CES is the new NAIAS?Detroit officially became the “North AmericanInternational Auto Show” (NAIAS) about aquarter century ago. Raising its prominence inthe global auto show rankings, Detroit took thefront row along with the top European andAsian shows. Some automakers, however, don’t see Detroit as a “must-attend” event.
This year, Bentley, Jaguar-Land Rover, Miniand Tesla decided to not show its wares in theMotor City. Their claim was each brand isbetween major launches, but that’s not quitethe case. Bentley has the new Bentayga SUV,Jaguar has the F-Pace crossover, and Teslahas the new Model X, none of which haveappeared in Detroit. Could it be that Detroit islosing its luster? It’s possible, and there areseveral reasons why this could be the case.
First, there’s the weather. It may be a tiredargument, but the North American InternationalAuto Show is held two weeks into winter…inDetroit; a city not known for tropical weather inJanuary. Attendees have slogged through a footor two of snow while trying to park a few blocksaway. On the plus side, it’s warm enough insideto make you forget the adventure that awaits
after the show as patrons slide through theslush on Washington Boulevard hunting fortheir ride home.
Second, Detroit is no longer the center of theautomotive universe. One hundred years ago, more than half of the world’s motor vehicleswere produced by companies headquartered inand around Detroit. In recent years, the “Big 3”car companies have been renamed by somemedia as the “Detroit 3”, pointing out how GM,Ford, and the former Chrysler Corporation haveslipped from the globe’s 1-2-3 to 5-6-8 withmanufacturers in Japan, Germany, and SouthKorea well ahead of the former “Big 3”.
Third, there’s the competition. After the LosAngeles show moved to November, Detroit wasall alone at the beginning of the year. LA’simportance has grown over the years as moreand more companies look to SouthernCalifornia for its cultural importance. But thebigger issue is with the Consumer ElectronicsShow in Las Vegas the week before NAIAS,where the technology featured in modern carsare showcased to the electronics industry andthe world. Detroit’s taking a back seat.

6-speed automatic found in the production Titan XD
• To enhance the rugged look of the Warrior, the concept wears an
integrated skid plate up front, a unique grille, glossy fender flares, LED
headlights and driving lights, and a roof-mounted spoiler
• Black cloth and leather interior sports orange trim with an aluminum-
spoked steering wheel and additional gauges
• Production is doubtful, but the Ford F150 Raptor is the obvious target
2017 Lexus LC• Lexus’ latest flagship model comes in the form of a luxury coupe
• Based on the architecture that will underpin a number of new rear-drive models, the LC is positioned above the LS sedan but well below the exotic LF-A
• Inspired by the LF-LC concept, the LC500 won rave reviews for its long and low styling and presence• Using the same 5.0L 467hp V8 found in the Lexus IS-F sports sedan, the
2016 Lexus LF-FC concept• Just a styling concept, LF-FC points toward the next design direction for the Lexus brand and, more specifically, the next generation LS sedan
• Styled in the popular “4-door coupe” theme with its fast sloping rear windshield, LF-FC stretches nearly 209 inches long and 78.7 inches wide while standing just 55.6 inches high
• A rear-mounted fuel cell stack powers the rear wheels as well as front in-
wheel motors creating a zero emission all-wheel drive driveline

touch a panel or controls”
• Of course the concept has autonomous technology to anticipate traffic
2016 Toyota innovations• Toyota Smart Center organizes the needs of multiple drivers to help them find answers to their transportation needs by connecting “people, vehicles and communities”
• With autonomous vehicles predicted to be right around the corner, improved mapping will be in demand
• Toyota’s answer to the world’s ever-changing network of roadways is for the vehicles themselves to map the roads
• Using the vehicle’s cameras and sensors, the system will constantly map the road and relay the information to a central data center
• Toyota’s Mobility Teammate Concept demonstrates the company’s plan to automate driving by connecting vehicles with people and other vehicles in order to make driving safer and more enjoyable
• The company’s promise with its full suite of technologies is that “next generation connected and automated vehicles will optimize their own operational capabilities and deliver comfort, convenience and joy to passengers – and they’ll be arriving sooner than you think”

2016 Audi h-tron concept• As Audi prepares for its new generation of battery electric models, called “e-tron”, the brand previewed the new EV with the even more futuristic fuel cell model
• The h-tron Quattro uses a 121hp electric motor at the front and a 188hp motor in the rear to move the h-tron from a stop to 100 km/h in just seven seconds
• A hydrogen refuel takes just a few minutes and allows the h-tron to travel
as much as 370 miles on one tank, with the aid of lithium-ion batteries
• Among the car’s most interesting features are the 330 individual cells in
the fuel cell stack, the 132lb battery pack under the floor, the solar panels
to generate electricity to recharge the batteries, and the hideaway rear-
sideview cameras which replace normal sideview mirrors
2016 Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active• Foreshadowing the next-generation compact crossover, the Tiguan GTE Active concept shows that Volkswagen has the ability to design a stylish vehicle
• Large c-shaped LED driving lights and an aluminum skid plate punctuate the styling of the concept, highlighting its rugged image
• With the diesel spectre still haunting VW, the Tiguan GTE Active mates a
148hp four-cylinder and 6-speed DSG transaxle with a 12.4 kWh battery
creating 221hp hybrid; front wheels are powered by the gas engine while
the rear are electrically motivated
• Remove the roof-mounted lights, over-sized fender flares, and big tires,
the concept hides the new MQB-based Tiguan, entering production in
