Like all meetings pros, millennials seek cus-tomer service, quality product and adequate space. As deal seek-ers, however, they are signifi cantly more price sensitive than their older peers.
“A lot of millennials are twentysomethings, and the survey shows that they don’t have experience yet with negotiating,” said Maritz Travel meetings and incentive division president Steve O’Malley. “We need the effi ciency of the [electronic request for proposal] system, but you have to have the relationship with the hotels. In any meeting or event, there are a thousand variables to control. They can’t all go right. You need that relationship in order to get the best service on-site. Millennials are going to have to come out from behind that technology curtain to be truly effective.”

These preferences—and trust issues—come with millennials to the workplace and infl uence their meetings-sourcing processes, as well as their venue choices, according to the Cvent survey. Combined with their consumer tendencies, this data suggests millennials are more comfortable with technology-mediated sourcing and buying than with personal interactions, said Cvent vice president of product marketing Kevin Fliess. “It is largely because of what they have grown up with,” he said. “The consumerization of the enterprise starts to show here: Buying a vehicle, shopping for a home—[millennials] want transparency and the ability to compare their options. More than half of the decision-making is being made online before any offers. They want to shortlist their choices, and they are doing that online.”
