Visitation School’s Summer Solution, which includes summer classes and summer camp, is a fun academic and enrichment program serving children from preschool through 12th grade. Enrollment is open to all. The programs meet the needs of the individual child with one-on-one, small- and large-group settings. The programs offer a friendly, relaxed and supportive environment for learning, enrichment and creativity. Your child’s imagination and intellect will be sparked! Jump Start ReadingInstruction is designed to improve word attack, passage reading, spelling, and listening skills. Hour-long sessions are provided in individual or small group settings using the Orton Gillingham approach to language arts or other appropriate multi-sensory techniques for teaching reading. Evaluations and follow-up recommendations will be available at the end of the summer session.

Jump Start MathThis is a remedial math program. Children will be instructed in small group tutorials and will work on skills in basic math computations and problem solving. Strategies will be developed and ample practice provided to improve each child’s application of the math functions. Instruction will not exceed three to a group. There will be pre-testing and post-testing for cumulative reporting and diagnostics.

Jump Start WritingInstruction is designed to strengthen or further develop writing skills using the Kansas Sentence Writing Strategy. Focus begins with simple sentences and builds strategies to formulate paragraphs. The program develops skills in capitalization, punctuation, and proper grammar for creating complete sentences. Enrollment for each group will not exceed four students. Students are grouped by age and needs assessment. Evaluations and follow-up recommendations will be mailed at the end of the summer session.

Study Skills and Test TakingClear the path to better grades. Set goals for a great start to the new school year! Study Skills and Test Taking teaches students entering grades six through nine how to get rid of the blocks to learning and get organized. Students will learn strategies for organizing materials and overcoming that ever-present procrastination hurdle, effective ways to read texts and take notes, and strategies for good test-taking skills. Take the stress and anxiety out of test taking after you learn how to understand the test questions, how to use time effectively, and how to think actively and logically.

Professional WritingThis course will provide strategies for developing a clear, concise, professional writing style. A variety of writing formats are addressed, including the business letter, the memo, the formal proposal, and the resume. Writing in an electronic environment and collaborative writing are considered. Voice, style, audience, purpose, the writing process, and strategies for editing and revision are examined in the context of interpersonal and ethical dimensions.

(Montessori-kindergarten)

Visitation’s Junior Summer Camp is for four- and five-year-old students entering Montessori Preschool (at Visitation) and Kindergarten (at any school) during the 2015-2016 school year. Three-year-old students who have already completed a year of Montessori at Visitation are also eligible. This program is open from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Junior Summer Camp participants will spend a portion of the day combined with the school-age summer campers (no more than 25% of the total day). During this time, a specific teacher is assigned to work exclusively with the Junior Summer Camp participants to ensure that their safety and capabilities are recognized. This “combination time” is a unique feature within our program that promotes the special family-feel at Visitation.

(Students entering grades 1-6)

Visitation’s Summer Camp program is for students who will be entering grades one through six during the 2015-2016 school year. The program, which is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., gives participants a fun, school-age, childcare experience by including a wide variety of camp-like activities such as large group games, art projects, outside time and free choice.

This year, eight enrichment weeks will be included in our Summer Camp curriculum. During these weeks, campers will not only have the chance to enjoy daily camp activities, but they will also have the opportunity to participate in specialized week-long enrichment classes of their own choosing (AM & full-day campers only). During these weeks, a full five-day per week commitment is required. Field trips will be planned during the non-enrichment weeks in August.

Enrichment classes are included in the Summer Camp and Junior Summer Camp curriculum and tuition. Students who register for Summer Camp are asked to select enrichment classes each week to fill the hours of 9 a.m.-noon. Enrichment classes are listed in the next section and divided by student’s age/grade in the fall of 2015.

Families who wish to register ONLY for enrichment classes may do so on an à la carte basis. Please be sure to check the course catalog for specific class dates, times, age ranges and rates. Classes are from 9-10:15 a.m., 10:45 a.m.-noon or 9 a.m.-noon, unless otherwise noted. Student schedules can include as few as one class one week or as many as two classes every week.

I Can Cook!In this class, campers learn to whip up their own yummy “mini-jar snacks.” Each day, children will get their own ingredients to mix, chop, and stir to make a do-it-yourself treat in a mini-jar. Campers will also decorate their own chef ’s hat and apron. Bon appetite! *Allergen-containing ingredients will be avoided when/if possible. Please let us know if your child has a food allergy. Irish Step Dancing for Boys and Girls Come explore Irish culture, exercise your body and have fun! On the last day of class, we will put on a mini-performance to show everyone what we learned!

