Chairperson’s Report
Wow, what a great season we’ve just had, which was kinda lucky, because we started this season with a new Nipper Committee (except for Mark Byrne), a bunch of new Age Managers and heaps of smiling new Nippers. It could easily have been a recipe for disaster. Neither John nor I had any idea about what needed to be done to ensure a smooth-running nippers club. Thankfully Darren Marshall and Brian Robinson (despite resigning from the committee last year) kept a close eye on us and made themselves available when we needed their help. We were also helped along by some amazing weather this season and even the lake co-operated (most of the time) to ensure we had a great season on the beach and in the water. Enrolments
Prior to the start of the season, the new committee’s major goal was to retain the nipper membership from last year and provide a safe and fun environment where the lifesavers of the future could grow and make new friends. With this in mind, we successfully enrolled 360 nippers (slightly down on last year’s record of 369 kids) and I hope you’ll agree that we delivered on our goal of providing a safe and fun place to spend Sunday mornings. We were also able to have more social functions this year (BBQ’s, Kid’s Disco’s etc) which added to the sense of community that surrounds our club and provided a great opportunity for parents and nippers to relax with mates.

Training / Coaching
In recent seasons, we have provided Board training for (proficient) Nippers with a professional coach, this year we added the services of a professional surf-swim coach to aid those nippers who want to compete in surf swim races / relays / ironman etc. The feedback from these initiatives has been very positive and we plan to re-commence these in late August / Early September of the coming season. To be eligible for these programs, nippers must have passed their water proficiency and parents are required to actively participate at training. Thanks to Bodi, Maddie and Darren Marshall for all your efforts helping the nippers gain valuable skills. Thanks to Gordy Coburn and Steve Haggett who provided the SLS educational training. Carnivals & Results
This season we saw a large increase in the numbers of our nippers wanting to participate at carnivals, and by all accounts the carnivals were both fun and a little chaotic. It’s also amazing how athletic some of our kids are – special acknowledgment should go to Keeley Holmes who came 2nd in the State Championships for 1km beach run and Isaac Sheriff who took 1st Place at the Branch Carnival for Flags, Jess Tyson and Kalan Love who both took 1st Place at the Branch Carnival for 1km beach run. Bonnie Joergensen has had a successful first year of carnival competition along with the U/8 girls beach relay team. Also Mitch Byrne & Oscar Jessup for their placings at the recent SNB Branch Special Needs Carnival at Mona Vale. Sponsors
As you know we are a volunteer organisation, as such we rely heavily on donations received from our sponsors and the wider community to provide equipment and gear for our nippers to use. This year, Sarah Ryan (Nipper Secretary) worked tirelessly to generate greater community engagement and drive sponsorship interest. We are exceptionally grateful to the following sponsors who have supported us and contributed to our success: L J Hooker Narrabeen No1 Roofing McGrath Real Estate Hunter Real Estate JC’s Pizza Elanora Signarama Age Managers (are Awesome)
On a week in - week out basis we wouldn’t have achieved anything without our awesome Age Managers – on behalf of the committee, parents and nippers I’d like to say a massive thank you for your contribution and your commitment to our nippers. It’s easy to forget that our Age Managers have volunteered their time often at the expense of seeing their own children in other nipper age groups. If you get a chance, please thank your kids Age Manager – their worth their weight in gold! Sadly, a few of our Age Managers are leaving us next season, so we’ll be on the hunt for new Age Managers – if you’d like to take on the role, please don’t be shy and let myself or any member of the committee know.

