Overview

Outplacement/Career Transition services have been around for decades.

To the casual observer it would appear that not much has changed over the decades. In the past, Outplacement delivery consisted of a range of expected services:

– Coaching

– Webinars

– Online and Hard Copy Library Access

While these services still provide the foundation of outplacement service delivery there are a number of new innovations that have been introduced to make the candidate experience more successful and the organization’s investment more productive.

This e-book will cover the innovations that are now being seen in the outplacement space.

Customization

One of the better innovations now taking place in outplacement is the customizable program development.

Now candidates can build a program that will address their specific needs rather than have to accept the same package of services that every other candidate receives.

A menu-based list of delivery options is the best tool available to help candidates build their ideal program. An example of this menu based approach is on the next page.

Virtualization

In the past outplacement firms occupied large office spaces that allowed their candidates a place to work, access to job search reference materials via hard copy libraries and computers for internet access and an office setting for them to work. Today candidates want to operate primarily from their remote home office and have the option to personally connect with their career consultant on the frequency that works best for them. They can now get the best of both world’s – personal attention, no commute, and, great resources on demand. The best practice programs take all of this into consideration when they develop program options for their candidates.

InPlacement /Redeployment

InPlacement is a program where organizations provide career coaching services to the designated employees in advance of their termination notice so that they are able to move into a new opportunity quicker. InPlacement can be used to help coach candidates for either internal or external roles. The program helps the impacted candidates thru their transition period quicker resulting in: • Lower unemployment insurance cost due to shorter

transition periods. • Lower outplacement costs due to employees being better

prepared to interview for internal job opportunities . • Shorter transition periods for candidates.

Team Coaching

A new approach seen today with best practice outplacement firms is team coaching. Rather than have one coach handle all of the candidates needs you now see a team of experts that handle all of the key deliverables:

• Resume/interview training

• LinkedIn profile development and strategy

• Marketing

Smart outplacement firms see the benefit of specialization and have talented teams in place that can best help the candidate achieve their desired outcomes

Expanded Use of Assessment Tools

In the past the standard assessment that was provided to outplacement candidates was the MBTI (Myers Briggs) which provided insights into personality profiles and working style. It was helpful back then and it is still helpful today. Smart outplacement firms though have greatly expanded their toolbox to offer their candidates a broader array of assessments to help better address their specific needs. Some of the more popular assessments used are: DISC Birkman Strong Interest Inventory Strength Finders

Analytics

You cannot manage what you cannot measure. Best practice outplacement firms have all embraced robust back end systems that track, measure and report al of the key candidate analytics to the organizational sponsor.

Firms can now accurately measure:

• Time from transition to landing

• Candidate activity/level of engagement

• Effectiveness of program options.

Summary

There are a number of innovations taking place in the world of outplacement. These changes are providing:

• Organizations with a greater return on their investment via shorter transition times for their impacted employees and more affordable delivery options.

• Candidates with a deeper and richer experience that provides them with the most current tools needed to successfully launch and land in today’s job market.
