Regulations and guidelinesThe following regulations and guidelines must beobserved:
– Hoval technical information and installation instructions
– RelevantBritishStandardsandGuidelines– Hydraulic and technical control regulations– Local Building regulations
Water qualityHeating water: EuropeanstandardBSEN14868:2005
and VDI guideline 2035 must be observed. Particularnotemustbetakenofthefollowingregulations:
- Hoval boilers and water heaters are suitable for heating systems without significant oxygenation(systemtype1inaccordancebelowwithBSEN14868:2005)
- Systemswith - Continuous oxygenation (e.g. floor
heating without diffusion-proof plastic pipes) or
- Intermittent oxygenation(e.g.frequenttoppinguprequired)mustbefittedwithasystem separator
- Treated heating water must be checked at leastonceperyearormorefrequentlyasspecified by the inhibitor manufacturer.
- If,inthecaseofexistingsystems(e.g.boilerreplacement),thewaterqualityoftheexistingheatingwatercomplieswithVDI2035, it is not recommended that the system be refilled. VDI 2035 also applies to top-up water.
- Before filling new systems, or, if applicable, existingsystems, theheatingsystemmustbe professionally cleaned and flushed. The heating system must be flushed before the boiler is filled.
- Componentsoftheboiler/heatexchangerthat come into contact with water are made of ferrous materials and stainless steel.
- The combined chloride, nitrate and sulphate content of the heating water must not exceedatotalof50mg/l.
- Once the heating has been in operation for
6 – 12 weeks, the pH value of the heating water should be between 8.3 and 9.5.
Water for filling and topping up the system:- Untreated drinking water is generally most
suitable for filling and topping up a system with a Hoval boiler. However, the water qualityoftheuntreateddrinkingwatermustalways comply with VDI 2035 or must be demineralisedand/ortreatedwithinhibitors.ThespecificationsofBSEN14868:2005must be observed.
- In order to maintain the boiler’s high efficiency level and to avoid overheating of the heating surfaces, the values in the table belowmustnotbeexceeded.Thesevaluesare calculated in relation to the boiler output (the smallest individual boiler in the case of multiple boiler systems) and the water content of the system.
- Thetotalquantityofwaterusedtofillandtop up the system during the boiler’s life mustnotexceedavalueequivalenttothreetimes the water content of the system.
Heating System- The boilers must not be installed in areas
where halogen compounds occur and could enter the combustible air (e.g. washing, drying, workshop areas, hairdressing salons etc).
- Halogen compounds can be caused by clean ing, degreasing and solvent agents, adhesivesandbleachingliquids.
- A suitable supply of combustion air must be guaranteed. It must not be possible to close theairsupplyapertures.Minimumfreeareafor the air supply aperture is 13cm2 per 1kW boiler output at a flow of 4.2m3/hrper1kWboiler output.
- High and low level ventilation should be provided (1/3 high level and 2/3 low level split).
Space requirementssee separate dimensional information on pages 9 & 10.
Use of Buffer VesselTheBioLytWoodPelletboilerisdesigned
Engineeringto be fully automatic and is supplied with an automaticfiringorignitionsequencethatwillbring the boiler on from cold without manual intervention and has a timed automatic burnout once the boiler has satisfied its set point temperature returning the boiler to an ‘out’ condition.Fromcoldtheboilerwouldtypicallyreachitsmodulatingmodeafterapprox20minutesandsimilarlyittakesapprox20minutes for the burnout to bring the boiler from the modulating mode to out. Once the burnout process is initiated it has to take the boiler out. It is therefore strongly recommended that a load balancing buffer or accumulator vessel is included in the primary boiler circuit to ensure that any sudden or variable system requirementscanbemetpromptly.Pleasecontact Hoval Technical Department for advice on sizing.
Heating InstallationLow return temperature protection A boiler low return temperature protection kit is supplied with all BioLyt boilers to ensure that theminimumreturntemperaturerequirementof 45ºC is met. Details of this kit are shown on page12ofthisleafletandalsoshownonthetypical hydraulic schematics.
Hydraulic system DesignThe boiler hydraulic system design must complywithanofficialHovalschematic.Variousexamplesareincludedinthisleafletand a range of schematics can be downloaded from www.hoval.co.uk, or can be supplied on request.PleasecontactHovalTechnicalforfurther advice.
Noise AttenuationThe following steps can be taken to reduce noise:- Makethewalls, ceilingandflooroftheboiler
plant room as solid as possible, fit sound absorbers in the air supply ducting, provide conduit supports and brackets with sound dampening fittings.
- Iftherearelivingquarterseitheraboveor below the boiler plant room, fit rubber vibration dampers underneath the base channels of the boiler and connect pipework withflexibleconnections.
- Connect circulating pumps to the system withflexibleconnections.
Expansion vessel / expansion- It is recommended that the system expansionvesselisconnectedtotheheating system with a cold fill loop. This means that the entire system will not need to be emptied in order to carry out work on the vessel.
- In the case of open vented, the system heightmustbesuchthattherequiredminimum operating pressure is maintained.
Safety valve & automatic air vent- A safety valve and automatic air vent must
be fitted to all boilers.- A Hoval safety valve and automatic air vent set(c/wpressuregauge)isincludedwiththeboilerasanaccessory.Pleaseseepage11.

