed, strong in the tackle and a very good performance from
him.”
Berhalter maintained the same starting XI for a second
consecutive match, the third time this season the Crew SC boss has
kept the same first team in back-to-back matches.
REAL SALT LAKE Real Salt Lake snapped their two-game losing skid
on their road swing, defeating Sporting Kansas City 3-1 on Saturday
evening at Children’s Mercy Park. Real are in a tie for third place
in the Western Conference with 20 points from 11 games. LAST
MATCH
RSL took the lead in the 32nd minute. Joao Plata recovered a
loose ball in the SKC end and then he, Javier Morales, and Juan
Manuel Martinez put on a passing clinic that ended with a perfect
ball across the face of goal for Martinez to smash into the
net.
Real were up 2-0 at halftime after a Yura Movsisyan shot took a
deflection off Sporting's Brad Davis for an own goal in stoppage
time,
SKC pulled a goal back back in the 50th minute when Jimmy
Medranda sent a long diagonal ball to Dom Dwyer, who finessed the
ball home through defensive traffic. But just three minutes later
the two-goal margin was restored when Kyle Beckerman started an RSL
counter with a midfield tackle that was finished Movsisyan past SKC
goalkeeper Tim Melia.
RSL head coach Jeff Cassar made three changes to the team that
dropped a 1-0 decision to the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass
Stadium. Nick Rimando came back in between the posts for Jeff
Attinella, Aaron Maund started at center back in place of Jamison
Olave, and Sunday Stephen returned to the midfield for John
Stertzer.
REAL SALT LAKE (4-2-1-3): Nick Rimando - Tony Beltran, Justen
Glad, Aaron Maund, Chris Wingert (Demar Phillips 68) - Sunday
Stephen, Kyle Beckerman - Javier Morales - Juan Manuel Martinez,
Yura Movsisyan (Luke Mulholland 90), Joao Plata (Devon Sandoval
78).
TEAM NEWS Real Salt Lake won for the first time on their
five-game road swing, following back-to-back losses at Colorado
and Houston, their first consecutive losses overall this season.
RSL have won twice on their travels this season – both wins coming
at Sporting KC. Real had suffered three
consecutive road defeats in between. “It's massive. We were
tight on points and we had three games in hand on them. To get
three points on the
road against a very good team is massive,” said RSL head coach
Jeff Cassar. “… Kansas City is going to have a lion's share of the
play especially at home. They present a lot of really difficult
things for opposing teams. I was really proud of our shape. We knew
if we stayed disciplined to what we wanted to do we were going to
get our chances. Now it's what you do with them and tonight we put
away three of them.”
Said midfielder Kyle Beckerman: “It's tough when you play five
in a row on the road, so I think we felt like it was a little like
we were down in the dumps a little because we lost two. But if you
spread it out, it's maybe not as bad. So it was important to get
our confidence back and get some momentum going for the next two
away games.”
The RSL opening goal was the club’s first goal since April 30,
following back-to-back attacking shutouts, ending their goalless
run after 232 minutes, the eighth-longest streak without a goal
this season.
-
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“We talked a lot about 11 people defending and 11 people
attacking. I thought we operated much better as a unit rather than
the offense worrying about the offense and the defense worrying
about the defense,” said Cassar. “We had been getting away from
what we do best. … You need a total team effort, some special plays
and you need to finish your chances when you get them.”
Juan Manuel Martinez scored his third goal of the season, all
coming in the last six matches, now with four goals in 18 career
MLS appearances.
Joao Plata recorded his fifth assist of the season, the first
goal he was involved in after recording four goals and four assists
in the first six matches of the year. Plata was making a second
consecutive start after missing out on three consecutive starts
through injury.
Javier Morales recorded his first assist of the season, making a
fourth consecutive start and playing the full 90 minutes in the
attacking midfield role.
“I thought he did a fantastic job. I thought he was a really
nice outlet for our defenders and defensive midfielders. It's not
how much he gets the ball it's how dangerous he is when he does get
it. Also we need him to have good shape when the play breaks down,”
said Cassar. “He and I had a very good talk his week. We were on
the same page. I thought his performance was one of his best all
year.”
Aaron Maund returned to the lineup after missing out on the last
two matches, coming into central defense and playing the full 90
minutes.
