THIS WEEKLMU (9-7, 0-0 WCC) will open West Coast Conference play this week when it welcomes Santa Clara (7-8, 0-0 WCC) to Page Stadium for a three-game series…the Lions are picked to win the WCC, while Santa Clara is tabbed seventh…live audio, video and stats for the series can be found at LMU-Lions.com…
LION TRACKSThe Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over #1 TCU (11-2) on Tuesday, but a five-run fifth inning put LMU in a hole it could not escape as the Lions (9-7) eventually fell by a score of 6-2…senior David Edwards paced the Lion offense with a 3-for-5 night, while Tanner Donnels, Sean Watkins and Austin Miller all chipped in two hits…Donnels posted a double and Watkins homered for the second time in as many games…sophomore Brenton Arriaga got the start and took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) over 41. Innings…
POWER SURGEThe LMU baseball program has slugged 10 home runs through 16 games this year, including six in the last three overall…the number may not stand out in the crowd amongst national leaders, but it a drastic shift in direction for the LMU program itself…the Lions hit just 10 home runs in 56 games played last year after managing only four in 51 games in 2013…the final game of a three-game series against Arkansas on 3/8 saw LMU nearly double its home run total to that point (five to nine), as LMU hit four homers in a single game for the first time since 4/21/10 at UC Riverside…David Fletcher (solo HR), David Edwards (2R HR, Sean Watkins (2R HR) and Tanner Donnels (3R HR) accounted for eight of LMU’s nine runs in a 9-0 shutout of the #20 Razorbacks…
IN A PINCHLMU has shown a strong bench so far this year when players have been called upon to contribute in a pinch…the Lions are batting .370 (10-for-27) in pinch-hit opportunities, led by junior Joe Christian (2-for-3) and freshman Jamey Smart (4-for-8)…in those 27 at bats, LMU pinch-hitters have registered a double and six RBI…
HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOTNever afraid to wear a pitch to reach first base, LMU has quickly recorded 38 hit-by-pitches over 16 games this year (2.38 per game)…the mark is second in the NCAA this week, trailing only UC Davis with 42…LMU is on pace to drawing 123 hit-by-pitches during the regular season…LMU’s existing program record is 112 in 2000…Billy Wilson has been hit sev-en times, while Joe Murray, Austin Miller, Ted Boeke, Cas-sidy Brown and Sean Watkins have all been hit four times...11 different Lions have registered at least one hit-by-pitch…the high-water mark for the year was five hit batsmen against Saint Joseph’s on 2/21 in the second game of a doubleheader, while LMU has not managed a hit-by-pitch in only two games this year (2/24 at UC Riverside | 3/1 vs. Nebraska)…the five hit-by-pitches were the most for the Lions since recording five at Cal State Fullerton on 5/18/10…
BROWN ON THE BENCHSophomore Cassidy Brown was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, it was announced by The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on March 11…75 catchers were nominated for the award, presented by BaseballSavings.com, by their coaches, but because the award is given an-nually to the top Division I collegiate catcher, the list will be updated to include other candidates until May 4…the list will then be narrowed down to the semifinalists on May 14…
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOMEIn its 33rd season as the home of Lion baseball in 2015, George C. Page Stadium also enters its second year under the lights…the 2015 LMU baseball schedule features 31 of its 52 games played at home, including 23 under the lights…the Lions are 6-4 (3-3 under lights) so far at home in 2015…LMU went 20-10 at home last year, including 13-5 under the lights...the Lions will play only one non-conference road weekend series during the regular season this year (Arkansas)…non-conference series feature games vs. San Jose State, Saint Joseph’s and Nebraska, while WCC foes Santa Clara, Gon-zaga, BYU, Pacific and USD will all visit LMU...the Lions, who have posted a 523-388-4 (.574) overall record in the park’s 32 seasons, have claimed five conference titles while calling Page Stadium home…the first Page Stadium conference title came in 1986, when the Lions posted a 24-8 record at home…the best record came in 1988, when LMU was 30-5 (.857)…
ABOUT SANTA CLARASanta Clara enters the weekend series with the Lions sport-ing a 7-8 overall record after being swept by Kansas State on the road last weekend…the Broncos have lost five of their last six games overall after winning their previous five…Aus-tin Fisher leads the team in terms of batting average at .409, while two-time WCC Player of the Week, Jose Vizcaino, Jr., is hitting .394 with 10 runs scored, six doubles, two homers and 10 RBI to the tune of a .758 slugging percentage…he has also swiped a team-high three bases…TJ Braff also owns two homers to accompany two triples as Santa Clara has hit .259 as a team…RHP Jacob Steffen (2-2, 3.51) is scheduled to make his fifth start of the season on Friday, followed by RHP Steven Wilson (1-1, 4.74) and LHP Kevin George (1-1, 2.95)…Steffens and Wilson have posted 29 and 26 strikeouts, respectively…Santa Clara is led by fourth-year head coach Dan O’Brien…
JOURNEY TO THE TOURNEYFor the third consecutive year, the WCC will hold a Cham-pionship Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. from May 21-23 to decide who will claim the WCC’s au-tomatic bid into the NCAA Tournament...the top-four teams will compete in the tournament, with the #1 seed facing #4 and #2 facing #3 in first-round play...the tournament is double elimination until the championship game on Saturday, where the winner earns the automatic bid...

