BELGIUM’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS fine art and antiques event promises arich diversity of objects for sale from around the world. Most schoolsof art will be represented, from medieval times to the twentieth-century.
Naturally one will expect to find Flemish paintings. A fine examplewill be The Adoration of the Magi by Adriaen van Overbeke (activein Antwerp c.1508–29) with Floris van Wanroij (Dommelen).Mullany (London) will be showing early European sculpture, including a limewood Madonna and Child from Southern Germany.Dating from c.1470–80 the pieces’s polychromy and gilding hassurvived remarkably well.
Traditional antique furniture will rub shoulders with examples oftwentieth-century design. Particularly striking will be the double-sided bureau-bookcase by Sicilian architect Ico Parisi (1916–96) withFuture Antérieur (Brussels). Fashioned from lacquered wood, Perspexand metal, this unique piece was created in 1967. BRAFA is notablefor the abundance of non-European works. There will be richpickings for collectors of tribal art, including a nineteenth-centuryreliquary figure from north-east of Gabon. This piece is fashionedfrom wood, brass and red copper and will be available with GalleryJacques Germain (Montreal). Other categories of fine and applied artswill include Asian art, antiquities, ceramics, arms and armour, textiles, photography and jewellery.
