Letter from the Mayor

As the mayor of Irmo, I would like to give an official “Hello, and Welcome to

Irmo.” But much more than that, I personally want to welcome you, not just to

the Town of Irmo, but to the Greater Irmo area.

Whether you decide to rest your head in Ballentine, White Rock, Hilton,

Dutch Fork, St. Andrews, Seven Oaks, Coldstream, Bush River Road, Highway 6

or in the greatest little Southern town itself, Irmo, S.C., you are going to love

that you did.

I moved here from North Carolina, by way of Alabama, and my wife is from

the Finger Lakes Area of New York State. We love that we have raised our kids

here in Irmo, S.C. We have great schools, with one of the, if not the, best school

districts in the state. We have top-ranked elementary, middle and high schools.

Irmo has grown over the years and our business community has been a

tremendous part of that growth. With an abundance of local shops and offices,

Irmo has everything to conveniently meet your needs. There are great shopping

areas along Lake Murray Boulevard, St. Andrews Road and Broad River Road,

among others. Health care services, gyms and yoga studios, home repair and

automotive services are readily available.

That’s just a start. Here are some of our very spe-cial events and places:

Okra Strut: The Lexington Medical Center Irmo Okra Strut has provided family fun for the Town of Irmo and neighboring counties for 42 years. In 1974, the Lake Murray/Irmo Woman’s Club created an an-nual fundraiser to build a new community library.

Now a nationally known event, the “Strut” keeps the traditions of street fairs of old. Nestled into its new permanent home in the Community Park of

Irmo, the Okra Strut features a street dance, parade, arts and crafts, rides and amusements, petting zoo, and lots of festival food.

Held in the fall, the event kicks off on Friday eve-ning with the street dance and Okra Eating Contest. On Saturday morning, the second largest parade in South Carolina leads off with floats and entries from around the state. Amusements and rides provide hours of entertainment while vendors ply their wares.

Columbiana Centre: While the area in and around Irmo has changed substantially since 1990, one constant is the presence of one of the most dy-namic shopping centers in the state. As Columbiana Centre celebrates its 25th anniversary, it’s easy to get caught up in nostalgia but also important to look ahead.

Midlands Technical College offers programs and pro-ductions that provide entertainment, education and opportunity to professionals, learners and communi-ty members.

The 400-seat, state-of-the-art facility is best known for its Signature Series, a lineup of profession-al touring companies representing the country’s best in music, dance, theatre, comedy and more. Famous names such as Mavis Staples, The Second City, Kathleen Madigan, Pilobolus, and The Texas Tenors regularly hit the stage. The series also includes Pops performances by the South Carolina Philharmonic.

The theater is also recognized for the HT@MTC Performance Incubator, which enables professional performers residing in the Midlands to create sus-tainable careers through the production of new work suitable for touring.

Just 11 miles from downtown Columbia, Saluda Shoals Park is a 400-acre natural preserve on the banks of the lower Saluda River. The park offers hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, a splash pad and a dog park.

Community Park: Irmo opened its new Community Park in late 2013. The park, home to the Okra Strut,

is a great place for families to enjoy the outdoors. It features an amphitheater, two playgrounds and a nature trail on 14 acres. Located on Eastview Road, it is the town’s second park.

Education

Excellence in academics is the district’s main focus. District 5 consistently receives an “A” rating under the federal accountability system and an “Excellent” rating on the state report card. Despite tougher standards, district schools continue to be recognized as Palmetto Gold and Silver award winners for academic perfor-mance and closing the achievement gap.

District 5 students are state leaders on both the SAT and ACT examinations. This is especially significant because the district is a leader in the percentage of students who take these examinations. Graduating

classes earn millions in academic and athletic scholar-ship offers annually, and the district boasts individual student accomplishments with many Carolina Scholars and National Merit Scholars each year. In March 2015, one district high school was awarded the prestigious Palmetto’s Finest Award as the top high school in the state.

District 5’s athletic programs continue to shine with state championships in several sports, and its students earn top prizes in band, chorus and the performing arts. The district also offers unique programs and education-al opportunities. As an example, the district received a $100,000 federal Farm to School grant to provide ed-ucational opportunities for students and teachers and incorporate more local foods into district cafeterias. strated their community service by donating more than $700,000 in contributions and volunteer hours to community charitable causes.

District 5 takes pride in being a school system “Where Every Choice is a Great Choice.” Choice offer-ings have been expanded with the help of a $10.3 million federal magnet schools grant, and families can choose from most schools in the district regardless of school zone. This approach helps ensure each that each student can find the learning environment that best fits his or her needs and gives the best opportunity for success.

Making improvements to school facilities is a constant, and major renovations have reshaped the campuses at all district high schools. A new middle school opens in 2015 in Chapin as the final project funded by the 2008 bond referendum. A five-year

technology plan has included major improvements to the technology infrastructure, district-issued iPad minis for all high school students, Chromebooks for all middle school students and plans for one-to-one computing for elementary school students.

Higher educationTwo institutions of higher learning are convenient to

the Irmo area. Midlands Technical College, with a cam-pus in the Harbison area, offers a number of technical training, certification programs and associate degrees that prepare people for the workforce. Many students opt to attend MTC to take their core academic classes and then transfer to a four-year institution to complete their Bachelor’s degree.

The University of South Carolina’s flagship campus is located in Columbia, offering 324 degree programs through its 14 degree-granting colleges and schools.

Health Care

Irmo’s medical and health care needs are well served by two award-winning hospital systems in the Midlands: Lexington Medi-

cal Center and Palmetto Health.

