INSIDE THE LIONS • The Lions opened the final road trip of the season with a 77-72 win over Pacific. The Lions finished the game on a 14-1 run, overcoming an eight-point deficit with just over four minutes to play. The Lions com- mitted just seven turnovers and hit 12-for-19 from three. The Lions have committed just 13 turnovers the last two games and continue to lead the league in turnover margin at +2.6, ranking first in the WCC in creating 14.1 turnovers a game while turning the ball over just 11.52 times per game, second in the WCC. The average on the season has dipped below the lowest in program history, and the previous marks happen to be the last time Mike Dunlap was with the program. Three off the six lowest turnover seasons came between 1980-85 when Dunlap was an assistant coach for the Lions. • MORE ON THE BALL: The Lions also lead the league in steals at 7.2. They held a 18 to 11 edge in points off turnovers on Thursday in the win over the Tigers. The Lions, who had 22 assists against BYU on Jan. 23 and then another 22 on Saturday against Portland, are third in the league at 15.5 per game and second in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.3. The assist total against BYU and Portland was the highest against a Division I team on the year. Four different players had at least two assists on Thursday. • FROM THREE: The Lions finished the win over Pacific hitting 63.2 percent from three, their best of the season and the best since hitting 10-for-15 (66.7%) in win at 17th-ranked UCLA on Nov. 11, 2011. Steven Haney Jr. led the Lions with four, including back-to-back long balls in the Lions’ 14-1 run that pushed them to the win. Joshua Spiers and Marin Mornar had three each and senior David Humphries had a pair. The last time the Lions were in the Bay Area, Humphries posted a career-best 20 points against USF, hitting 6-for-11 from the field, going 6-for-10 from three. He is the third Lion on the season to hit at least six three-pointers in a game. Prior to this season, three Lions had done it in 20 years. Spiers erupted for a career-best 24 points, hitting 6-of-10 three-pointers, to lead the Lions in over-time against CSUN. Haney did it a month later, knocking down 7-for-12 in scoring a career-high 26 points in the win over CSUF. In that Bay Area road trip, Humphries finished hitting 10-for-17 from the field, going 10-for-16 from three (62.5 precent), averaging 17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals. The three has played a huge role this season. The Lions are 8-3 when they nine or more three-pointers and 3-11 when they are less than nine. Saturday the Lions went 9-for-25 but Portland went 15-for-31 from long range to pull away. The Pilots hit 29-of-64 three-pointers in the two meetings this season.
• AND MORE FROM LONG DISTANCE: Humphries now ranks 12th in the WCC in three-point percentage, hitting 40.3 percent (31-for-77). He is tied with Spiers, who has also hit hitting 318-for-77. Haney is 6th in the WCC in three-pointers made per game at 2.2, he has hit 56-for-167 on the season. He is now 18th in LMU history for three-pointers made in a season and 13th in attempts.
• IN THE PAINT: The West Coast Conference named LMU junior Adom Jacko as Player of the Week for Jan. 25 after he averaged 24.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games at Gersten Pavilion against BYU and San Diego. And he has continued his hot play within the WCC. Prior to Thursday, he had led the Lions in scoring for six straight games, going for 20 or better in those contests. He is the first player to do so since Haywood Eaddy went six straight games of 20 or more between Jan. 15 - Jan. 30, 1999. On Saturday against Portland, he went for 35 points and seven rebounds, hitting 13-for-20 from the field. He attempted and made his first three of the season and went 8-for-10 from the free throw line. It was the best single game scoring effort since Drew Viney had 35 against San Diego on Feb. 25, 2010. He has 11 20-point games this season and within WCC games he is averaging 19.1 ppg, increasing that to 24.5 ppg the last six games.
• MORE ON JACKO: On Jan. 23 against the Cougars, Jacko finished the game 11-for-12 from the field, equaling the all-time LMU record for shooting percentage in a game (91.6 percent - 10 or more attempts). Victor Lazzaretti went 11-for-12 against Pepperdine on Feb. 25, 1987 and Mike Yoest did it against Marquette on Jan. 6, 1988. Jacko is fifth in the WCC in double-doubles and moved to seventh in scoring at 16.6 ppg, 4th in shooting at 55.7 percent, 10th in rebounds at 6.4, 7th in blocks at 0.9 bpg and 8th in offensive rebounds at 2.4. Jacko’s first double-double, a 22-point and 10-rebound effort in the season opener, was the first double-double by an LMU player in his first game as a Lion against an NCAA Division I program in 35 years.
• DEPTH: The Lions feature a 15-man roster, and as the season began nine of them were not in an LMU uniform in 2014-15. The Lions have featured 10 different starting line-ups this season, the ninth coming Thursday against Gonzaga with Marin Mornar earning his first start of the season and freshman Jeffery McClendon earning his fourth start. And then the 10th on Saturday against Port-

land when the Lions went with Brandon Brown, Joshua Spiers, Steven Haney Jr., Mornar and Jacko. They featured that line-up against Pacific. They have played at least 10 players in every game this season except for one (at CSUF, playing nine). The Lions have played all 12 scholarship players in nine games.
