Why Girls Go Astray
2016 catalog
Welcome to Why Girls Go Astray! We specialize in the art of decoupage. As our loyal customers know, we are constantly seeking and developing new offerings. Our latest collection is inspired by Magic and Mystery: spectacles emanating from a variety of environments. For our current offerings, we concentrated on expanding our Oceania and Nature categories, and added three new groups: Historical Magic, Starlets, and Showgirls.
We make our products by hand, utilizing two distinct decoupage techniques. We take pride in our ability to carefully update and replicate 18th- and 19th-century decoupage methods. The first process employs a method of affixing a hand-cut illustration onto ceramic stoneware and porcelain trays and then layering coats of resin on top, giving it depth and durability. For the second—under-glass decoupage, a variation of the potichomania process —the glass acts as both a foundation and protective finish. The relative thinness of the tray, just over an eighth of an inch thick, belies the complexity of this process. These under-glass trays are comprised of glass, multiple layers of paper, adhesive, paint, acrylic spray, and a high-quality felt pad on the bottom.
Our wares are designed to not only look spectacular, but also to provide years of service as a serving tray, repository for everyday small items, or reliquary for treasures of significance.

Decoupage under glass
In the 19th century English decoupage technique
of potichomania—or under-glass—the glass acts
as both a foundation and protective finish. The relative
thinness of the tray, one-eighth of an inch thick, belies the
complexity of the under-glass technique. Each tray is comprised of
layers of heavy weight paper, in addition to multiple coatings of paint and
clear acrylic coating, and gilding. It takes twelve separate steps and a minimum of eight
days to handcraft each tray. We’ve added a high-quality felt pad on the bottom in order to
protect your home surfaces. For decorative purposes only. Wipe clean with glass cleanser. Do not submerge in water.