Nipper Committee
As I mentioned, we started this season with a new committee, we all brought lots of ideas and passion to the table, but we had zero experience in running a nipper club. Fast forward to today and we are a tight knit group of parents who share a common goal and interest in our kids growing and being a part of a community. I’m super proud of our committee and our achievements this season and I look forward to working together with them in the off-season to prepare for an even better 2017-18. Each member of the committee has contributed above and beyond what is expected and our club is better off because of them. Thanks, and appreciation goes to: Sarah, Toni, Mark, Richard, Murray, Brooke, Federico and Sascha you helped make my job easy (Thanks to you, people think I don’t do anything). I’d also like to give special props to John Perry my co-chairperson (he’s the guy who organises the BBQ’s and is stressed out every Sunday until we all go home) – thanks mate, you’re a champion and I couldn’t have asked for a better chairperson. Next Season
I’m stoked to report that this year we received significant sales from the Uniform shop, BBQ’s and Kid’s Disco events (thanks DJ Jordan), we plan to run a similar schedule of events next season and welcome any ideas or thoughts you might have to improve this side of our club. In the coming season, we are planning to grow our attendance at carnivals and will be introducing a march past team and a sprint coach (if we can find one) for our competitive kids. We’ll be expanding our use of team app to manage our schedule and we are also exploring an e-commerce site for our clothing sales – yep you’ll be able to order NN sluggo’s online! Finally, on behalf of myself, John Perry and the committee, I’d like to thank you - the nippers and parents who come to North Narrabeen every Sunday and make our club great! It’s been great hanging out with you this year and I look forward to doing it again next season (if my wife lets me). All the best, Dave Johnson & John Perry Co-Chairmen Junior Activities

At the end of the 2013-14 season the Junior Activities account was amalgamated with the General Club and all finances were managed through the Senior Club Executive Committee with details to be provided in the forthcoming North Narrabeen SLSC Annual Report (July 2017). However, we note that the clothing store made a great return for the club this season, selling over $23,000 worth of stock. A big thank you to Sasha Carroll with the help of Sarah Ryan & Toni Cadden for managing the store so well this season A huge thank you to John Perry, Dave Johnson, Richard Jessup and all of the nippers parents for managing the BBQ this season, no doubt one of the hardest jobs in the club. Not only have they provided an enjoyable environment for our nipper’s families to relax and enjoy their Sunday mornings, as well as Saturday afternoons, they have again made a significant contribution to the club raising over $7,000. 100% of funds raised from BBQ go back into the club and towards purchasing new equipment for our nippers Major sponsor
We are thrilled to have two new major sponsors for the club this year! Many thanks to the crew at No1 Roofing who have been essential in our ability to upgrade boards and equipment this year To the team at LJ Hooker Narrabeen who are passionate about their support for the surf club and through their sponsorship we could provide this season age manager shirts Minor sponsors
Our gratitude goes out to more of our newest sponsors this season, thank you to the team at McGrath Real Estate, Hunter Real Estate and The Manly Lions Club! Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated by the club and our Nippers Supporters
Bakers delight at Warriewood have again provided free supply of bread for the BBQ and JC’s Pizza in Elanora have sponsored the Nippers awards each week – Thank You! Chubby Welsh Auto, our local mechanic in Garden Street Narrabeen, looked after our board trailer again. It clocked up plenty of miles this season and never missed a beat We also would like to extend our thanks to Signarama for their ongoing support again this year We thank our sponsors and supporters for their generous support of North Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club. Our club is a non-profit organisation that is run by volunteers and we are in constant need of financial assistance to continue our good work on the beach. If you or your business would like to support NNSLSC please contact us for details on how we can form a great partnership for the benefit of both NNSLSC and your business and become part of the NNSLSC family.

Under 6 Girls
What a fantastic season the 2016 / 2017 Nippers was for the U/6 Girls. With almost picture perfect weather every Sunday morning, the girls in the green hats with the big smiles were always ready to go and always tried to the best of their ability. Each week we regularly had more than 35 girls and I'm sure the parents well agree that it was great to see their progress from week to week. Over the 4 months that the U/6 girls Nippers ran, we saw some dramatic improvements in all the girls’ skills and confidence. They started by learning how to dive forward in the pool when the Lagoon was closed, then progressed to using boards, doing flag races, and every session started with a hill / beach runs. They then progressed to ocean wades and learnt about currents in the surf, learnt about the signs around the beach, did an introductory first aid session and learnt about all the things Surf Patrol uses on the beach to keep everyone safe.
When the lagoon opened, we regularly did wades in the current (the alley), did a few short (challenging) lagoon swims, practised floating, challenged the parents to tug-of-wars, did many different obstacle courses and learnt how to use the boards.
A special mention in that regard goes out to: Abi, Charlotte, Cienna, Eva, Ferne, Fin, Giaan, Holly, Indiana, Kiva, Lerryn, Indiana, Jessica, Maddison, Madison, Sarah and Yasmin. These girls not only learnt how to paddle boards prone, but mostly ended up quite confident paddling on their knees which is amazing for their age group. I want to say a big thankyou to the parents who helped run the mornings. Your time and assistance was deeply appreciated and was one of the key reasons that each of the Nippers sessions ran so smoothly and we got such a great outcome for the girls. Looking forward to seeing the girls on the beach again next season.
