As I reflect on the past years as an officer of the School

Nutrition Association, I am pleased with how we have

stayed strong as we have encountered “A World of

Change”. It is encouraging to see the excitement and enthusiasm

of new members who aspire to see our association relevant and

viable for the next generation of school nutrition professionals

As members of this great association, please share encourag-

ing news about our organization with non-members to get them

excited about becoming members. The more members we have,

there are more voices that can be heard by our legislators and

allied organizations.

It is important that our local chapters get affiliated at the

beginning of the school year and commit to having local meetings.

Our members are encouraged to attend their district meetings,

the annual state conference, the ANC, the LAC, and any other

association events that are offered, along with inviting your

non-member co-workers to join you.

The nutrition of our children continues to be

front and center in the mind-

set of parents because of the

emphasis from our profession,

Congress, the White House

and social media. Parents

want to be informed about

the food their children are

eating. I encourage you all to

embrace the “World of

Changes” and allow ourselves

to be our biggest, loudest

and most advocating champion for School Nutrition.

Sincerely,

Brittany Benge

Greetings Distinguished Members of School Nutrition Association of North Carolina! It is truly an honor and privilege to welcome you as a part of this vital organization, as we launch together one of the most significant campaigns for nutrition and wellness throughout the world and in our own state! The pin you receive is a symbol of your important participation in an organization of dedicated people, who provide nourishment and positive influence for the young people of our state and nation. As you wear it with pride and confidence, you are making a statement that you make a difference. Our young people are the future! You are helping mold the future generation! Not only do you provide nutritious meals, you are often the front line impacting their emotional, ethical and moral development. Our organization is here to help you and others as we journey together into A World of Change. WE make positive changes happen! Together we grow as an organization and individually. The larger and more involved the members of the organization, the more impact we can make on those who can assist in the endeavor – through legislation - State and Federal as well as local leaders. There is power in numbers.

Sincerely,

Brittany Benge, SNA-NC President 2014 - 2015

As I reflect on this past year, I

am grateful for the opportunity

to have served as your president

of SNA-NC during the 2013-2014 year.

I will always carry with me the memories

of smiling and exhilarating faces as they

were honored during District Meetings

as Champions of SNA-NC for having

at least 25 years of service to our great

association. I will always maintain the

memories of Craig Thompson, my

speaker during the year, as he talked

about only seeing the tip of the iceberg

when you come into contact with peo-

ple, and the Death Crawl, which chal-

lenged our members to never give up,

but always press forward in the face of

difficult obstacles.

As president this past year, I had the

awesome opportunity to visit multiple

areas of this great state as I traveled to

district meetings. My travels carried me

to Raleigh, Lincolnton, Richlands,

Plymouth, Bladenboro, Mocksville,

Hendersonville, and finally to King,

North Carolina. Each setting was

beautiful and unique, and the excitement

and commitment of our association

members was never more evident.

I would like to thank

this association and executive

board for the great support

that I have received this past

year. That support was

needed as the many issues

impacting our industry became

front page news, and as leaders

of our association, we became

the advocates and voices for

our industry. Although more

than 24 of us had represented

our state at the Legislative Action Con-

ference in March in Washington, DC,

eight North Carolina Association Mem-

bers traveled back to Washington in

April to meet with our United States

Senators and a US House Representative.

As School Nutrition issues became the

headline for various media outlets, I am

very proud of our leadership that voiced

the concerns of our directors across the

state, and provided our representatives

with numerous documentation to

support our efforts to scale back some

of the impeding regulations that could

adversely affect our programs.

The completion of any year of

service would not be possible without the support of the

Executive Board and our Steering Committee that plans and

executes our state conference. Again this year, with the leader-

ship and direction of our new president, Brittany Benge,

Christina Dodd and the Steering Committee, a great conference

was achieved. Once again, we were blessed with great pre-

conference sessions, a spectacular food show, innovative and

informative educational mini sessions, and a fun and exciting

banquet. I would like to thank NCDA and NC-DPI, and the

numerous vendors who support our annual conference. In

speaking with the numerous association members who traveled

to Greensboro for the conference, I heard over and over again

about how much they enjoyed the conference, and how proud

they were to be parts of this great association.

