CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

Hello and Welcome to our special guests, visitors, and friends of Hallam Community Learning Centre for our 2016 Annual General Meeting. Today is a special day as we are also celebrating our 30th Anniversary and the grand opening of our new building. On behalf of the Committee, staff and members I would like to say a big thank you to Casey for their confidence in us and the massive investment that will help us to continue serving our community for many years to come. Although 2015 was again a busy year we would still like to see more people attending some of our programs and activities of interest for example: Computer classes, Digital Camera classes, Tuesdays Charity Knitters and the Thursday Nibble & Natter group. The people that we do get always enjoy themselves so please pass the word around with family and friends. One of the highlights for 2015 was again the Annual NH Cluster Dinner which is organised by the managers of the 12 Casey Houses to get together and celebrate the work of their boards and committees. We held 4 major fundraising events - our 6th Annual Trivia Night, a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, Market Day and a Master’s Sausage Sizzle which were very successful. In my role as chairperson I have gained a lot with the help of some committee members and our Manager Dianne Wilson who is there for everyone. We also celebrated Dianne’s 60th birthday with a Surprise Party which was a great success and we almost made it without her guessing something was up. There are a lot of people to say thank you to. I won’t name them all but would like to especially acknowledge Dave our handyman for the help to everyone in 2015, he is always around ready and willing to tackle whatever is needed of him, and thankyou also to Douglas Black for his help with various activities especially our Trivia Night. Lastly, Thank you to our Committee of Governance for another great year, it is rewarding to be part of a great community and to have support from the staff and volunteers when needed.

Beryl Smith - Chairperson

2015 Annual Report 9

Good afternoon everyone, it’s nice to see so many here to help us celebrate our 30th Anniversary. I hope you have all had a chance to look through the Auditors report, and everything is satisfactory. 2015 was a very busy year for the centre and of course with more activity comes higher expenses; the following is a brief summary of the day to day running of the centre. Our total Income for the year was $226,820.00 This includes Grants of:

$60,283 Department of Education & Early Childhood Development. $53,182 Department of Health & Human Services $29,666 City of Casey $47,948 Classes and other activities. Our fundraising did very well with a total of $8,019 raised over the year and expenses were only $1,960 giving us an overall profit of $6,059 which is quite impressive. These figures don’t include Rent, Miscellaneous, Memberships, Interest etc. Our total Expenses for the year were: $224,427.00 This includes: $174,961 for Wages & Superannuation, which equates to 77% of our Expenses. Assets Purchased with a Grant from ACFE for student support of $5000 included 2 Laptops, a Laser Printer, and an Electronic Whiteboard. The most notable increases for the year were: Gas & electricity up $948, Insurance up due to a staff accident (ambulance etc.) and Phone & Internet up $919. The overall outcome for the year was a profit of $2393 which isn’t a huge amount but at least shows we are doing something right. NOTE: Casey N’Hood House Cluster: HCLC acts as Treasurer for the Cluster funds so these figures shouldn’t be read as part of our own financials. Dianne Black – Treasurer.

MANAGER’S REPORT.

Yet another year has come and gone and here I am once again looking back at the events, highlights and challenges of the past year... As in the past the beginning of 2015 was full of surprises! Looking back over the year it had its ups and downs just like the previous 2 years the saddest being Dianne Black losing her brother. I reached 2 milestones: the 10th anniversary in my position as Manager (17 years with the centre) and celebrating my 60th Birthday. The Committee and Staff threw me a surprise party at work with special guests from Casey and the Cluster NH’s. It has also been a year of change and extra workload for everyone having to empty cupboards,

move our offices and get the centre empty so it could have a full facelift.

Meetings to discuss the renovations started in Feb with Casey and continued through until the work went out for tender to construction companies. The builders actually started on November 5th by which time Ingrid and I were all set up in the computer room out back to do business as usual (albeit under rather difficult circumstances) until we closed on Dec 15th.

We hired a new Children’s Services Co-ordinator, Ainslie Thomson, who came back to us after having 7 years off to have her family of 3 girls. Unlike 2014, which saw a fairly slow start, the kids groups were almost full before we knew what was happening which meant that Ainslie & Karen had to hit the floor running instead of being able to ease into a new year and get to know each other. Luckily for them (and us) they got on like a house on fire from day one.

Fundraisers for 2015 included the usual Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, Raffles, Trivia Night, Masters SS and I thank everyone who helped out for their contributions. I will add here that we have decided not to do Masters again as the amount of work by a lot of people is not worth the small amount we gain from it. Other events for the year included Info sessions on: Dementia, Diabetes & Arthritis. We held a Market Day (the first for a number of years), attended the Casey Kids Carnival, Doveton Show, hosted a number of morning teas for various causes, and needless to say I attended lots of meetings. We continued delivering off site this year... our Dari Literacy classes at Hampton Park have been so popular we were able to get extra funding and run 4 classes instead of 2 plus we started running Conversation Plus at Balla Balla although it hasn’t been quite as successful. Unlike other years all of our groups were near capacity very early on which has meant a very busy year for our staff and we were happy to include all of the usual activities again like Keeping it Together and Tuning into Kids who help families in our community that are struggling with life and children. Minor Equipment Grant – we were lucky enough again to get a grant from Casey and this year replaced 4 of the trestle tables that the Quilting & Folk Art classes use. We also got an equipment grant from ACFE which allowed us to purchase an Electronic Whiteboard, Laser Printer and 2 Laptops.