THE NAME OF THE GAMEIt’s often said that pitching is the name of the game, and LMU pitchers have been pretty solid so far this season, pitching to a 3.26 team ERA…Lion hurlers have registered 117 strikeouts in 141 innings to average .83 per inning and 7.31 per game played…leading the way for the Lions is Colin Welmon (30 strikeouts)…both Welmon and Tylor Megill have registered a 10+ strikeout game this year, something that LMU did not accomplish all of last season (last: Aaron Griffin | 4/27/13 at Portland)…Welmon’s 12 strikeout game against Saint Joseph’s on 2/20 was the first for LMU since Trevor Megill struck out 12 at #18 USD on 5/12/12…Welmon is 2-2 so far this year, but his record does not reflect how well he has ac-tually pitched…he tossed six innings and allowed just one unearned run on Opening night before going seven frames and allowing only one earned run while striking out 12 in his second start – a 2-1 loss to Saint Joseph’s...the right-hander then went 7.2 innings, striking out nine and allowing just one run against Nebraska on 2/27 to record the victory in his third start, but fell to 2-2 after allowing two runs over 5.2 innings in a 2-1 loss on the road at #20 Arkansas on 3/6…making his first career start, Tylor Megill went six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out a pair in the finale against San Jose State before registering five shutout innings and 11 strikeouts to combine on LMU’s first shutout of the year on 2/21 against Saint Joseph’s…Megill started LMU’s second shutout of the year on 3/8 at #20 Arkansas, reg-istering 5.0 shutout frames…through 16 games, LMU starters have registered a 7-6 record and a 3.23 ERA with 68 strikeouts over 83.2 innings…

Jason Gill enters his seventh year at the helm of the LMU baseball program with the 2015 season. Under Gill’s guidance, LMU has accumulated 32 All-WCC selections, three Freshmen All-Americans, two WCC Defen-sive Players of the Year, an ABCA All-West Region selection, two WCC Freshmen of the Year, 19 Academic All-Conference selec-tions, an Academic All-District selection, and 17 players drafted in the MLB Draft.
Gill’s incoming class for the 2014 season was tabbed as the 34th-best in the nation accord-ing to Collegiate Baseball. LMU was just one of four non-BCS schools to make the list, and
just one of five private schools lauded. The class was also tied for the best in the West Coast Conference. The Lions finished 2014 with a 32-24 overall record (best since 2004) and a 17-10 mark in the WCC to claim second place and a spot in the WCC Championship Tournament. David Fletcher and Austin Miller earned first team Freshman All-American honors, including becoming the first duo to be tabbed in the same year by Baseball America. Fletcher also took home WCC De-fensive Player of the Year in his freshman season, keeping the award with the Lions for the second straight year.
The 2013 season saw Gill’s arsenal of talent-ed pitchers finish the year with an LMU re-cord 3.17 ERA, led by a trio of All-WCC selec-tions in right-handers Colin Welmon, Aaron Griffin and Patrick McGrath. The Lions also featured the WCC Defensive Player of the Year in Colton Plaia and honorable mention selections in David Edwards, Zac Fujimoto and Cullen Mahoney.
Gill guided his 2012 squad to a share of third place in the West Coast Conference. In a year that saw the Lions earn the 23rd spot in Base-ball America’s Top-25 recruiting classes, Gill helped his players to six All-WCC selections
at the end of the season, including freshmen Trevor Megill and Colin Welmon as staples of the class. Reaching a coaching milestone, Gill earned his 100th career victory on April 20, 2012, a 5-3 victory over Portland.
At the conclusion of the 2012 campaign, Gill spent the summer of 2012 serving as an as-sistant coach for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, helping the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal after finishing 5-2 at Honkbal Week hosted at Pim Mulier Sta-dium in the Netherlands.
