  • ALLYSON PIERCEDESIGN PORTFOLIO

  • My roots stem from Pierre, South Dakota, where great faces and great places truly exist. I have a strong sense of pride coming from the Midwest because it teaches one the value of respect, responsibility and hard work. Standards in which I continue to hold myself to. My passion for architecture and design derives from the notion that one is truly never done learning. The world if full of infinite knowldedge. I have a passion to continue challenging my critical thinking and strengthening my abilities. Design is never over nor is the responsibility of a designer to continue striving for more.

  • 1Nido (Italian) N.A RETREAT OR PLACE OF HABITUAL RESORT.

The translation for Nido in italian means Nest. The concept of nest is then futher translated into a retreat or place of habitual resort. The Nido Winery design was charged by the goal of creating a place of rest for its occupants. The Nido Winery consists of three parts: one being a lodge, second the convention center, and finally the winery itself. The design process for this project started with a site analysis to determine the schematic layout and placement of the vineyard and its architectural pieces. The site is located west of the city center of Lincoln, Nebraska. As one approaches the site a strong emphasis on progression and reveals was put into play, which led the winery to be positioned centrally on the site. The notion was to cause intrigue and anticipation by using land formation and vegetation to obscure and reveal views of the winery as one approaches. The form of the winery is a play off the topographic contours upon which the winery sits and the orientation of the winery as a whole is based off viewpoints for its occupants. This project was completed in collaboration with two colleagues Matthew Elsom and Alec Saline.

The project was to investigate design solutions for The University of Nebraska Health center. The design goal was to be functional, flexible, and aesthetically pleasing. The site is located on the southeast end of UNL City Campus. The site strategy was to create a space that is open for student use while supplying pleasant views for the UHC occupants. The design also pursued a connection for students to the public park east, Antelope Valley. Temporary parking is placed to the north for commuters traveling from UNL East Campus. The form of the health center is based around an atrium space that acts like a spine of circulation while continuing the idea of connection to Antelope Valley. From the atrium all program is accessible minimizing issues with way-finding. The notion of the spine/atrium was to avoid creating a sterile feel within the clinic. The design also incorporated a proposed healthy cafe and lecture rooms for future nutrition classes, the goal was to propose ideas to increase student use of the facility. This project was in collaboration with, Jamie Lewis (Interior Design)

Work CollaboratePerform The St. Louiss arts district is located along the corridor of Grand Avenue north of St. Louis University. With close adjacencies to the university the design focuses on re-imagining the area into a work, perform, and collaborate function. The new master plan pushes densification of program to optimize use and re-designs traffic flow to support better pedestrian travel. The goal is to create a district that is utilized at all times of the day. The scope of the design project proper is developing the block at Grand Ave and Washington Ave intersection. Program includes an architecture firm, two leasable office buildings, one mid-income residential building, and one low income residential building. Art and design may have many ways of representation but ideas are best derived from collaboration. The first level plaza strives to revitalize the area implementing retail, eatery, and commercial space. The placement of the buildings provides areas for public seating and small impromptu performance space. A plaza to support the arts. The collaboration level ties together the office buildings and the two residential buildings providing interdisciplinary interaction that allows the occupants to expand their knowledge and resources.

Interlace (In-ter-lace) v. - to cross one another typically passing alternately over and under.

The Ducati San Francisco Office consisted of office space, showrooms for products, residential units, and lease space. The site is located on the corner of Market Street and Stockton Street in the San Francisco commercial district. The notion of interlace was implemented in the placement of the showrooms. The showroom interflaces theentire office to highlight the pride of Ducatis achievements. The showrooms display a mix of Ducati product, merchandise, and the companys history. The design strategy utilizes an open floor plan for efficiency due to the highly constricted footprint of the site. The structural system is largely made up of a steel and decking system with a structural circulation core running the entire north facade. The comfort of the occupants is controlled by a UFAD system that runs to either mechanical room located on the roof or in the basement. Another layer of design was added into the project to answer how does the building perform? The solution to this question was answered by utilizing a rainwater harvesting system coupled with solar shading louver which runs along each level of the structure.

TRADITION + MODERN Three views is a residential design that focuses on the combination of traditional Chinese architecture ideals and modern practices. The site of Three Views is located in Chongqing China along the Yangtze River. The design area is a zone taken from a larger master plan that was created in conjuncture with Chinese students, familiar with the site. The notion of the design was to draw from the traditional Chinese courtyard. A design were the idea of community and social interactions occurs internally. The three views are created by a public plaza to the Southwest, a interior courtyard formed from the mass, and a public garden to the Southeast. Through these spaces one progresses through the site. The buildings then create tiers of structure that frame the circulation path. Each buildingrespects the notion of feng shui, reflected in the entries throughout the design, no entry remains as a single straight line as it is believed that evil spirits travel along straight lines. The construction and materiality follows that of Chinese practices utilizing concrete as its main construction. Natural ventilation occurs through the use of open air corridors due to no HVAC system in the design. These corridors also are placed to provide views out to landscape surrounding. This project was done in collaboration with Matthew Elsom and Alec Saline
