Welcome to our “Genetic Progress” production sale! Thank you to our repeat customers for your confidence in our program.

It has been a challenging year for us. In December, we lost our partner and our best friend “Dad”. Our operation still has the same great cows it had before but they miss the guy that kept them fed.

As you look through our catalog, you will see the extent of our embryo transplant program. There are only three animals in the whole sale that are not affected by our ET program. We continue to intensify our ET work to bring commercial customers the best genetics we can produce in multiple packages. It allows us to perpetuate our female genetics a lot quicker. As a result, our commercial and purebred customers can take advantage of these genetic pack-ages in the form of bulls and a few select females.

As we have done in the past, we will continue to provide performance and carcass information to assist you in making your purchase decisions. Not only do we feel it is important to you, we use this information to select our replacement females and to identify any potential herd sires to use in our herd.

CALVINg EASE DIRECT (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

bIRTh WEIghT (bW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

WEANINg WEIghT (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

yEARLINg WEIghT (yW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

MILk (MILk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

TOTAL MATERNAL (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompany-ing accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + 1⁄2 WW EPD.

CALVINg EASE MATERNAL (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line be-cause it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

yIELD gRADE (yg): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

CARCASS WEIghT (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

RIbEyE AREA (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

MARbLINg (Mb): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

FEEDER PROFIT INDEx (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for fPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

EFFICIENCy PROFIT INDEx (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less.

The bulls selling as a result of ET all have genomic EPDs listed in the sale book to increase the accuracy. ET calves do not have ratios for birth and performance weights as they are raised by a recipient cow that will not give you the true accuracy for birth and performance as will the genetics. The birth weight in ET calves is completely irrelevant and has no indication as to the expected birth weights of their calves. Please use the EPDs for calving ease and birth weight to help with the selection of the bulls in the sale offering.

Unlike the past few years, we have a few more PB bulls to offer. We have tried to incorporate the strengths of the Balancer cattle into our PB popu-lation. We are satisfied that we are making progress, but we haven’t reached our objective yet. I think this calf is a good indication of that. He excels at a lot of strengths that Gelbvieh are good at plus our carcass profiles continue to improve which should go along ways to keeping all of you producing industry relevant cattle. He is deep, he is wide, and he has a great disposition. Here again, this is one of those calves that ranks very high for calving ease and birth weight epd’s but his actual birth weight might detour a few people to use him that way. We showed Lot 9 in Denver this year and he stood second in class to the National Champion Bull. If you evaluate these bulls from an industry perspective, they have a very balanced set of EPDs plus the car-cass merit offers value. The Tiara cow was purchased in the National Sale in 2010 from Eagle Pass Ranch for $16,000 and she is a beautiful female with a very nice teat and udder package. It’s amazing how long and the number of matings it takes to produce the cattle you want with the desired outcome. This bull is a good example of a plan coming together. His carcass profile is about as good as anyone will find in the Gelbvieh breed and he backs that up with performance EPD’s in the top 10% of the breed. The feeder Profit Index and the Efficiency Index indicate this calf has a strong probability of siring very profitable cattle for the new owner. Two very good donor cows (886H and P495) represented in this pedigree. He has a TENDERNESS score of a 9! This is a very good herdbull candidate. He will be used in our ET program.

LOTS 18-19 - FuLL ET bROThERSThese two calves are brothers to the B415 bull. just like him, they are very stocky and thick. As I said earlier, we rarely flush heifers but in this case, I thought the carcass value that z133 offered was worth the chance. As you can see, these two calves offer you an excellent opportunity to make genetic improvements or sire a set of feeder calves that will excel on both quality and yield grade.

Heifer bull! This bull is a little smaller framed so if you are trying to down-size your replacements or if you have heifers that you are breeding…this calf will work great! There are several calves in the sale out of zula z133 with this being her first natural calf. I very seldom take embryos out of a heifer but I thought enough of this cow that I wanted to give it a try. If you have a chance to look at the calves, she stamps all of them with a moderate frame and lots of red meat. Look at the carcass merit on this calf. He scored a 9 for tenderness!

I wish I had more Regis calves to look at. He is deep, wide and thick. He ranks in the top 3% for calving ease and the top 10% for BW…as I said earlier, do not judge this calf on his 90# birth weight if you are wondering about using him on heifers or small cows. He will work and you won’t be disappointed. He is an ET calf, and he may have come out of a very large cow so you can’t read a whole lot into the actual birth weight number…it’s just a number. Calving ease EPD is a much better indicator of what this calf will do.

The more Lock & Load calves I see, the more I like the bull. The dam to these two calves was sold to Eagle Pass in the National Sale. She is an extremely attractive package offering herd building carcass values. These two bulls exhibit both qualities. They rank in the top 30% for feeder Profit Index and the top 15% for Efficiency Profit Index. Do your homework here, you have two Bal-ancer animals with very similar EPD’s for both carcass and performance, there should be some good consistency bred into this mating.

LOTS 36-39 - FuLL ET bROThERSWe were looking for a sire to complement our PB donor cows to improve carcass and moderate birth EPD’s. Samurai has not disappointed us. All of these bulls exhibit good muscle and good growth. Look at the balance between calving ease, maternal and growth. If you are producing feeder cattle and retaining a few heifers every year, these bulls provide a good package for that.

Someone is going to get a really good buy on this dark red calf because most of you will discount him due to his WW. But, he took care of himself for most of the summer. His moma died in the pasture in late june and had he had a moma to raise him, I’m guessing this calf would have weaned easily in the 700# range. This calf will do a lot of good things for whoever owns him. He scores in the top 50% in 11 different categories…we only measure 13. We have several Samurai calves in the sale out of this mating…this happens to be her natural calf.
