2016 CFL GAME NOTES – WEEK #9 • EDMONTON AT TORONTO
1. Game #44 – CFL Notes & Trends For Week #9:
Some individual and team highlights and records as the CFL reaches the point in the 2016 season where all clubs will have played 8 games …
1) JASON ARAKGI – SPECIAL TEAMS TACKLES
With three Special Teams Tackles last week, Jason Arakgi has now tied Wade Miller for the most in a career with 184. Arakgi reached 184 in 15 less games and needs just two more in 2016 to hit double-figures for a ninth season in a row. Jason has recorded at least one STT in 107 of his 144 career games (74.3% of his games). Among Career A/T leaders, Jason’s rate of 1.28 per game trails Brendan Rogers (1.31) and is just behind Walter Spencer. ST Tackle Rules Clarification: Players are not credited with an ST Tackle if a kick return is curtailed by a penalty … the statistical definition of a “TACKLE” is that it must “terminate the play”. However, if a return carries a penalty that is assessed post-play such as Objectionable Conduct or a late UR call, or during the tackle by the player himself such as a Face Mask call, the tackle will apply. For tackles made on fake punt plays, those are treated as ordinary defensive tackles since the play itself is a rush or pass attempt only. For it to be a Special Teams Tackle, a kick must first be made.
2) CONSECUTIVE PASS ATTEMPTS WITHOUT AN INTERCEPTION RECORD:
Darian Durant has become the first CFL player to reach 300+ attempts and 12 consecutive QB starts without throwing an interception. Durant’s current streak covers 321 consecutive pass attempts over his last 12 starts plus his final 16 attempts on Jul 26/14 (he had his first attempt that day picked off by Toronto’s Thaddeus Gibson). Durant’s passing numbers over the streak total up at 210 completions on 321 attempts (65.4%) for 2,580 yards and 12 TDs. His run of 321 attempts surpasses the previous longest interception-free streak posted by Ricky Ray across 2012-13 of 247 in a row (Oct 27/12 to Oct 14/13):

In CFL history there have been just three 2,000-yard receiving seasons with the record being held by Calgary’s Allen Pitts at 2,036 set in 1994 (Hal Patterson holds the per game record of 136.7 set in 1956). Last week, Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell had his 21-game run with a TD pass ended last week by the Riders in the Stamps’ 19-10 win at Mosaic Stadium. Two weeks ago, Edmonton’s Mike Reilly came within one game of the CFL record for consecutive 300-yard passing games reaching 8 in a row.
2016 CFL GAME NOTES – WEEK #9 • EDMONTON AT TORONTO
1. Game #44 – CFL Notes & Trends For Week #9:
5) CFL FIELD GOAL KICKERS & PUNTERS:
In recent weeks, three CFL kickers have gone on made Field Goal streaks two of which have reached double figures. Justin Medlock of the Blue Bombers is now at 14 in a row, one short of his career high of 15 straight makes. His career FG% is now up to 87.1%, the #1 success rate of all-time. Edmonton’s Sean Whyte has started a new streak and made his last 5 attempts and leads the league at 90.0% on 18-of-20. Earlier this year, Whyte extended a streak to 18 in row.
The longest current streak belongs to Calgary’s Rene Paredes who has reached 20 in a row for the third time in his career. There have been only 15 streaks longer than Paredes current run of 20 in a row. Here is an updated CFL Guide Record page:
Last week, BC’s Richie Leone had one of the finest punting performances in league history averaging 62.7 yards per kick in the win over Hamilton. His 62.4 yard average on 7 punts now ranks as the third-best single-game average in CFL history behind Nick Setta (2008) and Paul Osbaldiston (2002). For the year, Leone’s 49.7 yard average is #3 all-time at this point, while Hamilton’s Brett Maher is averaging 48.5 per punt, even with Joe Zuger and Hank Ilesic for #4 all-time among single seasons.
6 KICK RETURNERS:
Winnipeg’s Kevin Fogg had a game for the ages last week as he had a hand in seemingly everything, even in the offence. On defence, Fogg made three turnovers on his own with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Winnipeg’s offence then turned those three plays plus another three Toronto turnovers into 24 of their 34 points. Fogg also returned 6 punts for 98 yards and a 16.3 average.
Fogg joins BC’s Chris Rainey averaging more than 17 yards per punt return in 2016. The all-time CFL single-season record is 16.8 yards per return and was set by Edmonton’s Larry Highbaugh in 1975 (16.79) and edged by BC’s Leon Bright in 1980 (16.81) so both are ahead of that pace in 2016.