Matt Ingersole - Age Manager
Under 6 Boys
The under 6 boys were super enthusiastic this year. For their first year in nippers they did so well learning about flags, ocean swims, paddling on boards and obstacle courses. Their beach swims and flags improved significantly through the season as their confidence grew. Their competitive side also grew bigger during flags, which were usually too close to call. Each week they ran their hearts out to be the fastest nipper on the beach! They also had a bunch of fun - especially when it was tug of war time. It couldn't have been possible without the help of so many parents who were more than willing to jump into the water and lend a hand. It also wouldn't be possible without our age group managers who were all very new to managing nippers! We look forward to another fantastic season in 2017/2018!
They really were an amazing and enthusiastic bunch of young boys - we hope you had as much fun as us!
Theo, Karen, Andy & Maria - Age Managers
Under 7 Girls
What a fantastic season we had this year. The opening of the lake plus great weather every week meant we were able to do so many activities with the girls. Throughout the season, we did sand dune running, flags, sprints, wades, tug-of-war, swims, and board paddling. The girls tried paddling on their knees in the lake and by the end of the season, we had them catching their first waves in the surf. We had a few nervous tears on that day but to see the smiles on their faces when they came in on their first waves made it so worth it. We had a great water balloon fight one day and on our last day of the season, we saw all the mums and dads trying their hand at the flags. No competitive parents in our group at all!! Ha ha Heath and I would just like to say the world’s biggest thank you to the parents of the under 7 girls. Every week, we had parents putting up their hands to help with water safety, setting the flags, helping with the board paddling etc. This wonderful involvement made our job so easy and we always felt like a team, providing the girls with a fun experience in a very safe and supportive environment. We had a great day too towards the end of the season with the under 7 boys, racing one on one against them in flags. It was amazing to see the competitive spirit come out that day as well. We are truly lucky to have the best “playground” for nippers at North Narrabeen with the beach AND the beautiful lagoon. We loved every minute of this season and can’t wait for the next. Well done to all our gorgeous girls!
Kate & Heath Kiely - Age Managers
Under 7 Boys
What a fantastic season our Under 7 boys had. They all developed their water skills with great enthusiasm and beach activities were hotly competed in. Flags: All the boys took to this activity well and were not afraid to race each other to grab a flag. They really enjoyed the competition and have learnt how to quickly turn around and race to the flag. Water flags also proved a big hit and they splashed and dashed through the water to reach a flag. Beach Sprints: The boys were all keen to race along the sand. They showed great teamwork and always cheered on the other competitors. Boards: The boys really loved this activity. They became very confident in controlling the board and were all very keen to practice rescuing a friend. Water Confidence: From the beginning of the season the boys have been extremely confident in the water activities. Its been great to watch them take on the challenge of the conditions.
North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2015/16 Page | 11
They have experienced swimming in the pool, wading through the lake and taking on the surf. I think some of the highlights of the season have been watching the boys tackle every activity with such excitement. They have had fun versing their parents in the tug of war and chasing each other through obstacle courses as well as riding the boards in the surf. We’d like to thank all the parents for their help and support throughout the season and we really appreciate how quickly you jump in to help and encourage the boys.
Sarah Woods and Nick – Age Manager
Under 8 Girls
What a great season for the U8 girls, so many changes and challenges they faced and they all came through it with flying colours. Firstly we welcomed a couple of new girls at the beginning of the season and sadly we lost Chris as one of our age managers. A big thank you to Chris for guiding and caring for the girls through the previous 2 years. Our rock - maybe Man Mountain might be a more appropriate name for Andrew Macca McPherson (who we love and adore!) lead the way this year for the girls. We graduated from the lake to the surf which was fun and challenging at the same time. We did surf training when the conditions allowed us. We had some good days when the girls learnt how to get under waves properly and to try and body surf them in. Still a lot of work to do on these techniques, especially this coming season. Another change was being eligible to compete in carnivals. We had 4 girls compete in the 2 carnivals we were invited to. Kiana, Mixy, Zahli and Bonnie did themselves and the club proud with their great results and effort from great teamwork. Especially in Branch Championships where we were competing against clubs fielding up to 15 girls and still coming in the top 3 with only 4 girls with a couple of wins and places, what a super effort!!! All said we had such a great group of girls myself and Andrew will greatly miss them over the winter break. You couldn't hand pick such a great group of girls who are so different to each other but just get along so well. Andrew and I couldn't do what we do without the parents who help us out week in week out! A very big THANK YOU to you all! You guys are more important than you realise. Our kids wouldn't be able to do any water activities at all and the beach activities would be painfully slow. The more parent involvement the better for the kids and you'll enjoy it as well! All in all Andrew and I are looking forward to next season to taking your girls forward in learning more about the surf which is so important living in this area! Also you guys are awesome to hang out with, we do count you all as our friends, that's what the surf club family stands as! All the best.
