Around Hicksville Wow Bob, Thanks for the publicity in the Newsletter. Cannot tell you how much I appreciate your including my Geo Washington story. Hopefully someone sees and remembers the classic "spitball." Those were the best days of my life. How I miss Hicksville. Wish I knew you back in the day!!!!

Julia White Weiss 1963 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi, Thanks for the newsletter. I look forward to reading and seeing pictures each month. Fantastic job! Any news of a 1962 55th reunion in 2017 or a 1962 Florida reunion. I live in Coconut Creek. Retired last year and not bored. Attached is a picture of my son, Stephen and me.

Thanks for the photo. You know the mind is a funny thing. I remember going to a 10th and 20th reunion when most of our kids were still young. We would all whip out pictures of our kids and everyone would Google over each photo. I think I have the same mindset that has been fairly consistent for the past 30 or so years. You said, "attached is a picture of my son, Stephen and me. My mind already created a picture and when I saw the photo, I was expecting a smaller person. You get my drift??? Nice picture and I'm glad you get a chance to share time together. I'm lucky that my daughter and grand daughter live close by and we can share time together. My wife died of Alzheimers back in September of 2013. My son, his wife and my two grandsons live in Wake Forest after relocating from Bethpage earlier this year. I don't see them. Thanks for sharing. love yah bob You saw the photo of the reunion committee in the current newsletter having breakfast together. In a correspondence from Karen, they are planning on a 55th in 2017, so look forward to a great reunion. Hey Bob, Thanks for the history of you and your family. LOL! This is my youngest son, 41 yrs. old, single, and lives in California. Yikes, I am that old?! We went on a road trip last year and also went to Vegas (for my 70th). My oldest son, Paul, would have been 43. He had a surfing accident here in FL and died 2/26/02; sad and beyond belief. Well, need to get outside and do some gardening. Regards, Elaine ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear HixNews I cannot express my gratitude enough for the wonderful job you have all done on our Newsletter. Living 3,000 miles away, I would have lost touch with my Alma Mater if it were not for the tireless efforts of the entire staff at the Hix News. Keep up the good work!

Art Pardo 1962 Henry Lichtenstein 1959 Thanks for those kind words, Art. I, too, live 3,000 miles away from Hicksville (also in California). A note from Cheryl Gries Brown

Warren Gluck’s festive decorated house. Thanks Warren. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A group of U.S. Veterans have chartered several AMA River Cruises with special discounted rates for themselves, their friends and their families. Imagine a wonderful Springtime Cruise of Paris and a tour of the Normandy Beach area on May 20, 2016. Another cruise that is scheduled for October 24, 2016 is the “Melodies of the Danube”. Travel the beautiful Danube and experience the sights and sounds that have long inspired musicians, poets and artists. Finally a “Christmas Market Cruise on the Danube” on November 24, 2016.

and reminded myself that I am limited in finding photos for many who are in classes beyond 1980. I have requested, on several occasions, for someone from each class to act as an official scanner when I need photos for the newsletter. I'm going to send out some new requests to see if I get a response. I think they might have a copy of all years at the Hicksville Library. I did have a contact at the library who was helping us accumulate the listing for our proposed Vietnam Memorial at the Junior High. I'm going to try to contact her to see if she is able to scan photos if the library has all issues. Any suggestions from you will be helpful. Just wanted to share an interesting note. Two weeks ago my sister, Shari Notov Zimmerman '70, my brother Dan Notov '78 and me, Sandy Notov saw Billy Joel in Colorado where we all now live. Billy gave a shout out to Chuck Arnold who was in the audience!! Said he was his music teacher and Chuck always knew Billy had talent. Talk about a small world. The concert was amazing and made us all proud to have gone to HHS!!

I had three sisters so you know what I saw over the years. Actually Eileen was the only one I ever saw with curlers. Diane and Pat had straight hair and me too!!! I withdraw the above statement...both Eileen and Diane had curlers in place and I think my mom just had a perm (third photo) A little picture history below...