Boston, Massachusetts was the site of our Annual SNA

Conference this past July. More than 140 North Carolina

Association members represented our state at the conference.

As president of SNA-NC, I was honored with the Thelma B.

Flanagan Gold Award of Service in recognition

of outstanding accomplishments through the

association’s Plan of Action. The School

Nutrition Association of North Carolina also

received the Increasing Membership Award for

2013-2014 and the Credentialing 3% Gold

Award. In addition to these awards, a picture,

with the eight representatives who traveled to

Washington in April, was featured on the SNA

PAC presentation during the conference.

Additionally, I was selected to be a candidate

for the Southeast Regional Director’s position

for the Executive Board of SNA. It is a

tremendous honor to be nominated.

Finally, this was a year of transition for me.

I began the year as a supervisor for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg

School District. I will always be grateful for the support and

encouragement that I received from the Director, Cindy Hobbs,

and the rest of the great team at CMS. I then transitioned to a

new position as a Regional Consultant with the North Carolina

Department of Public Instruction. Although I knew that

serving as SNA president and beginning a new job simultaneously

would be challenging, I am awed by the very strong support that

I received from my new team at NC-DPI. I salute Dr. Lynn

Harvey and the team at NC-DPI who allowed me to serve our

state as president while growing into a new position. I would

like to thank my wife Tina, and my family who supported me

throughout my travels this past year.

This has been a wonderful year. I have developed friends

and associates for life. I am eternally grateful. Thank you

for this most precious opportunity that you have given me.

I will always be thankful for the “Champions” who make our

association great.

SNA-NC Plan of Action

for Local Chapters 2014-2015

SNA-NC Mission Statement: SNA-NC advocates for the health, well-being and academic success of students by

educating stakeholders and empowering members.

SNA-NC Vision Statement: Well-nourished students ready to learn.

“School Nutrition:

A World of Change”While developing the Plan of Work for the 2014-2015 school years, I

wanted to continue implementing our strategic plan. The board has

approved the plan, but a plan is only as good as the workers who embrace

it. I need your support and efforts to make this plan successful. We need all

directors in the state of North Carolina as members of our association. We have a

5% membership growth target for this coming year.

Pillar I – Education and Professional Development: It is imperative that we network with new directors by

identifying them, marketing membership to them, and providing them with an opportunity to connect with our

association. This is a continuation of a 2013-2014 strategy. We have to use retired directors and supervisors as a

resource to educate our new directors on the benefits of association membership, and also to serve as mentors to

them. We will keep the new directors informed about the latest legislative issues impacting our profession.

Pillar II – Advocacy and Public Image: We must lobby our local, state, and national representatives to become

strong advocates for Child Nutrition and our association. During the upcoming year, we will invite those

representatives to our cafeterias and district meetings. We will take pictures with them, so that they will not only

know who we are, but are knowledgeable of our issues and concerns. Along with, we need help in identifying all of

the SNA-NC potential allied organizations.

Pillar III – Community: SNA-NC is not on an island alone. As an association, we must encourage collaboration

with our members, state affiliates, industry and allied groups. We also want to encourage more participation in the

new streamlined award program and the revamped Star Club.

Pillar IV – Membership: We want to identify new ways of working with our industry partners to not only become

members of our association, but strengthen our organization. We want to increase membership through enthusiastic

recruitment of non-members, and continue to encourage District Owned Memberships. These strategies will only

work if we retain our current members.