Andrew & Garry - Age Manager
Under 8 Boys
As our first year of managing an age group for nippers we were unsure of what exactly to expect. You can bet there was plenty of worrying about getting through the hour without standing around wondering what we should do or not being able to get the boys to
participate but in the end we needn’t have concerned ourselves. We had plenty of parents willing to help and the boys were amazingly well behaved……... most of the time!
From a distance nippers appears to be about diving at a piece of hose in the sand, running through water and paddling a board around but we hope we delivered much more to the boys this season. We performed activities where we needed to stay together as a team, we had sessions on rips and how to identify a rip and get out of one should we find ourselves caught. The boys all have their favourite Nippers activities but we tried to make it fun for everyone, occasionally throwing in some random game. We hope the boys have left the season more confident in their water abilities and more knowledgeable about the beach.
To all the parents that helped, thanks. We could not have done it without you. Those that regularly stuck the flags in the sand, or donned the stunning green lycra tops and braved the water. For those competitive parents that took part in the flags on the final nipper’s day, be glad I didn’t have a camera available.
Finally to the under 8 boys, thanks for a wonderful season. To those that were lucky enough to take home a medal, well done. To those that competed at the Narrabeen carnival, we are very proud to have had you represent North Narrabeen.
For all of you, congratulations for everything you have done, whether it be winning flags or just being able to paddle around on the board without falling off (it is harder than it looks).
We hope to see you all next year.
Richard & Troy – Age managers
Under 9 Girls
The U/9 Girls had an even bigger year than last season, with learning how to conquer their fear of the waves in their first swim and board paddle events in
the open ocean. Proving to themselves that they could swim/paddle through the break around the buoys and back to the beach many time this season. The girls and their parents should be very proud of their achievements this season. The U/9 girls also stepped up in their representation of our club, with a large contingent of nippers attending both the Narrabeen and the Nipper Nats Carnivals. Thankfully, this year we were blessed with amazing weather and contestable surf / lake conditions and I’m proud to say that our U9 girls took up the challenge and really developed their skills. Long gone are the tears from previous seasons, replaced with enthusiasm and determination to run, swim and paddle faster / stronger. Whilst all of our girls improved out of sight, there were a few nippers that deserve to be mentioned here: Ella McGregor, Zara Sharp and Grace Johnson stood out in the water events. Shala La, Kate and Tess Milbourne, Scarlette Colnaric, Elisha Keating and Leila Harper all brought their A-game on the beach events. A big congratulations (and thank you) to all the girls that braved the carnivals and also their parents who got up at 6am on Sunday mornings to get their kids there - I'm sure everyone is now enjoying
North Narrabeen SLSC – Nippers Annual Report 2015/16 Page | 12
their Sunday sleep ins - before the netball / soccer seasons commence. Each week we have had fantastic attendance on Sunday mornings with a consistent turnout of 20 or so girls - well done everyone for turning up rain or shine and enthusiastically participating with a smile. Next year we will again step up our approach to carnivals and we hope to form our first march past team as well as take advantage of the swim and board coached provided by the club. I encourage all parents to keep up the swimming lessons and/or squad training throughout the winter months. All in all, I’m very excited to see the great progress the girls have made with their surf confidence, and can’t wait to see what we can do next year in developing our children into future lifesavers and confident and safe beachgoers. I look forward to seeing you all back bigger and better next year.
Melanie Watt - Age Managers
Under 9 Boys
The difference between this season and last is almost immeasurable. Last year we drenched with rain, toxic lake water and continuous dangerous surf. This year we had excellent conditions for almost the entire season, instead of running from the rain we were hiding from the sun!
The fantastic weather really helped our U9 boys progress and develop their surf skills, with numerous opportunities to paddle and swim in the ocean - it was a pleasure to watch our boys grow and develop.
On occasions our attendance levels slipped a little and it was then that we combined with the Under 9 girls for a bit of friendly competition. Did i say friendly? I meant FIERCE competition. The boys only just edged out the girls in the final of the flags. And the girls showed it how it was done in the 1km beach run. Our U9 Boys have grown in strength and speed and this was particularly evident in the flags and beach sprints were they are getting quicker off the mark in their starts and have become experts at diving in low to grab the flag. I think we will have some gun competitors for under 10’s next year. Most of all we have had loads of FUN! Obstacle courses, tug of war and relays against the Parents are always a big hit, lots of laughs and friendly rivalry. A big thank you to all the parents who have pitched in to assist with activities we wouldn’t have been able to do it without you. Your support and enthusiasm is much appreciated.