Beverly Schillinger Slater Hicksville in the early 60's. My brother is David Schillinger with my manager dad Gene Schillinger (in the jacket) and Charlie Casar on the other end. I recognize Russ Rosenfeld and his brother Bobby Rosenfeld in this picture. The team was sponsored by Jamaica Refrigeration. Please help me tag. — with Russ Rosenfeld and Bob Rosenfeld.

Sheila Schillinger Allegretti I think John Mazzaras (sp) tall one in front. I also remember the name Lance Dugan but not sure. Karen Hoosack Brosseau That looks like my old friends Glen Olsen, 4th from right, and Mike Melody, 2nd from right. Barbara Schoenfeld Fernandes Is that Randy Buchman bottom left?

Beverly Schillinger Slater Buchman or Buchstein?

Kenneth R Marcus Could be the Pollard twins in the top center…Larry and Jerry.

Can anyone nail down the entire roster???

********************************************************************************** Buffalo Bob Once you view the video, I'm hoping you find it interesting enough to include in a link in the Hicksville High Newsletter. I know you've been gathering information related to the Vietnam war and HHS veterans who served. This highly decorated Navy Helicopter Squadron is little known for its accomplishments. Having served in this squadron.....with its men and with its various missions.....under any circumstances.....is the reason you very seldom, if ever, see me without my Seawolves ballcap. I am proud to have served with such courageous, battle-tested comrades. The trailer link below will give you, in part, a glimpse of what a typical day might have been like. Can't wait to see the full documentary. Follow the instructions to the trailer; password: hal3 Vince Przybyzewski 1955 We hope when this film is completed, you feel loved. We hope that you feel honored and recognized. Mostly, we hope that you know that we will do our part to introduce the MOST DECORATED SQUADRON in naval history to the world and to honor the 44 Brothers that paid the ultimate price. We want to be able to share this film with our children and grandchildren down the road and would like you to be able to do the same. To view the trailer please click on the link to our website www.scrambletheseawolves.com On the front page of our site, you will find a blue and red link towards the bottom of the page. Please click on the red link and enter the password (password hal3) provided. If you have any questions, thoughts or have any difficulties feel free to let us know and we’ll get back to you ASAP! Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Dear Bob & gang at HixNews I saw my "Thank You for my Birthday Card" in the October HixNews but I was a little surprised at the picture shown with it...the one of Haley, David and Helen. Haley is our first grandchild and she just turned 16 in June so you can do the math...the picture is rather old. I thought I sent you a more recent picture but in case I didn't attach it correctly, I'll attach it here. This one was taken on Sept 12 of this year so it's about as recent as can be. Please let me know if you didn't get this one either. Many thanks… Helen Luna Carr 1963

Email Address Changes Dear Readers Please send an email update if you've changed within the past year. The past several months of attempting to send birthday and anniversary cards has been disastrous because of notification from birthday alarm that the card was not delivered to the address on file!!!.Thanks buffalo bob casale. p.s. Many of our readers have sent me the city and state they live in and with that knowledge, I can find probably 90% of readers who have changed their email address. PLEASE send me your city and state. Thank you, Bob! I have received mine for both my October 2 birthday and my wedding anniversary each year. It always makes me smile and feel more connected to my Hicksville roots. Thanks for keeping the Hicksville pride going!

Diane Harvey Anderson 1975 That's too bad about the greetings not getting through because of bad email addresses! I hope it gets straightened out easily. My e-mail is the same. BTW, I hope you are feeling better these days...nothing worse than being in pain much of the time. I am doing well after my shoulder replacement. 4 P/T appointments to go. I think I should be set for awhile after that. Take care