Pillar V – Infrastructure: SNA-NC will follow a financially sustainable funding model be reviewing and

designing a orientation for the board and new members to streamline the operation of our organization. We will

continue to recruit new candidates for leadership opportunities within our organization through the Future Leaders

program.

informative lesson on identity theft by Carol Young fromthe Attorney General’s Office. Carol shared with ussome valuable information on how to protect yourselffrom predators trying to steal your identity. Along withtips to protect yourself, she also gave us information onwho to contact if your identity has been stolen. After ashort break, Craig Thompson was introduced as ourmain guest speaker. His presentation was enjoyed byall in attendance. Craig spoke to us about how we viewourselves, others and teamwork. Reginald then took ashort survey about fruits and vegetables. District VIII Meeting –april 26, 2014By Stac i Hoxit , Pas t Dist r i ct VIII Dir e ctor

On April 26, 2014, we held our District VIII meetingat the Mills River Academy in the beautiful mountains ofWestern North Carolina. The day was started withbreakfast and registration at 8 am. Several members ofHenderson County’s SNA read some really beautifulquotes from U.S. Olympic Athletes, followed by greetingsand updates by our state President, Reggie Ross.

We watched a very informative knife skills demon-stration by B. Burgin Ross, MS, RD, LDN from UNCG.It was interactive, and we all got to practice sharpening, and then chopping and cutting some veggies. Which ledus right in to the fruit and veggie talk by Reggie.Fortunately we had a local vendor there, (Allan Hendersonfrom Henderson’s Best Fresh Cuts) with sample fruitsand veggies to share with all of us… and he was very

thankful that he was able to hear some of the suggestionsfrom SNA members about fruits and vegetables, andwhat the students are interested in.

We thoroughly enjoyed the speaker, Craig Thompson.Of course, everyone couldn’t wait until the break andphoto op, so they could have a picture made with theNFL player. He had wonderful, motivational things to say,and he made most of us laugh… and cry.

Edwin Reid, with Griffin Marketing did a smalldemonstration with some new Cambro items. He alsodonated a full shelving unit, and an induction burner. Each county present had the chance to win one or thesegifts. Buncombe County won the burner, and HendersonCounty won the shelving unit.

A special thank you to Regina Price, Penny Fine,Greg Frey, and Torie Combs for donating all of the foodfor our breakfast, and taco bar for lunch. There was somuch food, and we appreciate all that you do! Thank youto everyone who participated, and to all of the vendorsfor your donations. Everyone left with a bag full ofgoodies, and some took away really awesome door prizes.

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools celebrated NSBW with a variety of activities beginning with the January 27,2014 Chapter meeting. The members made “clocks” to inform their students what “time” school breakfast isserved. Information was printed on the published menu. Bulletin boards, posters and decorations in the cafeterias

announced that National School Breakfast Week was here. Informative e-mails to school staffs and morning announcementskept the focus on the importance of taking time for school breakfast. Across the district, the students were engaged withactivity sheets, art projects, lucky trays, lucky seats, prizes and give-away items. To encourage her students at Red OakElementary School to eat breakfast, CN manager Pam Kennedy gave out tickets to the students at lunch time to drop intoa box at breakfast the next morning. After breakfast on Friday she had a drawing for several prizes.

a Few Words (and numbers) on Professional Development and lifelong learning JoAnne Robinet t , MSA, SNS

Okay. I’ve been making those kids take vegetables whether they want to or not. I have been telling them that thebrown bread is really good. I have been taking temperatures and writing them down until I am out of ink andtime… And now, someone is telling me that I need to go to class to learn how to do what I have been doing

for YEARS??? Give me a break, pleeeeaaasssee!

I guess the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act had a part in it called “professional standards”. And now, someone iswriting up what THEY think I need to know. I was done with going to school years ago. I see no reason to do this - youknow what they say about the old dog, don’t you? I am like that dog - just too old to learn new tricks. Could takingclasses actually make a difference? Sitting in class is for kids! What do you think I could possibly accomplish at this age?

