Reflecting on Social Science with UWSUWS offers a unique range of choices in the study of social science. Many units are available in flexible modes, recognising your competing demands of study, work and family. Students are able to study units with specialist lecturers who emphasise contemporary social and professional relevance. Kiki KorpinenDeputy Director, ACT Council of Social Service Graduate Diploma in Social Science

Kiki Korpinen believes individual values need to match the values of the organisations you work with and for. ‘In other words, where we sit is where we stand,’ she says. ‘This has greatly assisted me to gain employment with organisations that I feel I have truly been able to contribute to in a holistic way.

‘I started my career journey in the community sector, focusing on women’s services and issues impacting on women in the ACT. This quickly grew to a broader interest in gender studies, which ultimately led me to enrol in the University of Western Sydney’s Graduate Diploma in Social Science, where I was able to complete a study (mini thesis) titled “Collectives, Hierarchy and Power”.

‘I chose UWS as the flexible delivery of the course was something I needed to fit in with other aspects of my life, and I had heard good things about the professors/tutors who were engaged with this particular course. As well, I was entitled to receive support in the ACT through a mentoring system provided by the CIT.

‘The combination of graduate studies and experience working within organisations has provided me with a good toolset to continue working with confidence within the broad range of issues impacting on communities.’