On Mon, 5 Oct 2015 14:32:10 -0700 I haven't changed emails in the last year and I'm still the same happy-go-lucky guy I've always been! Kent Evans Date: Thursday, October 8, 2015, 9:00 AM Thanks for the information. However, we don't have you on the master mailing list, so I'm not sure how you received my note. Please advise what class you were in and send along yours and your spouses birthday and when your anniversary is??? Please include years And let me know what state you live in. You can provide an address if you care to. buffalo bob casale p.s. I searched Classmates and it shows you were in the class of 1970 On Thu, 8 Oct 2015 14:50:02 -0700 My physical location is in Levittown, about two blocks from the Hicksville line. My wife is divorcing me so that info is moot. I graduated with the class of 1970. Ray What's-his-name, the principal, wanted to keep me from graduating with my class. Then I reminded him that that meant I'd be coming back for another year! Kent Date: Thursday, October 8, 2015, 7:40 PM Kent Thanks for the update. Sorry about the divorce. Ray Rusch was principal at the time. Was coach Howie Bowers still there in 1970??? I missed a track practice after finishing 2nd in the 100 yard dash and 3rd in the 220 yard dash at the Nassau County trials. Bowers kicked me off the track team 3 days before the Nassau Championships at Great Neck South that was held on June 4, 1960. I pleaded with Bowers who wouldn't listen. This was the same coach who would kick a guy off the football team if he saw you holding hands with a girl. My father who ran track at NYU back in 1937/38/39 was a quarter miler and his 4 x 400 relay team placed 2nd in the Penn Relays one year. Anyhow my dad called Leon J. Galloway who was principal (I think before Rusch) and suggested that perhaps the penalty for missing a practice was a little harsh. Galloway concurred and on Thursday, 2 days before the big meet, I was reinstated. Of course I practiced Thursday and did a lot of stretching and 3/4 sprints on Friday. Got to Great Neck South on Saturday and finished 4th in the counties in both the hundred and the two twenty. bob

Date: Fri, 9 Oct 2015 17:54:45 -0700 Yeah, Raymond Rusch! Your story is terrific. I'm glad it all worked out in the end. I don't know if bowers was there in 1970. I had very little contact with the coaches. but my sister, Irene, class of 1960, had leon Galloway for a teacher when she was there. Hi Bob, This is my correct email address and I always get emails from you announcing that the newsletter is ready but I have never received a birthday card ever. It's not a big deal at all but maybe you have my email wrong for the birthday card email but not for everything else. Thanks for what you do for us Hickvillians!! Mary Ann Lombardi Imgram 1973 Mary Ann I have your birthday on March 14, 1955; Rich's birthday December 12, 1954 and you and Rich being married November 14, 1981. The email address on all three is (concealed). You should have received cards. I'm at a loss. Look forward to future greetings. love yah buffalo bob Lol....it truly is ok!!! I'm just appreciative of what you have done to keep us Hicksvillians together and to keep our memories alive. I was just curious about the birthday card thing because you asked about our current emails! When is your birthday so I can send you one!! You can't send yourself one!! Mary Ann Editor Note…mine is December 3rd and I’ll be 73 and am elated to still be mobile. Bob I will remember your birthday because it's the same day as my daughters. A very good day to have a birthday. Sorry to hear you are having Heath issues. Keeping mobile is the key. Even with pain and the assistance of a walking device as long as you can move... That's important! It looks like you are living in a one story house. Hopefully that helps. Stairs are just awful when you have issues. I broke my foot 2 years ago and it was just miserable. I had a huge cast and couldn't get up the stairs for two weeks until they put me in a boot. I had to sleep on the couch and take sponge baths! Worst time of my life! We sold that house in July and are having a house built with the master

bedroom on the first floor. Wider doors, zero entry shower, etc. going to be ready to age in place when the time comes. Getting old sucks as they say but the alternative is worse! Take care of yourself and hopefully the treatments you are getting will relieve the pain and you'll feel better! Mary Ann ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Buff You can add mine as you never had it Birthday 4/16/1946 Anniversary 11/27/1969 Thanks, Howard Gilbert ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bob Have never received a card… Birthday March 22/1934 Anniversary October 8, 1989 Norm Nichols 1952 Norm I apologize but have no answer to why you are not on the birthday list or anniversary list. I went to birthday alarm where I have entered everyone on a list onto that site. You are not there so it is important that you send me the information that I can place at birthday alarm. Thanks and sorry for the oversight. Warm Regards buffalo bob Casale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hey Buff The email address you have for me works as I am replying to your request. In The News