Hamilton’s Brandon Banks took a missed field goal back for a TD last week going officially 125 yards to help bring the Ti-Cats back from a 20-point deficit and a short-lived tie with the Lions. Banks has 3 kick return TDs already in 2016, and is threatening the all-time mark of 6 set by Chris Williams in 2012. Banks has a kick return TD once in every 4.40 games in his career (10 in 44 games), easily the highest frequency in CFL history. Chris Rainey needs a few more games to qualify but he has 4 TDs in just 21 games (5.25). 2016 CFL GAME NOTES – WEEK #9 • EDMONTON AT TORONTO
7) CFL-WIDE NOTES & TRENDS:
Completions – 51.3 per game: There have been an average of 51.3 completed passes per game made in 2016, and that is by far the highest rate in CFL history. The previous was set last year at 44.5 per game, an incredible increase of 15.3% over an already precedent-setting season in 2015.
CFL-wide kickoff average at 66.2 – all-time record: On the 272 kickoffs made in 2016, kickers have averaged 66.2 yards. That average is once again by far the highest in league history and a full 4.0 yards more than the old record set just last year of 62.2 yards per kick. In fact, the average kickoff length has increased in each of the last 6 years from the 58.7 yard mark recorded in 2011.
CFL-wide punting average at 45.4: Led by Leone and Maher, CFL punters have averaged 45.4 yards per punt in 2016. That average is the highest in the history topped only by the 45.9 yard mark set in 1983.
First Year Head Coach - Dickenson Unbeaten in 6: This is Dave Dickenson’s first year as a CFL head coach and thus far he has a 5-1-1 record for a winning percentage of .786. Here’s how that win % compares to other 1st-year coaches (min. 14 games):
First W-L Record Longest Unbeaten Coach Team Year W-L-T Pct Streak in HC Year #1
Dave Dickenson Calgary 2016 5-1-1 .786 6 games (5-0-1) Darrell Royal Edmonton 1953 12-4-0 .750 8 games (8-0) Bud Grant Winnipeg 1957 12-4-0 .750 5 games (5-0) Jerry Williams Calgary 1965 12-4-0 .750 6 games (6-0)
18 on pace for 1000 yards: This year passing has been the primary offensive tool as 80.4% of total yards (Rushing + Passing) have been gained via the completion. A total of 18 players are on pace for 1,000 yard seasons and add to that the recent success of Clarence Denmark through two games (264 yards), and several others with high yardages with missed games and the total may set a new standard. The record is 18 receivers at 1,000 yards or more set in 1993.
2. Game #44 – Edmonton at Toronto - Notes & Trends For Week #9:
Logan Kilgore: Won his debut CFL start on Jul 31/16 vs Ottawa but has had some highs and lows. Kilgore has passed for 300+ yards in each of his first two QB starts joining only FIVE other CFL QBs to reach 300+ in that setting. To date, NONE have made it to three straight games of 300+ passing yards off the top of the starting careers:
Player Team Year Yds in starts #1 & 2 Start #3
Tom Wilkinson TOR 1969 438, 368 180 Joe Adams SSK 1982 355, 312 139 Jeff Garcia CGY 1995 445, 546 219 Kerry Joseph OTT 2003 337, 340 212 Darian Durant SSK 2008 339, 349 29
The downside for Kilgore was the 5 interception game last time out vs Winnipeg, the most thrown by any CFL QB since Tanner Marsh had 5 in his start against BC on Sep 3/15. He has thrown 7 interceptions in his first two starts and 8 in his last 3 games.
Mike Reilly: This week will mark his 50th career regular season QB start for Edmonton and he brings a 27-22 record into the game. Overall, this will be Reilly’s 52nd career start (28-23) and 6th against Toronto who have the best record of any club against him (4-1). Other than Toronto, only Calgary is above .500 vs Reilly. Two weeks ago, he threw for 300+ yards in an 8th straight game, one short of the CFL record of 9 games in a row. Reilly got back to the 300-yard mark last week and for the 9th time in 10 games.
Big leads & Turnover effects: In each of Toronto’s last two defeats, they have led by as many as 7 and 13 points and not held on to win. Last week vs Winnipeg they made 4 turnovers in the 2nd half and their total of 6 giveaways led to 24 of Winnipeg’s 34 points.
Kenny Shaw & Diontae Spencer: In his last 4 games, Shaw has 29 catches for 350 yards (3 for 30+ yards) and 2 TDs on 40 targets. Spencer set a new CFL standard last week with a season-high 19 targets making 11 catches for 146 yards.
Deon Lacey & JC Sherritt: A Shaw Top Performer last week. Lacey has 24 tackles and an interception in his last 3 games. Sherritt has an interception in each of the last two games and 3 in his last 5 games.
Llevi Noel: Ranks #2 in ST Tackles but added offence last game with a 34-yard TD strike from Cody Fajardo (2 catches, 51 tds).
Toronto - +9 and -7: In their 4 wins, the Argos have a T/O Ratio of +9; in their 3 losses they are -7.