Gill’s 2011 Lions posted an overall record of 20-25, the best record since 2004 to that point. The Lions, who finished tied for third in the West Coast Conference, began the year with a 7-1 record and closed the year by win-ning four of their last five games. Gill and his coaching staff also guided the LMU pitching staff to a 3.25 team ERA in 2011. The Lions placed five players on All-Conference teams, while four were taken in the MLB draft, in-cluding three in the first 12 rounds for the first time since 2005.

RANKED TEAMS
The 2010 season saw the Lions record a series sweep over perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton, including a victory over then-No. 9 Fullerton on May 18, and a series victory over Fresno State on the road. The 2010 season also culminated in the first All-American selection under Gill as a head coach, as 2010 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Matt Low-enstein was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Ping!Baseball.
LMU finished in second place in the WCC in 2009 after post-ing a 30-29 overall record and a 13-8 mark in conference play to earn a spot in the WCC Championship Series. The Lions’ 8-2 start in 2009 was the best since the 1988 season, and it was also the best start over the first 10 games for a first-year skipper in LMU program history. Gill’s 2009 squad finished the year with a 9-2 record against ranked-opponents, including recording a four-game sweep of then-defending National Champion Fresno State and a crucial three-game sweep over WCC-foe San Diego. Proving they can play with any team in Southern California, widely considered one of the toughest regions in the country, LMU also knocked-off perennial pow-erhouses, then-No. 5 UC Irvine and sixth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, in 2009. Although those victories were highlights for LMU players and fans alike, they were likely even bigger for Gill, as he coached at both programs after taking the field as a player for the Titans in 1994.
For the four years preceding his start as LMU’s seventh skip-per in program history, Gill worked under head coach George Horton at Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, serving as an in-field coach, recruiting coordinator and as a primary hitting instructor. Gill is no stranger to starting a program from the ground up, taking on the task twice, most recently at the Uni-versity of Oregon. Gill was Horton’s first hire as both men left Cal State Fullerton to begin the reconstruction of the Duck
baseball program in 2007. Always considered one of the best recruiters in college baseball, Gill’s 2007 recruiting class was ranked in the top-10 in the nation by both Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America.
In the three years preceding the move to Eugene, Ore., the Titans made it to Omaha and the College World Series twice, won two Big West Conference titles and had 35 players draft-ed. The three-year stint under Horton was Gill’s second on the Fullerton coaching staff, having started his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant for legendary skipper, and Di-vision I baseball’s all-time winningest coach, Augie Garrido. In that first term, Gill served essential roles on both the 1995 National Championship and 1996 Fullerton squads.
Before his return to Fullerton, Gill spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UC Irvine, as the coaching staff resurrected the baseball program from ex-tinction. After just three years of developing the program, Gill helped lead UCI to a NCAA Regional in 2004.
Furthering his reputation as a standout recruiter, the Anteat-ers’ 2002 recruiting class was ranked eighth in the country by Baseball America, with the following two classes among Collegiate Baseball’s top-30. Overall, Gill has served as a collegiate recruiting coordinator directly for seven years, recording six recruiting classes in the top-30 and two in the top-10 over that span.
Prior to UCI, Gill was an assistant coach at Loyola Marymount where he helped guide the Lions to their most recent WCC titles and playoff berths in 1999 and 2000. Over that two-year span, nine LMU players moved on to professional baseball. Perhaps the most successful draft year in LMU history, Gill watched six of his Lion ballplayers sign professional con-tracts in 2000, including one player in each of the first three rounds.
Coach Gill also served two years as an assistant coach at Nevada in 1997 and 1998. While there, the Wolfpack made the postseason for just the second time in school history. Serv-ing as the team’s hitting coach and working closely with the infielders, Gill guided the 1997 team to nine offensive team re-cords at Nevada. In addition, his tutelage of the infielders was instrumental in placing Nevada first in the country in double plays in both seasons.
Before embarking on his coaching career, Gill played one year at Cal State Fullerton, hitting .345, scoring 28 runs and starting 43 games at third base as a senior. That year, the All-Big West Conference infielder helped the Titans to a 47-16 overall record and a College World Series berth. Gill started his collegiate career playing two seasons at Cuesta College before playing his junior campaign at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Overall, Coach Gill has been to Omaha four times as a player and a coach. In addition, he has been to the postseason a total of nine times, coached four Conference Players of the Year, including three infielders directly under his guidance, and been a part of six Conference Championships.
A local product who prepped at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., Gill received his bachelor’s degree from Cal State Fullerton in kinesiology in 1996. Gill, who was born on April 7, 1970, lives with his wife, Kacey, and his son, Shane.