The Red Cross still use our centre as their headquarters and also celebrate their Birthday with us each year. Our Thursday morning “Nibble & Natter” group continued to support Sids & Kids, Biggest Morning Tea & Juvenile Diabetes. AND a new group came into being – The Hallam Charity Knitters which is a group of avid knitters who are supporting ‘kogo’ plus other local churches and nursing homes and has also brought a number of new faces to our centre.

2015 was again filled with meetings, forums, grant submissions & accountabilities and looking ahead it is clear that things will only get busier as we move forward into new areas.

I want to say thank you to the Staff for doing such a wonderful job, the reputation we have with our community is thanks to their high standard of work, and to the Committee and Volunteers for their ongoing support. Without all of you HCLC wouldn’t be able to offer the wonderful range of activities we do to our local and surrounding communities.

And last but not least I need to acknowledge our funding bodies, Department of Health & Human Services (coordination program funding), City of Casey (coordination funding and operational grant) & Department of Education & Early Childhood Development (incorporating ACFE- Pre accredited Adult education funding). As well as funding to help keep the doors open and offer our programs to the community they all offer information, support and training which helps make everything we do at Hallam CLC possible and affordable for our community.

CHILDREN’S SERVICES REPORT.

Good afternoon everyone and thank you all for coming, to say that 2015 was a big year in the playroom would be an understatement. Personally for me it was a huge and exciting step coming home to Hallam Community Learning Centre after being away for over 7 years raising my family. Stepping into the Coordinators role is something I had always wanted to do and I feel very privileged to have taken the role on from two amazing educators like Jane and Sherilyn. They were certainly big shoes to fill. I’d like to thank Karen my co educator who is an asset to our centre. She goes above and beyond her duties at HCLC. Karen contributes insight, understanding, care and above all fun into our playroom and our program. I would also like to thank Sree who is our faithful volunteer. Sree is always ready to help and offer her time to us, our families and our programs. The time that Sree volunteers allows for more one on one time with the children and more opportunities within our program to extend on in depth and involved small group activities. In 2015 our groups started with good numbers with Monday and Tuesday pre kinder groups almost full and Wednesday at half full. Many of these children had commenced attendance half way through the previous year and settled in well to start off a busy and fun year. We followed the children’s interest throughout the year and on adventures we did go. From camping in our outback tent to travelling around the world, to all the countries of origin of our families. We cooked and painted, we created and we got messy. Most of all we had fun while extending on the skills the children already had and encouraged emerging and new developments. We hatched chickens this year and from the 10 eggs that went into the incubator we had 7 hatch. The children were excited to be able to hear and see the chicks chirping from inside the eggs and see the eggs moving before they hatched. Our Wednesday pre kinder group was lucky enough to be in session when one of the chicks hatched. We thank Avia (a carer for one of our families) for organizing the fertilised eggs for us. Because we were able to purchase a large enclosure earlier in the year we were able to have the chicks with us and watch them grow for 5 weeks before they went off to their new homes. We thank Barbara and another pre kinder family for giving our chicks new homes. The playroom was a hive of activity with many visitors throughout the year including Parents participating on our roster, students on placement, volunteers, Tanya our Maternal and Child health nurse and Kim Reynolds from Casey dropping off resources to borrow. Keeping It Together and Tuning into Kids were regular room hirers and while the parents attended the classes we offered child care for their children. In 2014 $810 was raised through the toy catalogue fundraising, which was a great achievement. In 2015 Karen and I shopped with gusto and purchased a new light table, tri-fold mirrors, multi coloured Perspex blocks, a set of 9 dress up wings, magnetic skeletons, and some other fun things which the children have enjoyed through the year. We again offered the toy catalogues as a fundraiser in 2015 and raised a $345.00 which we will put toward some new and exciting resources. As the year progressed plans were unveiled for our renovations and the relocation of the children’s bathroom into the playroom. This was a very exciting and nervous time for us as relocating an entire playrooms resources and equipment into storage was a massive task, however one which we happily undertook. Karen and Dave took lead and had everything organised, relocated and still locatable as the deadline came closer. We thank all of our families for their cooperation and understanding during such a busy time. We are very excited with our new play space and are slowly making it home once again. We invite everyone to pop in and have a look at the conclusion of today’s meeting. Thank you, Ainslie Thomson—Child Care Coordinator

HALLAM SENSATIONAL MOVERS.

Once again another year has passed us all bye. I am very happy and proud of my participants and the relationship that we all share together. It is especially rewarding when we have someone return after illness or other personal issues and you see how they have missed the group and our antics. Our class groups are still aged 45+ and we still have that mixture of Fun, Laughter Support, Advice and understanding for one another. Blairlogie’ is our group of special needs persons who continue to join us on Mondays. Their involvement is great to see and they too have touched a few heart strings with some members in the group. Proving once again the power of Music is greater than we know.