As a result clean, low-emission combustion is achieved. The horizontal combustion results inaflameshapesmiliartothatofanoilorgasburner. This combustion system achieves a highpelletburnoutrate.Mainlyduetothelarge, mostly refractory lined combustion chamber, it is possible to acheive a large residence time of the hotgasesaswellassufficientlyhighcombustiontemperatures.
Hotwaterissubsequentlygeneratedbyheatexchangebetweenthehotgasesandboilerwater by means of a thermolytic secondary heat exchangesurface.Thesecondaryheatexchangesurface is automatically cleaned by means of a motor driven mechanical cleaning device. This improves the efficiency, lowers maintenance requirementsandensuresaconstantlowfuelusage.
Boiler Cleaning RegimeAutomaticashremovalwithintegratedashbox–Emptingoftheashboxwillneedtobecarriedout periodically by the operator. In addition, there isarequirementfortheoperator(ormaintenanceengineer) to routinely take the boiler off line, to clean out the combustion chamber, retort, and ID fan chamber. This will involve a partial strip down atthefrontandtopoftheboiler.PleaserefertotheBioLytOperatingandTechnicalManualpagesfor further information. Flues and chimneys
General Guidelines- Individualboilerchimneysandfluesshouldbe
used.
- Thechimney/fluemustbegastight,imperviousto moisture, non corrosive and acid proof.
- Thechimney/fluedesignshouldencompasstheminimum number of bends - any bends should be swept - avoid excessively long horizontalrunsandifpossiblehavetheflueenterthemainchimney riser at an angle of 45o to minimise the flueductresistance.
- The flue should be fitted with the combined draught stabiliser and pressure relief damper that is supplied loose with all BioLyt boilers (see included accessories). This damper should be installedwithin1metreof theboilerflueoutletconnection.Pleasenotethatfittingofthis itemisexcludedbyHoval.
- We recommend flues should be at least 200mmI/Diaaftertheabovedamper.

Fuel Pellet Storage Room, Silo or BunkerThe design of the intended fuel pellet storage room, silo or bunker must be approved by Hoval prior to confirm ation of an order being given.
Pellet Fuel SpecificationThepelletsshouldbeformedfromCLEANorVIRGINTIMBERandtothespecificationoutlinedinwoodpelletspecificationCEN/TS14961.
ThefuelMUSTNOTcontainhalogenatedorganiccompounds or heavy metals as a result of treatment with wood preservatives or coatings.Typically the wood pellet fuel would have the following As Received properties,

Hoval do not endorse any particular wood pellet manufacturer, however it is recommended that fuel is supplied against the specification indicated, and the supplier operates well maintained vehicles and fully trained delivery drivers to ensure that the boiler and fuel transfer system are presented with well sized wood pellets, which are free from any contamination.
Boiler operation
Hot water for heating is generated by the controlled combustionofqualitywoodpelletsthroughathermolyticheatexchanger.Thewoodpelletsareconveyed by a dosing screw from the pellet hopper over a drop tube to the boiler feed screw. The speed of this dosing screw modulates in line with the heat demand.
Degassing of the pellets takes place in the rear part of the burner tube into which primary air is supplied by a high pressure fan. In this way the combustiongasesgeneratedarethoroughlymixedwith secondary air, which is supplied by an induced draught fan within the front section of the burner tube.

