Charles A. Weyerhaeuser and Richard

“Drew” Musser, the “Pine Tree Bachelors”,

came to Little Falls, Minnesota in 1891 at

ages 25 and 26 respectively. Together they

managed the Pine Tree Lumber Company,

which was founded in 1890 by their fathers,

lumber magnates Frederick Weyerhaeuser

and Peter Musser. This lumber company

was significant to Minnesota’s statewide

history of the logging industry for two

reasons; it represented the Weyerhaeuser

empire’s expansion into Minnesota, as

well as, serving as the principle sawmill of

the Weyerhaeusers for many years. By the

summer of 1893, 600 men were employed

at Pine Tree’s two mills, not including

crews working in the woods and on log

drives. By the time it closed in 1920, Pine

Tree Lumber Co. had sawed over 1.5 billion

feet of lumber and boosted Little Falls’

population by several thousand people.

The neighboring residences of Charles

LINDEN HILL MANSIONS

A. Weyerhaeuser and Richard “Drew”

Musser at Linden Hill are a direct physical

expression of the lumbering era in

Minnesota. The houses occupy a nine

acre wooded site along the Mississippi

River and lie at the top of a small bluff

overlooking the river, with beautifully

landscaped lawns and gardens. Designed

by Clarence H. Johnston, at one time the

most significant architectural figure in

Minnesota, the houses were built in the

shingle style, constructed simultaneously

in 1898 by local builder A.D. Harrison.

The Pine Tree Lumber Company Office,

located at 735 1st Street NE, and the

Weyerhaeuser and Musser homes are on

the National Register of Historic Places.

While the City of Little Falls owns the

property of ‘Linden Hill’, the Friends of

Linden Hill, a non-profit group of community

volunteers, lease it and make the decisions

about how it is best to preserve and use

the property. The FOLH board has decided

to use the Weyerhaeuser home to house

the Linden Hill Museum. Here they tell the

stories of the Weyerhaeuser and Musser

families who built and lived their lives in

these houses, as well as the story of the

Pine Tree Lumber Co., and what life was

like in the early 1900’s.

C ross Rocks

The legend of “fairy crosses” have come down through history from the first meeting of John Smith and Pocahontas, which states that the Indian Princess gave John Smith a good luck charm necklace made out of a “fairy cross”. It’s also known that President Theodore Roosevelt carried an amulet made from a “fairy cross”.

The Staurolites, better known as “fairy stones” are found at Blanchard Dam. Take Hilton Road (approximately 8.6 miles) to 68th Street (take path at the Dead End road). These “Fairy” or “Lucky” stones are twinned staurolite crystals simulating the Roman, Maltese and St. Andrew’s crosses. They are as much as an inch in length and are of dark brown color. The original staurolite mineral has changed to a compact softer material, so that the stones can be readily pared for jewelry trade.

In 1931, the Lindbergh family gave the entire 110 acres and summer

house to the State of Minnesota in recognition of the elder Charles

A. Lindbergh’s life and accomplishments. In 1969, the house and 17

adjacent acres were placed under the management of the Minnesota

Historical Society to preserve and interpret the Lindbergh story. Today,

visitors can see the 1906 house with original artifacts throughout and see

Charles A. Lindbergh’s evolution from an ordinary boy to environmentalist.

Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 flight from New York to Paris launched an

aviation revolution and making Lindbergh one of the most famous

American’s in the 20th Century. Charles A. Lindbergh’s childhood

experiences shaped the lasting legacy he would create through his work

in the 20th century. The Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site is a National

Historic Landmark featuring the fully furnished boyhood home of the

famous aviator, visitor center exhibits, including a “Spirit of St. Louis”

flight simulator, and an interpretive trail along the river.

R ipley Esker

An esker is a landform built of sand and gravel deposited by a melt water stream that flowed beneath a glacier. The Ripley esker is a classic esker; it stands 3 to 18 meters above the surrounding plain, and is about 68 to 76 meters wide. Although the Ripley esker is broken into several segments, it has an overall length of about 11 kilometers.

The narrow, sinuous, steep-sided ridge of sand and gravel that forms the esker is flanked on both sides by a

row of small lakes and depressions. A vigorous sub glacial stream eroded a channel bed initially wide enough to contain those flanking depressions. The ice that surrounded the stream was under pressure from the glacier’s weight. When the stream’s flow diminished, the ice squeezed inward to form a narrower tunnel. The smaller, slower stream in the smaller ice tunnel could not carry as much sediment, and it began to deposit it on the streambed. As the sediments accumulated, they raised the level

of the streambed and along with it the stream, which continually melted the ice above it and kept an open passage. This narrow, raised streambed grew to a height that became the ridge one sees today above the surrounding plain.

The Ripley esker was formed beneath a tongue-shaped lobe of ice called the Superior lobe, which flowed into this area from the northeast about 20,000 to 15,000 years ago.

The Minnesota Military Museum will be

unveiling two new exhibits in 2015 thanks

to the generosity of supporters.

MINNESOTA MILITARY MUSEUM

On July 18th, the museum will have a grand

opening of an exhibit commemorating

the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam

War. The exhibit will feature stories of

the Minnesotan’s who were involved in

Vietnam, from the end of WWII when a

Minnesota member of an OSS Operational

Team parachuted into Hanoi, to the son

of a Vietnamese officer who as a 9 year

old was evacuated by helicopter from

our embassy in 1975 and now teaches

in Minnesota. The exhibit will focus on

more than just combat and will portray

the stories of the mechanics, cooks, clerks,

logisticians and other support troops from

all branches.

The museum will also have a renovated

“Women in the Military” exhibit. Once

completed the exhibit will house a complete

display of women’s uniforms representing

all branches of the service from WWI to the

present. Along with intrepretive information

on the uniforms and the evolution and

involvement of women in each branch of

the armed services.