• MORE ON DEPTH: On Thursday, the Lions’ bench had 22 points, getting eight points and four assists from freshman Munis Tutu. He hit a pair of clutch free throws in the final minutes, something he has done of the bench in several wins. In the win over USF, the Lions equalled a season-best 48 points from their bench, getting a team-high 20 from senior David Humphries and 11 from sophomore Joshua Spiers. The Australian duo hit nine of the Lions’ 12 three-pointers. Tutu ignited the Lions on both ends of the floor in the come-from-behind win over San Diego on Jan. 23, scoring 10 points with four assists and a career-best four steals in 25 minutes. Against USF, the Lions went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 38 seconds against. Tutu was huge, hitting all four of his attempts, playing the final 3:38 at the point after starter Brandon Brown picked up his fifth foul. Tutu finished with the four points adding six assists and just two turnovers in 13 min-utes. Against Santa Clara, Humphries had 14 of the Lions’ 29 bench points. Tutu once again was perfect from the line (4-4) and Marin Mornar was efficient in his 22 minutes, going for nine points, seven rebounds and a block. In the latest match-up at BYU, Marin Mornar had 13 points, going 7-for-8 from the free throw line
while freshman Jeffery McClendon had a productive 10 minutes with six points, five rebounds and two steals. Humphries came off the bench on Jan. 30 against USD, scoring eight points with the 10 rebounds.
• OVER 70: The Lions are 10-3 on the season when scoring more than 70 points, earning the 77-72 win at Pacific. The 97-78 setback to Portland was just the third time the Lions didn’t win a game when over 70 points... The Lions scored 50 points in the first half against BYU, the first time they have down so since they scored 54 first half points at CSUN on Feb. 18, 1992. The last time the Lions scored 50 in the first half of a WCC game was 50 against USF on Jan. 25, 1992.
• LEARNING ON THE ROAD: The Lions have now won five games on the road, earning consecutive road games in conference (USF and SCU) for the first time since defeating BYU on Jan. 19, 2012 and at Santa Clara on Jan. 24, 2012. The Lions won five straight road games that season when the league had nine mem-bers and did not have a travel partner system. Under the travel partner system, it is the Lions’ first Bay Area road sweep since defeating USF (Feb. 9, 1992) and SMC (Feb. 10, 1992)... War Memorial (now The Sobrato Center) hasn’t been the kindest of places to play for WCC opponents in it’s storied history, including the Dons picking up back-to-back national titles (1955, ‘56) under LMU alum Phil Wolpert. The Lions 87-83 win on Jan. 21 gave Head Coach Mike Dunlap and his

Lions’ back-to-back wins in San Francisco, just the fourth time in program history. They last did it in 2005 and 2006. Other “runs” in War Memorial came with a three-game streak in 1990-92, a pair of win in 1970 and 1971 and a four-game run in the Lions’ first WCC title run, 1959 through the 1962 season.
• CHARITY STRIPE: LMU is second in free throw shooting at 72.9 percent and in the first road trip to the Bay Area, the Lions missed just three free throws in 32 attempts. They went 17-for-19 against the Dons, hitting all six in the final 30 seconds to win the game. Against Santa Clara, they went 12-for-13, going 7-for-8 in the final two minutes to keep the Broncos from staging a come-back. On Thursday, they went 13-for-20, hitting 5-of-6 in the final minute... The Li-ons managed just two free throw attempts at Oregon State, missing both attempts on the front-end of one-and-ones. The Beavers went 15-for-18. Looking back 50 years, it appears this is the second time the Lions have gone with out a free throw made in program history. The other came on Nov 26, 1982 when the Lions went 0-for-1 against Idaho at the Fresno State Tournament. Free throw difference has been a fac-tor for the Lions. They are averaging 12.1 free throws made per game while opponents have made 16.7 a -4.6 difference.
• JOURNEYMAN: Senior Marin Mornar was second in the WCC in blocks a year ago, finishing with 47 as a junior to rank 5th all-time for blocks in a season. He had
three in the opener against the Titans and has 24 so far this season to move to second all-time with 117 blocks. The only four-year senior on the roster, he played in 109th game against Pacific. He is ranked 6th in the WCC in blocks at 1.0 per game. Adom Jacko is 7th with 22 blocks, just under one per game.