MaYBE something. look at what these people did:- J.K.Rowling was 30 years old when she finished the first manuscript for Harry Potter.- Amelia Earhart was 31 when she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.- Oprah was 32 when she started her talk show.- Edmund Hillary was 33 when he became the first man to reach Mount Everest. - Martin Luther King, Jr. was 34 When he gave the speech “I Have a Dream”.- Marie Curie was 35 years old when she got nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics.- The Wright brothers, Orville (32) & Wilbur (36) when they invented & built the world's first successful airplane. - At age 37 Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield, considered to be his greatest work.- Neil Armstrong was 38 when he became the first man to set foot on the moon.- At 39 Charles Goodyear discovered vulcanization and led the way to the effective use of rubber.- Mark Twain was 40 when he wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and 49 for Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.- Christopher Columbus was 41 when he discovered the Americas.- Rosa Parks was 42 when she refused to obey bus driver’s order to give up her seat. It is the middle of summer andnew regulations to the HHFKAare here. We are working through

“Smart Snacks”, the extra fruit offer-ing at breakfast and phase one of thesodium limits. If I left one out, I amsure USDA will let me know. As westart school and work through thechallenges, know the Executive Boardand PP&L Committee are talkingwith our legislators. After returningfrom LAC, I reached out to SenatorKay Hagan and within four days Dr.Lynn Harvey and I were meeting withher Regional Liaison Carrie Cook atCollinswood Elementary in Charlotte.Carrie was able to spend time with

students and received open andhonest comments about school meals.Carrie also noticed how much wasbeing consumed and how much wasbeing thrown away. We discussed ourIssue Paper with her.

During the meeting she told usthat Senator Hagan meets with herconstituents every Wednesday for a“Carolina Coffee” (coffee and KrispyKreme donuts). As Dr. Harvey’s eyeslit up, I knew I would be packingsoon. Within two weeks our delega-tion (Dr. Harvey, Janet Johnson, Marilyn Moody, Pam Smith, CindyMarion, Brittany Benge, Reggie Rossand I) were off to DC to meet withSenator Hagan. Cathy Schuchart andEddie Ayoob, our Lobbyists, joinedus. We were able to meet with SenatorHagan where we expressed our concerns and asked for her help. We

also met with one of heraides for over an hoursharing our stories andconcerns and letting himsample the 100% wholegrain products we areswitching to this summer. We also spent time with

aides from Senator Burr’s and Repre-sentative Price’s offices. We cameaway with the feeling that they reallylistened and paid attention. We needto keep letting our elected officialsknow the challenges that we are goingthrough. Reauthorization will be herenext year. We are giving input andhope they are listening and that flexi-bility will come in time.

Back on the home front inRaleigh, after a long drawn out battle, budgets were passed and we endedup with a bit of an increase. Pleaseremember to exercise your right tovote this November. There are severalkey elections; Senator Hagan will haveone of the toughest fights to keep herseat in the Senate as she takes onThom Tillis. The House seat thatMel Watt held is also open. There willbe regional seats open in the Houseand Senate here in North Carolina. I

encourage you to get to know thecandidates and their position on theissues that affect us all. Don’t forgetSNA’s Cafeteria Site Visit Sweep-stakes. The 2014 SNA-NC Annual Conference held June16-20, at the Koury Convention Center inGreensboro, NC, was a conference filled with

exciting speakers and events. Reginald Ross, our president,

provided the conference with the Olympic theme. Fromthe Olympic theme decorations at the banquet, to theaward winners, it was an impressive closing ceremony.

On Monday the SNA-NC Executive Board met, along with the pre-conference sessions, whichwere very well attended. The pre-conferencesessions continued on Tuesday. I was veryfortunate to conduct the Chapter LeadershipClass. This was a most enjoyable session aschapter leaders from throughout the state, enthusiastically joined in conversations andasked questions about ways to make theirchapters successful. This class serves as a toolto motivate those in leadership roles to planand become involved in building membershipsin their local chapters.

Tuesday is also Culinary and Creative ArtsDay. Association members from throughout theState, who enter our culinary competition, preparetheir best dishes to see if they are among the bestin the state. Our SNA-NC judges review eachentry, and winners are announced in all categories.