Chimney sizes and height will need to take into accountthefollowing:
1) Clean Air Act.
2) Local Regulations.
3) Considerations to adjacent buildings.
4) The discharge to atmosphere of the products of combustion that may contribute to health dangers and be such to minimise the impact of the same. When used with the correct quality fuel, the BioLyt meets the requirements of Class 3 of EN 303-5 in this respect.
IMPORTANTCondensationfromthefluesystemshouldnotbe allowed to run back into the BioLyt boiler. A suitable trap arrangement must be provided to ensurethisrequirementismet.
Guidance for sizing flues and chimneys is given in CIBSE and HVCA guides and also Hoval Technical Data Sheets. Flues should conform to the relevant British Standards, Codes of Practice and current legislation.
- The flue design will be such that the chimney heightshouldprovidesufficientbuoyancytogiveanegative pressure condition of between 5 and 20 Pa at the boiler flue outlet. The chimney and flueshould, undernormalfiringconditions, providea draught at the boiler outlet.
- With a cold chimney some external draughtassistancemayberequirede.g.fluefan.
- Commonflueheadersmustbeavoided.
- Steps should be taken to prevent orminimisecondensationformingwithinthefluebyusingtwinwalled insulated systems.
- Adequate doors should beprovided in fluesandchimneys for cleaning and inspection purposes. This is particularly important on any horizontal section.
- Fluesshouldbesupportedindependentlytopreventanyundueweightandforcesduetoexpansionbeingtransmitted to the boiler outlet connection.

Hoval BioLyt (50-160)
The successful and effective biomass installation is dependant on a well planned and installed pellet feeding system to ensure delivery of pelletstothepointofcombustioninthecorrectvolume, quantityandquality.
With regard to the bulk storage or wood pellet fuel store the following simple guidelines offer advice to assist in the design and sizing for a successful installation.
A bulk wood pellet fuel store should be located as close as possible to the biomass boiler. The design of the fuel store and the recovery ofthepelletsfromthestoreandthesubsequenttransferofthefuelto the boiler should be kept as simple as possible. Tall thin storage, such as purpose designed silos, often represent the most effective way of storing wood pellet fuel and can lead to the best use of a given storage volume. The angle of the discharge cone from such a silo wouldtypicallybe60ºtoensurecompletemassflowfromthestore.Apossible alternative to a storage silo would be a bespoke build bunker store.Thesetypicallyrequirealargerfloorareaandarelesseffectiveintermsoftheavailablerecoverablevolumeoffuel.Someprofilingof the bunker base should be considered – minimum angles of 45º shouldbeadoptedifprofilingbunker–whichwillsignificantlyreducethe volume available for the storage of pellet fuel. The natural angle of reposeofthefuelwillvarydependingonthequalityofthewoodpelletbutwilltypicallybegreaterthan45º.Againthiscansignificantlyreducethe recoverable volume available in the pellet store. Whichever fuel storedesignisadopteditmustbesuchthatit:

PelletrecoveryfromthefuelstorewouldtypicallyeitherbeviaPick-upauger(s) angled into the bunker or directly from the outlet of a coned purposebuiltstoreorsilo.Fromthebunkerorsilothewoodpelletfuelisdeliveredtothetransferboxofthestoker.
Therearethreekeyfactorsthatinfluencethesizeofthepelletstore.

Hoval can offer a number of silo based fuel store options or advise on most appropriate use of available space for a bespoke build fuelstore.
