A Message From the President.... Dear Friends and Neighbors,
As we get closer to the fall, our friends who have retreated north to
escape the “warm” Florida summer will be returning home to paradise. My
hope is that all will enjoy a safe return and we look forward to seeing each
and every one of you. That being said, we are entering that part of the
year where many, many volunteers are needed for a variety of activities.
First and foremost, is our annual Fall Garage Sale, this year to be held on
November 7. As many of you know, this event, which is the HOA's single
most profitable event throughout the year, requires many volunteers in
order to be successful. Currently, we need help selling hot dogs, making and
selling baked goods, taxi drivers and traffic control. Signup sheets for all
of these positions can be found in the clubhouse. This fall's sale stands to
be the biggest and best yet as we are exploring new areas of advertising.
In addition to the Garage Sale, we also have the Harvest Dance, the
Christmas Hayride, the Christmas Golf Cart Parade, and the New Year's
Eve Party, all coming up in a short period of time and all needing
hosts/hostesses and helpers. Please volunteer and help as your schedule
allows.
Finally, the fall brings with it nominations for the Board of Directors. If
there are things that you would like to see change, things that you would
like to see improved upon, or simply things you would like to express your
ideas about, now is the time to jump on board. We currently have three
openings, one 1-year term and two 2-year terms. I encourage you to
consider running and be a part of making the Lake Hammock Village
Homeowners Association a success. You may contact myself or any current
Board Member if you are interested.

Novous 517, the youth group of the First Baptist Church
of Lake Alfred and their Youth Pastor Rob Terry will be
picking up the remnants from our Garage Sale in
November. Put all your leftovers at the end of your
driveway. We ask that no large appliances or heavy TV’s
be put out. They are too hard to handle and we have
minimal storage available.
The proceeds will be used for the Novous 517 various
mission endeavors.

Nyla has been here 22 years… She and her husband Aaron arrived when Lake Hammock Village was called Glen Este. The Sargent family owned the park. Aaron was a retired Methodist minister and the Sargent family had a daughter who was active in the Methodist church. Knowing they were tired of the cold weather, they left Ohio. The Sharp’s knew they didn't want to live on either Florida coast, so they decided to settle here. Their son lives in Virginia and their daughter is in Lake Wales. Nyla also has 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Raising her children and being a minister’s wife joyfully occupied her younger years. Aaron died in 2002. Nyla is now 84 years young and, when not focusing on her family, she is very active at New Horizons Church. She rings hand bells, sings in the choir, and coordinates a widow's group and a women's group. A dietician by profession, she also spends 1 or 2 days a month at House Blessed. This outreach provides food and friendship to those in need. Nyla is also an avid reader and can be found at the Public Library once or twice a month. Whew!! No wonder we don't see her at home very often! While we were visiting together, Nyla said, "life has been good to me". While her body has aged a bit, she says, "from the neck up, I'm good!". Let's get to know our neighbors!

Joe & Nancy Kifus Joe and Nancy Kifus at 9 Silvercrest Drive moved her in October 2014. Joe and Nancy were born in Pennsylvania and were high school sweethearts. Joe joined the Navy in 1960 and they were married in 1962. Joe and Nancy have three children, two daughters and one son. They also have five grandchildren, two boys and three girls. They spent quite a bit of time traveling before they settled here so they knew the area already. They decided to settle close to Disney so they can take their grandchildren when they are visiting. Joe was a Sales Manager for Master Lee Industrial Service. He retired July 1, 2015. Nancy was a bookkeeper and secretary to a primary school. She retired in 2007. They both like to play CLR. When you see Nancy and Joe riding around on their golf cart, introduce yourself and make them feel at home.

INJURED GOPHER TORTOISE
The last week of August, Tommy (Patelunas) found an
injured Gopher Tortoise for Karen. She notified Richard
Spiegel and Don Van Deman who went to look for it but
couldn’t find it. Finally Karen showed Don where it was
and they put it on the golf cart and brought it to Don’s
house. The tortoise is an adult of unknown sex because
we did not want to stress it out by handling it just to
find out if it were a male or female. The shell was
cracked clear through and the animal was bleeding a
small amount and had ants all over it. We washed off
as many ants as we could, covered it with towels and
put it in one of the yellow recycling bins. Don took it to
Lake Wales Veterinary on Mountain Lake Cutoff Road
because they will take injured wildlife to treat.
Lake Hammock is fortunate to have a thriving
community of Gopher Tortoises. They are an
endangered species and are well protected by Florida
Statutes. There are hefty fines for harassing, injuring or
killing one of these animals. You need to stay back from
the animals and their burrows 25’ by law. Their
burrows can be as long as 30’ and are dug out by the
front feet of the tortoise. Many other animals use the
burrows, such as: rabbits, fox, snakes and other species
of turtles. We have many active burrows and several
that are inactive. We have both mature and immature
tortoise, which would indicate that the adults are
mature enough to breed. Please be careful on your golf
carts so that we can keep our population healthy. Drive
on the paths. Observe the animals from a distance and
please DO NOT take them to water! They are dry land
animals! They receive all the water they need from the
plants they eat.
As of now the tortoise is stable and the vet is deciding
the best way to repair the broken shell. When it is well
enough, it will be returned to where it was found. If
you would like to make a donation to the wildlife fund
please make the check out to Lake Wales Veterinary
Hospital and send it to: Lake Wales Veterinary Hospital,
520 Mountain Lake Cutoff Rd., Lake Wales, FL 3389.
Mark: Wildlife Rehab.