Lexington Medical Center, a 414-bed hospital in West Columbia, is the anchor of a comprehen-sive medical network that includes six community medical centers throughout the county and a staff of 6,000 health care professionals. The network includes comprehensive cardiovascular and oncology care affiliated with Duke Medicine, an occupational health center, the largest skilled nursing facility in the Caro-linas and approximately 60 physician practices.

Lexington Medical Center delivers more babies than any other hospital in the Midlands. It performs more than 21,000 surgeries each year and operates the busiest Emergency Department in S.C., treating more than 105,000 patients each year.

The hospital’s comprehensive cardiovascular

program affiliated with Duke Medicine has exceeded expectations. When the hospital began perform-ing open heart surgery in 2012, it expected to do about 100 procedures each year. In three years, the hospital has performed more than 700 open heart surgeries. Lexington Medical Center offers tran-scatheter aortic valve replacement, known as TAVR. This state-of-the-art cardiovascular technology allows doctors to replace the aortic valve without open heart surgery. The cardiology team also offers a non-surgical, electrophysiology procedure to treat cardiac arrhythmias.

Lexington Medical Center offers a multidisci-plinary approach to cancer treatment. Each week, doctors from all specialties related to cancer meet to discuss the treatment plan for each newly diag-nosed patient.

Baptist Parkridge, a 76-bed full-service com-munity hospital with 24/7 emergency care, serves the residents of Irmo, Harbison, Dutch Fork and surrounding areas. The hospital provides high-qual-ity, state-of-the-art inpatient, medical, surgical and emergency care, along with greater access to primary care physicians and specialists. It includes inpatient units, an intensive care unit, a labor and delivery unit and a newborn nursery, six operat-ing rooms, and diagnostic and treatment services including laboratory, imaging and more.

Irmo Police Department

Irmo Police Department is an accredited agency of 24 officers serving a community of about 11,000 people.

By South Carolina standards, the Irmo Police Department is a medium to large agency. The department offers several different programs to keep the lines of communication open between the department and the community. Officers are on patrol 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Irmo Police Department participates in the nationwide E911 program and emergency services are available by dialing 911.

The Irmo Police Department sponsors a Law En-forcement Explorer post through the Boy Scouts of America. This program allows young people between ages 13 and 19 with an interest in being a police officer to learn about law enforcement from officers within the department. Members of the post receive instruction in different areas of police work and then compete against other posts in South Carolina. The post adviser is Sgt. Andrea Grinstead and she can be

reached at 803-781-8088.Also offered by the Irmo Police Department is a

program for our senior citizens called Serving Our Se-niors (SOS). We offer educational programs through-out the year about avoiding scams, crime prevention and weather preparedness. We also contact program participants if we have advanced notice of inclement weather. If you would like to participate in the SOS program, contact the department at 803-781-8088.

Finally, we offer house checks for citizens who are away on vacation, fingerprinting services to citizens who are required to have their fingerprints taken for occupational reasons (teachers, stock brokers) and child safety seat inspections. All of these services are free to community members who live in the town limits. To arrange any of those services, call the department at 803-781-8088.

Irmo Fire Department

As well as life safety, one of our main missions is to maintain the quality of life that our citizens have come to expect. The mission is met through such programs as public fire education for children and the elderly, child seat safety, smoke detector installa-tions and meeting with neighborhood associations.

About Irmo Fire District: The Irmo Fire District was founded in 1963. It covers an area of about 28 square miles primarily in Lexington County. All of the Town of Irmo is in the fire district. From the town limits, the district follows the county line down Interstate 26 to the Saluda River. From there it follows the river to Lake Murray; from the Lake Murray Dam, it follows

the shores of the lake to the Richland County line and then follows the county line back to the town limits.

The Northlake Station is the primary station for the north end of the district. This area includes the Town of Irmo, parts of Quail Valley, Murraywood and Coldstream, and all of the lake area. The Headquar-ters Station covers the rest of Quail Valley, Murray-wood and Coldstream and extends down Bush River and St. Andrews Roads to the interstate, county line or the river.

The Town of Irmo has expanded to include areas of Broad River Road that extend to Bickley Road. Also included are property in the Dreher Shoals/Farming Creek/Muskrat Road area.

Recreation

Creating community through people, parks, and programs – the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC) has been offering quality indoor and outdoor recreation programs, youth and adult athletics, en-vironmental education, senior services, cultural art programming and FUN for more than 40 years.

Built in 1973 and located at 200 Leisure Lane in the St. Andrews area, Seven Oaks Park (SOP) is a full-service recreation complex offering fitness, ath-letics, and instructional and cultural arts programs to the Irmo community. Seven Oaks Park’s special events, recreation programs and volunteer oppor-tunities are designed for youth, adults, seniors and persons with special needs.

Seven Oaks Park offers visitors amenities such as a 40,000 square-foot facility with two full gym-nasiums, fitness area, dance studio, art studio, art

gallery, meeting rooms and a senior center. Crooked Creek Park is a state-of-the-art recre-

ation complex that opened in 1994 to serve the Chapin area of the Irmo Chapin Recreation District. The park quickly became an integral part of the Chapin community and serves as a recreational and social hub for Chapin residents.

Crooked Creek Park offers a wide variety of recre-ational, cultural, instructional and social activities, and hosts visitors of all ages throughout the day.

Saluda Shoals Park, opened in 1999, is a popular regional park, which welcomed more than 567,000 visitors last year and more than 4.5 million since opening. It is the second most visited attraction in the Midlands.

Coming in fall 2015, Saluda Shoals Park will celebrate the opening of a six-field soccer complex, restroom and concession pavilion, 10-court tennis fa-cility, and a second entrance and connecting roadway to the currently developed portion of the park.
