Welcome to the first edition of Limerick Sports Partnership’s newsletter. In this issue we report on a variety of programmes that took place during 2014 following our very successful merger in January together with information on our calendar of events for 2015. The LSP was officially launched by Mr. John Treacy, CEO of the Irish Sports Council in May 2014. Since the amalgamation of both County Limerick and Limerick City Sports Partnerships the LSP have had direct contact with over 23,000 participants through targeted programmes with key groups namely; disadvantaged youths, Older Adults, Travellers, People with Disabilities, Young People, Schools, Teenage Girls and Wom- en. Programmes include New Year New Start, Go for Life Games, Schools Marathon Challenge, Community Health & Wellness, Men on the Move, Wheelchair Hurling, Halliwick, Mother of all Tag and Kids Run for Fun, to name but a few!!!! One of the key success of the LSP is our ability to work in partnership with a number of agencies so that programmes and projects can be developed further and can be- come more sustainable. This is very evident in the case of pro- jects developed with the Local Authority, West Limerick Re- sources, Limerick & Clare ETB, UL, HSE, Mid West Regional Drug & Alcohol Forum, Foroige, Limer- ick Childcare Committee, Sports Groups and the Disability Sector. Our new website was also launched www.limercksports.ie This is a one stop shop for all the physical activity opportunities and education and training courses taking place in Limerick. Welcome to Limerick Sports Partnership
The LSP awarded 56 clubs with development grants in the range of €500 to €1000. Clubs
were invited to a cheque presentation
evening where Mr. John Treacy, CEO of
the Irish Sports Council presented
cheques to the successful clubs togeth-
er with officially launching the newly
merged “Limerick Sports Partnership”.
Speaking ahead of his visit to UL, Mr. Treacy described the amalgamation of the Sports Partnerships as a "significant step towards developing a unified approach to increasing partici-pation in sport in every community across Limerick". He added: "Limerick has a proud sport-ing reputation but it is essential that every effort is made to ensure all sections of society are provided with opportunities to engage in recreational activities and to participate in sport. The City and County Sports Partnerships have over the years helped to increase participation levels throughout Limer-ick, and I have no doubt that the pooling of their resources and expertise will deliver divi-dends for the people of Limerick in years to come."
Over the past few years many women in Moyross, Southill and Garryowen have de-veloped a love affair with sport and physical activity. They have become women who no longer hide away from trying a new sport but instead embrace any opportunity that comes their way.
Over the past year the women involved in the ‘Mother of all Tag’ programme have continued to recruit new players to join their tag rugby team. They have increased their training times from once a week to twice a week and many have gained coaching qualifications to ensure that they are capable of leading worth-while and productive training sessions. While the programme was titled the ‘Mother of all Tag’ many of the participants involved have engaged in additional activities such as circuit training, aerobics, insanity workouts and group fitness classes. Through group support and motivation the women set up walk/ jog groups and trained up to 5 days a week in preparation for the Great Limerick Run 10km challenge. Over 15 women success-fully completed the 10km and in doing so
collected sponsorship for a number of extremely worthy caus-es. Through sport and physical activity the women of Moyross, Southill and Garryowen have formed strong relationships and friendships and continue to encourage their teammates and friends to challenge themselves to get involved in physical ac-tivity and try new fun and exciting activities. This programme is open to women of all ages and abilities, if you would like to get involved please contact Tracy on [email protected]
“The biggest move you can make is to get off the couch.... I found
once I got started nothing could stop me, all I wanted to do was do
One of the LSP’s main aims is to provide Education and Training opportunities for sports

The Sports Partnership also deliver Sports First Aid courses e.g. FETAC Level 5 (3 day course), Refresher
FETAC Level 5 (one day) and a one day Sports First Aid Course.
As part of our Club CPD, we will be running a Seminar Series in 2015. Topics have yet to be confirmed

Community Health & Wellness The Community Health & Wellness seminar was developed to educate and encourage positive health and wellness throughout the community. The information seminar explains the benefits and importance of healthy eating and regular physical activity. The presentation is 90minutes in du-ration and provides people with the knowledge and information on topics such as what foods to eat, foods to avoid, food labels, types of physical activity and how much physical activity to engage in on a weekly basis for general health.
The Seminar includes practical elements on how some fitness aids can assist in getting you active and also a visual display of the fat and sugar
content in everyday foods. The seminars are very informative and help educate people on how to make healthy choices. If you think your school, community or club would be interested in availing of this seminar please contact Elaine at [email protected]
