A male Townsendʼs Warbler Philomath Oregon. I saw this one during a Christmas bird count. It was the first one I had the chance to get a good photo of, since theyʼre so flitty and active.

A Chestnut-backed Chickadee in Harlan Oregon. These birds are closely related to the black-capped chickadee and look quite similar but for their chestnut back and side coloring. In California, only their backs have the chestnut coloring.

A male Purple Finch in Harlan Oregon. This one was the first purple finch of the year; he came with his mate and was followed by many others.

A male Wilsonʼs Warbler in Harlan Oregon. This warbler is one of many that show up in our garden every year. He was the first to taste a ripe blueberry.

A fledgling male American Kestrel Corvallis Oregon, This was one of three birds that I was lucky enough to see fledge before all three drowned in a water trough when they couldnʼt get out. The owner is going to drown-proof the tank so we hope to see another family next year.

A female Belted Kingfisher in Harlan Oregon. Most belted kingfishers are shy and scare very easily, but this female sat long enough on a branch for me to take several decent photos of it.

A male Western Tanager in Harlan Oregon.This particular tanager showed up at our suet feeder in the summer of 2014. It was very obliging, and sat next to the window while we took multiple photos of it.

A male Barn Owl in Philomath Oregon. The barn is next to where we get our milk. The farmer says he see it almost every day. And the owls deliver mice to him in the form of neat little pellets.

THANKSGIVING GOOSE: A Tundra bean Goose (a very rare asian bird) with five Canada Geese in Nestucca bay Oregon.This is only the fifth recorded time that an accidental of this species has shown up in the lower 48 and Canada (we didnʼt eat it, but it was the highlight of our thanksgiving day.)

A Common Loon in Newport Oregon. This bird is non-breeding plumage. Most photos of loons show more dramatic, black and white breeding plumage. Youʼll note that the eye is still red.
