Dear Trader, January 2015

First, well done on your decision to begin journaling your trading. You are taking real, actionable steps toward creating

consistency in your trades. In my experience as a trader and a mentor, journaling is often the difference that makes the

difference. The journal that is before you will become a tool to measure what you are doing well and to identify areas

that need attention and additional consistency. It is the yardstick against which you can measure your incremental

progress (or slippage).

Think about this for a moment: in any discipline there are masters and there are dabblers. One unique characteristic

masters of any discipline possess is their intentional focus on measurement and progress. Here it is on a bumper

sticker: Masters are measuring fanatics. Another hallmark of mastery is consistency. Whether it is throwing the ball

exactly the same way, painting a portrait with impeccable technique, or flying a stabilized landing approach, masters

are consistent. Measurement will be one of your primary tools for consistency. Your measurements will illuminate quickly

any inconsistencies with your execution, which is why most dabblers don’t want to measure! Measurement is a very real

form of personal accountability.

As you journal your trades, you will begin to discover pitfalls that need to be avoided. For example, maybe your Win-

Loss ratio drops when you attempt to trade counter market trend. Or perhaps you are consistently getting stopped out

of a trade only to watch the price hit your profit target a few days later. These discoveries will become the resource you

need to establish some personal guardrails around your trading plan. These guardrails prevent you from getting in the

way of…yourself! The truth is, most traders I encounter are excellent analysts. Their challenges are their personal blind-

spots. That is, problems with their trading plan they cannot see—problems they will not see until they become a

measuring fanatic.

Use your journal religiously. I encourage you to print the entire journal and place it in a 3-ring binder that you keep with

you wherever you are trading. Avoid the temptation to use a digital journal. There is a discernible difference between

handwriting your trades and typing them out. If you are not used to writing by hand, test my theory for a quarter and

see how your trading is impacted. I think you will be shocked at how much of a difference this little change can make.

Give yourself permission, right now, to begin fresh. There will come a time that you place a trade or two when you don’t

have your journal in front of you. The temptation will then be present to abandon the whole journaling process. Do Not.

Give yourself a mulligan and begin journaling again. Remember, journaling is a tool for you. The information collected

over the long-haul will be one of your most valuable resources as a trader.

Let’s make 2015 your best trading year yet! I will encourage you as I encourage myself: “May you be rewarded by that

which you diligently pursue and relentlessly execute.”

Blessings on your year ahead!

5 Steps to Trade Confirmation: Use this checklist to ensure consistency with

your analysis. The 5 steps are designed to give you a perspective on the

current market framework. For additional information on the 5 Steps to Trade

Confirmation and how to use it effectively, reference the course Foundations of

Stocks and Options: Level 1.

Analysis Matrix: The two most important questions when analyzing market

framework are “Where should the market be trading?” and “Where should the

market not be trading?” Traders who consistently answer these questions well

will find much greater consistency in their analysis process.

Use this printed matrix for Trade #1. If you have additional trades, use the

Notes section or the back of your journaling sheet to draw additional matrices.

For additional information on the Analysis Matrix and how to use it effectively,

reference the course Fibs in 4.

Notes: Use the notes section to track miscellaneous information. Some

elements you might consider tracking are: • General Market Trend (DJIA, SPX, NASDAQ) • Personal Events (Health, Sleep, Work, Stress, etc.) • Personal Focus: What are you working to improve this week? • Holidays (Market holidays are marked for you.) • Important Events (FOMC Meeting, OPEC Meeting, Jobs Reports, etc.) • Something Learned • Extra space for extended analysis

Holiday Warning:

• Closed at 1:00 P.M. Eastern on 12/24

4 LEVERS OF PROFITABILITY• Increase win-loss ratio. • Increase profit on winning trades. • Manage losses on losing trades. • Decrease expenses.

Journal Usage Guide

Win / Loss Ratio: Percentage of winning trades. Example: 8 out of 10 would be 80%.

Value of Winning Trades: Average ROI you generated on profitable trades. Calculate your ROI

by dividing your profit into your investment (ROI = Profit ÷ Investment). Remember to move your

decimal two places to the right to determine your %. You can average percentages by adding

each trade’s ROI and dividing by the total number of trades.

Value of Losing Trades: Average ROI you generated on losing trades (Negative ROI).

Calculate your ROI by dividing your profit into your investment (ROI = Profit ÷ Investment).

Remember to move your decimal two places to the right to determine your %. You can average

percentages by adding each trade’s ROI and dividing by the total number of trades.

Example: If you lost $10 on a $100 trade, you would determine your losing ROI as follows:

-0.1 (or -10%) = $-10 ÷ $100.

Total Gains (With Errors): Track your actual gains (or negative gains). You can track this metric

with R’s earned or Dollars Generated (or both!).

Self Inflicted Errors: Total the value of your errors caused by a deviation from your trading plan

(like failing to exit at a stop, entering after the price gapped past your stated entry target, etc.).

You should also include the value of errors as a result of deviating from your personal trading

guardrails (or “laws”). This value may be displayed in R’s or Dollars (or both!). For additional

information on self-inflicted errors, reference the course Trading Plans.

Potential Gain (Minus Errors): Place the gains you would have achieved had you simply

followed your plan or operated within your personal trading guardrails. It is your Total Gains

minus Self-Inflicted Errors. Track this using R’s or Dollars.

4 Levers of Profitability: There are only 4 “levers” that a trader can pull to adjust his/her

profitability. You should be actively working to optimize each of these four areas of your

trading. Ask yourself the question: “How might I (insert a Lever of Profitability) ?”

For additional information on the 4 Levers of Profitability, reference Trader Conditioning

Bootcamp or Total Fibonacci Trading.

# of Trades: Enter your total number of trades for the month in the Value column. No entry in the “%, $ or R” column.

Avg. Trade Amt: Enter your average trade amount in the Value column. You can enter the total trade amounts in the

right column, but it is not required. However, it will make your total ROI easier to calculate.

Wins: Enter your total number of winning trades in the Value column. Calculate the percentage in the right column.

Losses: Enter your total number of losing trades in the Value column. Calculate the percentage in the right column.

Winning ROI: Calculate your ROI for your winning trades. Enter the percentage in the Value column. Use the right

column to enter your actual dollar value or R’s.

Losing ROI: Calculate your ROI for your Losing trades. This will be a NEGATIVE number. Enter the percentage in the

Value column (negative). Use the right column to enter your actual dollar value or R’s (negative).

Commissions: Enter your commissions spent for the month. Use the Value column to enter your commissions per

trade. Use the right column to enter your total commission expenses in either dollars or R’s.

Profit: This is your total profit for the month.

ROI: This is your total ROI for the month.

% Improve: This is where you identify changes you are committing to for the month ahead. Limit yourself to making

no greater than 5% improvements or changes in each category.

Targeted Results: The chart on the right-hand side of the worksheet is where you calculate your targeted results for

the month ahead. Remember, this is meant to be a guide. If the number of trades are not available, don’t force the

trade. Use it as a target on the wall, helping you move toward more disciplined and efficient trading.
