Visitors are awed by the beauty of Alleghany County and the relaxed life-style. Along our roads you are likely to spot Christmas trees, cattle farms, and spectacular views.
Produced annually by the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce, this guide offers the reader insight on what our county has to offer, whether you are coming for a visit or looking to relocate. Use it as a guide to lodging, dining, or just to learn more about our community.
Each year we spotlight artists and their talents in the magazine. This year’s featured artists are wood crafters, Dan Abernathy of A Bird in Hand, John Brady of Blue Ridge Woodcrafters, The Ulrey’s of Carolina Farm Table, and Phil Horton of Horton’s Cabinets. Woodcraft has always played an important role in Sparta and Alleghany County. Wood is plentiful and in our early history, it was valued less for its beauty and more for functionality as it was used to create utensils, furniture, cabinets and buildings in this Blue Ridge Mountain frontier culture.
Wood’s signifi cance has grown and today art and function combine as artisans meld beauty with benefi t in their creations.
Blue Ridge Woodcrafters was founded by John Brady, who retired in 2001 from 31 years in education as a school teacher and principal. It was then that he turned his woodworking hobby into a second career. He be-gan in his basement crafting his signature accessories and utensils for kitch-en and the home from strips of native woods glued into a solid piece such that each item shows the beauty of several tree species.Today, his standalone shop and studio at 593 Andrews Ridge Road, Sparta, turns out a variety of home accessories, each the color and texture of nu-merous native woods, as well as tables, benches and small furniture pieces. These larger pieces are created on an as-ordered basis. His best sellers remain some of his fi rst creations, sturdy cutting boards and lazy susans. They are as durable as they are beautiful, and customers can expect them to last a lifetime. To serve his returning customers, John is forever look-ing for new accessories to create that blend functional design and elegant form. His casserole tray is a unique solution to a long-standing challenge of how to transport hot dishes to covered-dish events without spilling one’s prize recipe.
Carolina Farm Table, formerly Designs in Wood, is a custom furniture shop which specializes in farm tables, hutches and other hand crafted pieces for the home. John and Penny Ulery began Designs In Wood in 1972 in San Diego, California. They moved to Sparta in 1980, and bought the remaining half of the old Lowe’s Hardware building next to the law enforcement center at the corner of East Doughton and Alleghany Street, where the shop still currently resides.
John and Penny have been selling at art and antique shows for the past 30 years, working with clients all over the United States, and have won numerous awards for the craftsmanship and design of
their work. Their interest in furniture these days is focused on custom pieces such as traditional fur-niture like farm tables, sideboards, and hutches. What began as a small woodworking shop that made hand carved mirrors and birdhouses, has developed into Carolina Farm Table.
Today, along with their son Devin, and a small group of talented craftsmen, they build custom furniture. Skilled in design, advertising and business, Devin has brought quite a bit to the “table.” Born and raised in Sparta, he is focused on internet sales and sees the potential for local business growth. He looks forward to what the future holds for both Carolina Farm Table, and the town of Sparta. They have a growing staff of seven, who take great pride in their work. sales and advertising for the business and together they have made it truly a family business.Carolina Farm Table is open by appointment only, as it is a true woodworking shop, but love to have visitors come and check them out. They are excited about the Sparta Studio Tour in June and October, and look forward to being part of this growing event. “From our home to yours...”
Horton's Cabinets - Phil Horton was raised by his grandparents and learned his trade working beside his grandfather Edwin Lyon. Since opening his own shop in 1990, Horton’s Cabinets has been building high-end cabinets and providing custom mill work for homes and businesses in Alleghany County as well as surrounding counties and clients in the North Carolina Piedmont.
Located at 4222 US 21 South, Sparta, the shop employs six craftsmen and one dog. His company has grown by word of mouth as the quality of the work speaks for itself. Its primary clients are architects, interior decorators and home owners.
Phil has a strong commitment to his community as well as to the quality of his work. He recently donated a pair of custom entry doors for the home of the local VFW, Post 7034. They can be viewed at 1193 U.S. 21, Sparta. They demonstrate a can-do attitude and a willingness to take on new challenges. Phil says that if you can show him a picture, he can build it!
His work has been featured in Builders/Architecture, Southern Living, Country Living and VFW, the national magazine of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
A Bird In Hand ... by Dan is the creation of local carver Dan Abernathy. In his work, he has taken woodworking to a pure art form as he creates lifelike reproductions of some of natures most delicate creatures. From age 4 when Dan thought he could put salt on the tail of snow birds and catch them, his
work has been informed by a lifelong interest and fascination with birds. What began as a hobby has became a major focus for the past 26 years. The lush woods and pastures of the mountains surrounding his shop at 292 Walnut Branch Church Road, Sparta, offer a feast of different birds to observe, photograph, study and then bring to life in wood.
His carving studies began at John C. Campbell Folk School and later un-der 3 Ward Foundation “Best In World” master carvers, as he added their specifi c techniques to his own unique style. For the past 10 years he has taught bird carving at John C. Campbell Folk School
As a past member of Southern Highlands Craft Guild and Piedmont Craftsmen, he has received many cash prizes and awards as he exhibited his work in juried art shows and museums in the Southeast. In 2002 he exhibited a bird carved explicitly for the White House Christmas Tree.
Dan’s carvings range from a six-foot, ten-inch Bald Eagle in fl ight to the smallest humming birds and everything in between, each so delicately done that you can see the coat of feathers, as if they could spring to life and take fl ight.

Murphy’s Mercantile: Find Something Unique, Take It Home
Murphy’s Mercantile was born out of a need for Christmas gifts in 2005. Chrysty Murphy had left her job to attend school and had no gifts. She wondered if she could make something. Her mother was an artist, and growing up without much was made easier by her mother’s ability to look around the home and create crafts and works of art from what was al-ready available there. So Chrysty, who is rather ‘crafty’ her-self, started looking around her own home, and found her daughter’s tights that had been put in the ‘donate’ bag. From those tights she created several snowmen! She took them to her aunt’s beauty shop, to see what her aunt thought of them, and one of the customers there asked if Chrysty sold them.
From that humble beginning, Chrysty received an order and ended up making almost 100 snowmen! She moved on from there to creating folk art dolls, more snowmen, painting on spoons, and trying other different things.
Chrysty opened the store, now located at 18 S Main Street, Sparta, in 2011 and realized quickly that the hand-made items went so fast, she needed to add other items to fi ll up the space in the store. She started by adding scarves and now at Murphy’s Mercantile you may also purchase unique ladies apparel and outerwear, ladies accessories, jewelry, handbags, and of course, lots of scarves! There are also some home décor items, and a selection of items are either locally made, North Carolina made, or made in the USA.
In Murphy’s you can purchase soap that is made right here in Sparta, by a Sparta native. You may also purchase candles made in North Carolina, and folk art made by Chrysty herself.
When asked what the most popular item in the store is, it is an easy answer. Scarves! You can even get a demonstration on how to ‘wear’ your scarf, or watch a video on their Facebook page. The next best seller would be their leggings. Wearing the leggings is self-ex-planatory, no demo needed!
Murphy’s Mercantile was recognized as the 2014 Retail Merchant of the Year at the Annual Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet. Murphy’s Mercantile is known for their friendly staff who offer personalized shopping experiences to all who enter their door. So stop by and check out the great selection, Monday-Saturday from 10 am till 5 pm. From now until Christmas, Murphy’s will be open until 6 pm on Thursdays and Fridays.