Peter Gledhill - Age Managers
Under 10 Girls
Another season of Nippers has come to an end. Times flies when you’re having fun and I think we had a great season despite the fact that we were a little low on numbers towards the end of the season.
All of the girls passed their proficiency test at the start of the season, however there were a couple that were not entirely confident in the water. To boost confidence and improve boarding and swimming skills we focused a lot on those aspects of Surf and Live Saving and it was clear that all of the girls improved their swimming and boarding skills during the season. Where we had to conduct boarding and swimming in the rock pool during the first two point’s day on the third points day we went into the surf. It was a big challenge for the girls as there was a very strong current but everybody that competed that day made it during the swim and on the board. Towards the end of the season we did, on request of the girls, we did multiple iron women events combing running, swimming and boarding skills. The lagoon was the perfect location to do this and although the runs were not particularly easy all the girls finished the events. This has been my fifth season with this group and I hope to see everybody again next season. Also, a big thank you to all the parents that helped out during the season, you are all wonderful.
Jeroen Krabbe – Age Manager
Under 10 Boys
A fantastic season was had by all, especially when the weather permitted us to be able to surf the waves. Congratulations to Isaac on his performances at local carnivals on the beach running track. Well done to Kade, Max, Pete and James for competing in the board and swim at carnivals. Boys keep up the good work.
I would also like to mention Hunter, the 2 Oscars, the 2 Josh’s, Lachlan, Ben, Brandon and Mitchell, keep trying and improving. Well done in turning up every weekend and having fun. Lastly I would just like to thank Andrew my fellow age manager for assisting me with these great kids, also to the many parents that have helped Andrew and myself during the season.
Thank you for all the kids that turned up during the season,
having fun and listening to important Life Saving instructions, we appreciate it. All the best for your winter sports and hope to see you on the beach next season.
Greg Kelly & Andrew - Age Managers
Under 11 Girls
The 2016/2017 season has been a great opportunity for the Under 11 girls to improve their water skills with many opportunities to get into the surf and practice their open water swimming and board paddling skills. The core group of girls

Under 11 Boys The Under 11 boys had a great season with a small but very 'spirited' group turning up every week. The mix was good with a few 'seasoned pro's' showing a few newcomers how it's done! We had loads of fun both on the beach and in the water and loads of progress was made by everybody. Surf conditions meant that we didn't get in the ocean that often but when we did the boards were paddled with power and waves were ridden with Panache!! Notable performances were: Everybody!! Will, Ethan, Kaylan - Fast on the Beach and in the Surf! Harry and Matthew - Superb improvement and some great results
against the experienced guys. Roll on next year. Jason!!! Always giving it 100% and holding his own despite
playing up a year. Hero of the group. We also teamed up with the under 12s and it was great to see Ethan schooling them at flags!! All in all a great season and we are looking forward to seeing everybody next season.
Matt Barker - Age Manager
Under 12 and 13 Girls
2016/17 was a great season for the U12/13 girls. They have become a really cohesive group, with all girls giving their best. A fair few of them have taken nippers seriously this year and have turned up to board and swim training as well as attending carnivals, with some great results. These results would never have happened without the friendship and support of their peers. Nippers has now become somewhere for the girls to hang out and have some fun with their close friends, which makes the age managers role incredibly easy and rewarding. A huge farewell to Maia this year who has moved out of the area. She will be missed by all girls.
A big thankyou to the parents of these girls, they have been a great help, whether it’s paddling out with them for water safety or taking note of places on the finish line, giving up hours of your time at carnivals, volunteering for BBQs. You are incredible role models for your daughters. Looking forward to a great 2017/18 season, where the girls will continue to advance their surf lifesaving skills by starting their SRC training. Great effort this season girls, congratulations to all.
John Tyson, Mark Byrne & Mark Bauchop - Age Managers
Under 12, 13 & 14 Boys
12s - Another year is over and its been a good one with plenty of days in the water and some nice hot days, thanks to Rod and Vanessa for the group effort we’ve had once again. We had some good water time this season with all the boys improving their swimming skills and their board skills. Charlie helped make some big improvements to Hayden, Connor and David’s board skills while Blake was making good progress till he injured himself and ended his season. 13s - Well done to Charlie Kelly the only one in this age group, he turned up every week without fail ready to go, and has helped the 12 boys with their board skills. 14s Well done to Angus Marshall with no one else in his age group he has been the younger age groups and setting a good example. Well done to all the boys in these 3 groups ,keep up the good work and keep having fun at the beach, hope to see you all back next summer and good luck with your winter sports. Thanks from Peter, Rod, Vanessa and all the parents