An overall winner is also given to the best entry. While the judges debated who would take homeprizes, all of the participants who had entries in theCulinary Contest, feasted on great food prepared intheir honor at the President’s Reception to HonorCulinary & Creative Arts participants.

The Wellness Walk for Hunger, sponsored thisyear by Schwan’s Food Service, Inc., and led byKim Jarman, kicked off our Wednesday session. The walk was an opportunity for our members toexercise and also serve the community by donating

canned goods for the food bank. Following the Wellness Walk for Hunger, the ribbon

was cut and the 2014 New Horizons Trade Show openedto Directors and Supervisors. Later that morning, the

awards and ScholarshipsBy Reginald A. Ross, Awards/Nomination Chair

Each year, SNA honors members of our associationwho have demonstrated outstanding performancesin many respective fields. Unfortunately, there are

times when no one is nominated in some of the categories. As I traveled this state and visited the many districts in ourassociation, I have heard the testimonials and experiencedthe performances of our members who have exceeded thestandards of some of the available awards. Honor thoseoutstanding performances by nominating them for an SNAAward. Official forms and rules can be found on ourSNA-NC website, www.schoolnutrition-nc.org.

For Employees: School nutrition employees (non-managers) may be nominated by colleagues for the Employeeof the Year Award . This award recognizes individuals whohave great customer service skills, creativity, dedication toprofessional growth, and a deep commitment to the childrenthey serve. The Employee of the Year Award recognizesnon-managerial school nutrition employees for the contribu-tions they have made throughout their school nutrition career.

For Managers: The Manage r o f the Year Award, inHonor of Louise Sublette, recognizes school nutritionmanagers for the contributions they have made throughouttheir school nutrition career. This award also recognizesmanagers who create an inviting cafeteria environment, provide leadership, training and mentoring to staff, and isinvolved in SNA, the school and community? This awardis in honor of Louise Sublette, a leader in SNA in Tennesseefor 43 years. She believed the success of school nutritiondepends upon the professionals who work in the programs.

For Directors: The Dir ect or o f the Year Awardrecognizes school nutrition directors for the contributionsthey have made throughout their school nutrition career. This award also recognizes school nutrition directors whohave enhanced the school nutrition program, providedleadership, training and mentoring to staff, and are involvedin SNA, the school and community?

The Mar y Long Beas le y Award is a special award givento North Carolina members. It is in honor of Mary LongBeasley, who had a lifelong commitment to children andSNA of North Carolina. This award is given by her familyevery year to members at various levels of our professionwho deserve to be honored for their distinguished service.

The Tim Gr eene Scholarship Award is given to anoutstanding member of our association who is active inlegislative activities locally or on the state level. SNA-NC haspartnered with Paramount Marketing Group to provide thisoutstanding award. Each year, this recipient receives fundsto attend the National SNA Legislative Conference inWashington, DC. Tim Greene was a very strong advocate ofLAC, and this award is named in his honor.

Our newest state award is The Martha Gomer Spi ri tAward, given to an energetic supervisor. This award honorsMartha’s love for SNA and School Nutrition. Pleasenominate an outstanding supervisor in your district thatexemplifies the qualities of Martha Gomer, who as asupervisor and associate of SNA-NC demonstrated astrong devotion to her profession and SNA.

The School Nutrition Association of North Carol ina

also awards scholarships of $500.00 to two individuals whoare continuing their education in a food service relateddegreed program. Official forms are on the SNA-NCwebsite. Scholarships to continue association member’seducation in our profession are a wonderful benefit givento members.

SNA-NC Par tner in Educat ion Award is designed torecognize outstanding professional performance throughcontinuing service and leadership in nutrition education atthe local level. Outstanding performance of integratingnutrition education activities in both the cafeteria and class-room are recognized. Entries may be made by any individualwho is a current member of the School Nutrition Associationof North Carolina.

Finally, the SNA Awards Program has been revamped tomake it easier to be recognized for the amazing work schoolnutrition professionals do every day. The Award Names are:SNA Employee o f the Year, SNA Manager o f the Year, and SNA Dir ect or o f the Year .
