aLL-FreshMaN teaM T.J. Nichting was the lone member of the Niners to recieve any postseason award being selected to Conference USA’s All-Freshman team last year. Nichting tied for the team-lead hitting .283 in his rookie campaign posting team-highs in hits (56), at-bats (198), doubles (13), triples (2) and total bases (76).
draFt cLass oF 2014 Ryan Butler and Brock Hudgens are the latest in a long list of Niner Baseball alums to begin professional careers at the next level. Butler was a 7th Round draft pick, 207th overall, by the San Diego Padres. Hudgens later became the 75th player out of Charlotte taken in the draft going to the Milwaukee Brewers in the 31st Round. Butler made five appearances at short-season (A) Eugene before being pro-moted to low-A Fort Wayne posting a 1-1 record, 0.83 ERA and 10 saves over 18 appearances. Hudgens was equally impressive going 3-1 with a 1.17 ERA and a save during 11 appearances with the Arizona League (Rookie) Brewers.
douBLe-diGit hits Charlotte knocked out a 2014 season-high of 17 hits with a season-high 12 runs during a 12-4 victory over Wake For-est on April 23rd. That eclipsed the previous high of 16 hits in an 11-1 C-USA win at Florida Atlantic on April 13th. Char-lotte had double-digit hits in 20 games last season and were 12-7-1 in those contests.
haLL oF FaMe FaMiLy Charlotte sophomore Zach Jarrett comes from a Hall of Fame family background as father Dale and grandfather Ned are both enshrined in the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Dale, the 1999 NASCAR champ and three-time winner of the Day-tona 500 was enshrined in 2014 in the Hall’s fifth-ever class. Dale is still very active in broadcasting NASCAR events on the ESPN family of networks. Ned, inducted in 2011 as the Hall’s second class, is a two-time NASCAR champion going out in style after capturing the 1966 championship before going into his broadcasting career.
a FaMiLy aFFair, part oNe (oh, Brother...) Charlotte redshirt senior catcher Pat Raley will be playing along side his younger brother Danny (redshirt freshman), giving Charlotte its seventh set of brothers to play for the program. The Raleys are the fourth pair of brothers to play on the same team, which includes two pairs of identical twins. In addition to Jason and Kevin Hill playing for Charlotte to-gether in 1998, a third Hill brother,Travis, joined the 49ers in 2002, while Jason was an assistant coach with the team at that time. Other brothers to play for the Niners, but not together, are Brion (1998-00) and Zach (2001-04) Treadway, Rob (2008-09) and Jim (2010) Lyerly, and Spencer (2004-07) and Ross (2008-12) Steedley.
a FaMiLy aFFair part two (Like Father, Like soN) Starting in 1979, Charlotte baseball is now old enough to have legacy players, including the second in program history to don Niner Green last season. Brandon Vogler begins his 2nd season with the 49ers. His father, Mark, led the first-ever team in batting average, hits, RBI and home runs.