GAME 25Down eight with a little over four minutes to play, LMU men’s basketball would close the game on a 14-1 run, holding Pacific without a field goal the final 4:10 to earn a 77-72 win in West Coast Conference action at the Alex G. Spanos Center on Thursday afternoon. Steven Haney Jr. hit back-to-back three-pointers during the final run to lift the Lions (11-14, 4-10), giving the road team a win in the series for the 10th straight game. The Lions finished 12-for-19 from three (63.2 percent) and turned the ball over just seven times. They finished shooting 48 percent from the field while Pacific (7-16, 5-8), who was shooting 61 percent in the second half to build an eight-point lead, missed their last five shots and finished shoot-ing 49 percent for the game. Haney finished with 12 points, hitting 4-for-5 from three. Joshua Spiers led the Lions with 17 points, hitting 5-for-7 from the field, 3-for-5 from three and 4-for-5 from the free throw
line. He also had five rebounds and three assists. Marin Mornar added 13 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers and Adom Jacko added 11 points. Eric Thompson, who did not play in first meeting against the Lions, led Pacific with 19 points and
eight rebounds. Alex Kobre gave Pacific a 71-63 lead with 4:10 to play on a three-pointer. The Lions, who led 41-36 at the half and had just nine field goals to that point, cut the lead to five on a free throw from David Humphries and a lay-in by Munis Tutu. Haney then hit his back-to-back three-pointers after back-to-back defensive stops to give the Lions a 72-71 lead with 2:08 to play. Neither team would tally a field goal the rest of the way and the Lions hit 5-of-6 free throws to ice the win.
NEWEST LIONSAt the start of the semester, the Lions added fresh-man transfer Trevor Manuel from Oregon. He spent one semester with the Ducks and played nine games before requesting his release and transfer to LMU. He scored 10 points with nine rebounds. He was the No. 3-ranked player out of Michigan last year and was an All-State selection after averaging 21.9 ppg as a senior... This November, LMU men’s basketball earned commitments from Fairfax High School senior Donald Gipson and Fresno City College sophomore Josh Sykes. Gipson was a First-Team All-Los Ange-les City selection. Fairfax made it to the CIF South-ern Section regional finals, finishing 32-3 a year ago. Sykes, who graduated from Golden Valley High School in 2014, enters his second season at Fresno City College. He was named Player of the Year during his time at Golden Valley and is a reason why Fresno City is ranked fifth in the state.
On March 12, 2014, Loyola Marymount University Athletics Director Dr. William Husak named Mike Dunlap, a 1980 graduate of LMU, as the 26th head coach of the men’s bas-ketball program. Dunlap returned to the Westchester campus with more than 30 years
of college and NBA coaching experience. He enters his second season at the helm of the Lions in 2015-16.
“The first-year was about establishing the foundations of this program,” said Dunlap. “We have made some great strides in establishing a culture necessary to build a successful pro-gram. We have made some great changes and the allocation of the Burns Back Court by the University for our use will go a long way to improving the development of our program. We are very thankful to the University for their commitment. The first season has been about establish-ing a way of doing business each and every day, and we enter the second season, building on that and striving for success at the highest level.”
The Lions finished Dunlap’s first season 8-23, playing most of the season with just seven scholarship players due to injuries. His second season will feature just five players who played in a Lion uniform the year prior with eight new faces to the program. He enters his 15th season as a head coach at the collegiate level with a 336-128 record (.724).
Known for his player development and on-the-floor coaching, Dunlap was most recently the head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats for the 2012-2013 season, becoming the first coach in NBA history to win three times as many games as the year before.
Before arriving in Charlotte, Dunlap spent six years as an assistant coach in the profes-sional and college ranks. Prior to his work as an assistant, he spent nine seasons as the head coach at Metro State, leading his teams to the national titles in 2000 and 2002 while earning NABC Division II Coach of the Year honors in both of those seasons. Coach Dunlap, whose teams went to the NCAA Tournament in each of his nine seasons, posted an overall record of 248-50 (.832), winning five Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles.
In 2006, Coach Dunlap left Metro State to become an assistant coach with the Denver Nug-gets under George Karl. In two seasons with the Nuggets, he helped the team to a 95-69 record that included a 50-win season in 2007-08, the team’s first in 23 years.
Dunlap then spent the 2008-09 season as associate head coach at the University of Arizona under legendary coach Lute Olson and the 2009-10 season as associate head coach on Ernie Kent’s staff at the University of Oregon before joining Steve Lavin at St. John’s in 2010. During the 2011-12 season, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the team and served as acting head coach in all but four games while Lavin recovered from surgery to treat prostate cancer.
Dunlap’s previous head coaching experience also includes three seasons with the Adelaide 36ers in Australia’s National Basketball League and five seasons at California Lutheran Univer-sity. From 1994-97, he led the 36ers to a 59-33 record (.641) and three straight appearances in the NBL Final Four, including advancing to the Grand Final game in 1995.
Before going to Australia, Dunlap was head coach at Division III California Lutheran from 1989-94, where his teams posted an 80-54 record (.597) and won three straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles from 1992-94, while also advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1992 and 1994.
His college coaching experience also includes five seasons with the Lions (1980-85), one season at the University of Iowa (1985-86) and three seasons at the University of Southern California (1986-89).
A native of Fairbanks, Alaska, Dunlap earned an associate of arts degree in science from Pierce College in 1978, before attaining a bachelor’s degree in English from Loyola Marymount University in 1980. Dunlap and his wife have three children. An avid runner, Dunlap has a 100-mile race to his credit.