When Trump purchased and rebuilt Mar-A-Lago, the grand mansion and estate in Palm Beach, Florida, he got into a dispute with the city fathers who are well known for being strict on zoning regulations. Trump put up a 50-foot flag pole even though 30 feet is the maximum allowed. The city imposed a $1,000 per day fine while Trump and city argued back and forth. Finally, when the fine had reached a total of $120,000 Trump proposed a solution. He would donate that amount to veteran's organizations, would move the flag to a different spot in front of the mansion, and would only use a 30 foot flag pole. The city agreed so Trump brought in the company that does his golf course construction, had them build a 20-foot high grassy hill, and put the 30-foot flag pole on top of that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

People Looking For People Bob My birthday is March 24th and email is (concealed). I tried sending an email to: [email protected] and received a failure to deliver notice. Wanted to add to looking for people list. I'm looking for Louis Trocola (57) and William Palladino ((58?). Fred Fulco 1957 On Sat, Oct 10, 2015 at 5:00 PM. Fred [email protected] is valid. Roger tried to send me something the other day at [email protected] and got a similar "failure to deliver" notice. Try again and see if it gets through. Your email is what we have on file so no change is required. I added your birthday. Will forward your request to Henry for placement in the people looking for people file. Hope you are well. Regards buffalo bob Hello, My name is Joe Glovack. I did not go to Hicksville H. S., but I am interested in contacting a woman who did graduate in 1965. I hope you can help me, if it's not too much trouble. I would really appreciate it. Her name, in HS was SUSAN SCHULTES. Her address was 58 Edward Avenue, Hicksville, NY. She is listed in the 1965 Yearbook. I would really like to have a contact with her in any way I can. I last saw her in 1972. I had recently separated from the U.S. Navy and lived in Brooklyn, NY. My phone number is 516-465-2056 and I now reside in Bethpage. My email is [email protected] Please try to help me out. I would really like to know how she is now and whatever became of her. It is so important to me, to get closure. I hope she is attending the reunion. Thank you.   Joe I don’t remember the name nor the person. Recipes

Shepherd’s Pie Twice-Baked Potatoes

Makes: 6 servings

Ingredients: 6 large russet potatoes, scrubbed 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/2 pound ground lamb (or beef) sea salt (to taste) 1/4 teaspoon celery seed 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar 1/2 cup red onions, diced 1/2 cup carrots, diced 1/4 cup radishes, diced 1/4 cup celery, chopped black pepper (to taste) 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 3 teaspoons fresh marjoram leaves, minced 2 tablespoons butter 1/2 cup whole milk

Page 39: 2015_11_HIxnews.com newsletter

Directions: 1. Position a rack in the top third of the oven and pre-heat to 400 F. 2. Poke russet potatoes all over with a fork. Carefully set potatoes directly on oven rack. Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until potatoes are easily pierced with a fork. Set potatoes aside to cool and leave oven on. 3. Meanwhile, make the filling. Add the vegetable oil to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Break the lamb (or beef) up and add it to the pan. Sprinkle generously with sea salt, as well as celery seed and garlic powder. Cook lamb until nicely browned, 6-8 minutes. Remove lamb to a bowl and turn heat to medium. 4. Add the sherry vinegar to the skillet and scrape up any brown bits. Add the onions and cook until translucent, 5 minutes. Stir in the carrots, radishes, and celery, along with a pinch each sea salt and pepper. Sauté, stirring often, for 5 minutes. Cover, turn heat to low, and cook until vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes more. Toss with Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon marjoram leaves, and set aside. 5. Slice the top third off the cooked potatoes, reserving tops. Hollow out each potato, reserving the scooped out bits of potato, to leave a 1/4-inch thick wall all around. In a large bowl, mash the scooped out potato bits with the butter and milk, until smooth. Add 1 teaspoon marjoram and plenty of sea salt and pepper, to taste. 6. Fill the hollowed out potato skins with lamb mixture and cover with a dollop of mashed potatoes. Press the potatoes down slightly and then use a spoon to create peaks and valleys on the top. Sprinkle the remaining teaspoon of marjoram leaves over potatoes. 7. Set stuffed potatoes on a rimmed baking sheet and slide into the 400 F oven. Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until filling is bubbling and the peaks of the mashed potatoes are a rich golden brown. Cool briefly; then serve.