Every Day is a Holiday!Campers will have the opportunity to celebrate a year’s worth of holidays in just one week! Each day, students will learn about a different holiday and its origin. Foods, crafts and traditions will be used to explore the hows and whys of these special days. The class will also learn about the traditions and customs of holidays in other countries.

International Cooking with Mrs. Van SlounLet’s turn the Chinese classroom into an international kitchen and cook up some tasty experiences for the campers! Under the guidance of Mrs. Van Sloun, campers will learn to make five dishes from scratch. In the process, campers will also learn about choosing healthy, delicious ingredients and how to present the dishes with style. Even though cooking is one of the most ordinary rituals in life, it is also one of the best and most precious ways to spend time with children and friends!

Pet Pals and Animal FriendsIf you are a friend to animals than this class is for you! Campers will do many projects and activities that revolve around animals. We will learn about different types of animals including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians. There will be a special visit by the R.A.D. Zoo on Friday with real animals! Sudsy Soap MakingCome and learn how to make homemade soaps. In this class you will learn many different soap-making processes. You’ll also have the opportunity to experiment with soaps of many colors and designs as well as different scents, too! At the conclusion of this class, you will have many different bars of soap to take home to share with others! This is a very “hands-on” class so be ready to get your hands dirty…scratch that…be ready to get your hands sudsy and clean in this creative and fun class!

Creative CrochetLet’s start simple. In this class we will be learning the basic stitches in crochet such as the chain stitch, the single crochet and the double crochet. Drawing the World Around UsThis drawing class will begin with an introduction to some basic materials and vocabulary. From there, we will work on drawing lines, shapes, and adding tone/shading. Campers will also have the opportunity to play with the materials through doodling and cartooning. Our goal throughout the week will be to learn and use basic visual language to draw from life.

Outdoor GamesThe summer is short, so let’s make the most of it! Campers will play all sorts of outdoor games during this class. Zany Papermaking with Ms. ZPapermaking is a fun and very “hands-on” art! Be ready to have fun and get a little messy! We will spend the first day of class taking a walk around the Visitation campus collecting materials for our papermaking adventure. The remainder of the class will be spent learning how to make paper pulp while also learning about the whole process of molding and drying the paper, too! After the paper is made and dried, we will bind our homemade paper into our own beautiful homemade journals! By the end of the week each student will have his or her own homemade paper journal to take home.

iPad Fun with Mrs. Joyce!In this fun and engaging class, we will use a variety of apps to learn, create, design and collaborate. We will learn while playing math, word, art, and music games. Some of the apps to be used include the following: Sock Puppets, Explain Everything, Sushi Monster, Story Creator, Physics Lite, BrainPOP, Barrel Tones and many, many more! Other non-iPad activities will be woven into the class to limit the daily dose of “screen time” (we will discuss the importance of limiting screen time as well). An iPad will be provided for this class so that all the apps will be consistent.

International Cooking with Mrs. Van SlounLet’s turn the Chinese classroom into an international kitchen and cook up some tasty experiences for the campers! Under the guidance of Mrs. Van Sloun, campers will learn to make five dishes from scratch. In the process, campers will also learn about choosing healthy, delicious ingredients and how to present the dishes with style. Even though cooking is one of the most ordinary rituals in life, it is also one of the best and most precious ways to spend time with children and friends!

Professional WritingThis course will provide strategies for developing a clear, concise, professional writing style. A variety of writing formats are addressed, including the business letter, the memo, the formal proposal, and the resume. Writing in an electronic environment and collaborative writing are considered. Voice, style, audience, purpose, the writing process, and strategies for editing and revision are examined in the context of interpersonal and ethical dimensions.

Red Cross Babysitter’s Training/CertificationBabysitter’s Training from the American Red Cross is fun and fast-paced with hands-on activities, exciting videos, role-playing and lively discussions. You will learn to be the best babysitter on the block! Plus you’ll gain the confidence to make smart decisions and stay safe in any babysitting situation. You’ll learn to supervise children and infants; perform basic child care skills such as diapering and feeding; choose safe, age-appropriate games and toys; handle bedtime and discipline issues; identify safety hazards and prevent injuries; care for common injuries and emergencies; communicate effectively with parents; and find and interview for babysitting jobs. Participants must attend the full class on all days in order to receive official Red Cross certification.

Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED CertificationThe American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program helps participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The program teaches skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. The learning objectives include what to do before giving care, checking an injured/ill person, CPR/AED training and first aid training. Participants must attend the full class on both days and participate in all activities in order to receive official Red Cross certification in first aid, CPR and AED. Certification is valid for two years from date of course completion.
