Istanbul located in the North-West of Turkey is the only city in the world built on two continents. It stands on the shores of Bosphorus Strait where the waters of the Black Sea mingle with the waters of the Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn.

Istanbul embraces two continents, one reaching towards Asia and the other reaching towards Europe and guards the precious relics of five Empires: the Roman Empire, East Roman Empire, Latin Empire, Byzantine Empire and Ottoman Empire which has been the capital; a unique link between East and West, past and present.

It honors and preserves the legacy of its past while looking forward to its modern future. The museums, churches, palaces,

great mosques, bazaars and sights of natural beauty seem inexhaustible. Not only historic, but also a magnificent city fascinating and vividly alive. Beneath the unchanging skyline of domes and minarets there is the continual bustle and movement of the crowd and roaming vehicles along the ancient cobbled streets.

As you relax on the shores of the Bosphorus at sunset contemplating the red evening light reflected sky, you will understand suddenly why so many centuries ago settlers chose to build on this remarkable site. You’ll will feel that Istanbul is truly one of the most glorious cities in the world. However long you stay, just a few days or longer, your time will be wonderfully filled in this unforgettable city.

About Antalya

Oly

osAttalus, King of Pergamon, named the city “Attaleia”, founded Antalya in the 2nd century B.C. The city of Antalya stretches along the bay bearing its name, and is built at 39 meters altitude on a rocky coastline. One is immediately struck by the Taurus Mountains rising to 3,756 meters above the coastline, interspersed with valleys of varying sizes. The taurus Mountains against the blue sky, the precipies and especially the caves close to the sea add another dimension to the beauty of the region.

Small and large streams emerging from the west side of the Taurus water the plains on their journey to the Mediterranean. This translucent running water, cascading in to the sea at points along the cost, is another attractive sight. Every kind of tropical plant can be found along the coast. In Antalya the four seasons only appear on a calendar, as there is no real winter.

The summers are hot and rainless while the other months are warm and often rainy. The average annual temperature in Antalya is 65 F. The average temperature in the summer months is about 95 F. The population of Antalya is about 2,250,000 and the avarage number of tourist annually that visit Antalya is 12,000,000 people. Antalya is one of the most visited city in the world and among top ten for tourism.

The harbor area is undoubtedly the most interesting part of the city. Although construction was begun at the time of the foundation of the city the surviving remains generally date back to the 3rd century AD with traces of Roman and Ottoman restorations work in the upper parts of the walls. The marina is surrounded by numerous bars, cafes, restaurants and tea-gardens, set on the top of the cliffs, high above the harbor, one can enjoy a marvelous bird’s eye view of the loveliest part of the old city.

Cappadocia, located in Central Anatolia, was named by the Persian King Darrius as Katpatuka (which means the land of beautiful horses). Craters and chimneys domi-nated the landscapes. Then million years ago, mount Erciyes erupted violently and Mount Hasan covered the ground with tufa, a soft Stone made from lava, ash and mud. Then the rain, wind and flood waters from the Kızılırmak River shaped the tufa into the most mysteri-ous remarkable cone shaped structures called peribaca “fairy chimneys”. One of Cappadocia’s most interest-ing villages is found below the town of Derinkuyu, the underground city. This town dates back to the Hittite times, but evidence from excavations revealed that the Hittites only used the top level. Currently there have been discovered eight levels of dwellings, storerooms, chapels and parts of monasteries. These man-made underground caves are grouped around a 280 feet shaft with a cleverly devised ventilation system consisting of 52 vents. The center of the city is a chapel, which today is used as a mosque. It dates back to the 16th or 17th century and contains paintings of Jesus, Mary, angels and saints.“Goreme” the famous rock churches lies ad-jacent to the village of Goreme. Numerous rock church-es can be found in this area as well as the spectacular “open air museum”. Other sites include the Dervent, Zelve, Ihlara, and Soganli Valleys as well as the city of Uchisar. Cappadocia’s charming landscape remains unparalleled in history and mystery.

The name of the author of these letters written to seven churches is stated as John (Rev.1:1). He begins by saying that God sent the visions he is going to relate to His Servant John to the seven Churches in Asia.(Rev.1:4). So John writes this letter to the seven churches.

The Seven Churches are all in the West of Turkey. The language of the book is not easy to understand. Yet this book revelation ‘’Tell us what John had seen in a vision, about God’s message and about what Jesus Christ had said and done. ’’Revelation 1:2.

God will bless everyone who reads this prophecy to others, and he will bless everyone who hears and obeys it. That is why John writes Seven Letters to the Seven Churches in Asia minor so that they can read the message and obey it and tell it to others.

Because, the Christians of John’s time accepted Christ as their King and they suffered from the Roman rulers. Even John the writer of revelation was imprisoned on Patmos

Island where the Roman officers held people who refused to worship the Emperor. So John the writer of this book preached God’s message and Spoke about Jesus’ Word and Work. Therefore he was in prison on Patmos Island. There he saw the vision about God’s message and about what Jesus Christ had said and done (Rev.1:1). The one who was speaking to John was the Son of Man (Jesus Christ).

Christ explains to John the writer of the Seven Letters to the Seven Churches: he writes things down as he hears them from Jesus. Christ explains, The seven stars which are the angels of the Seven Churches; and the lamb/stands are the angels of the seven churches’’ (Rev.1:20).

‘It was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, ‘I Am Alfa and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send in unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea, and unto Ephesus’’. Çanakkale / DardanelÇanakkale (pronounced [tʃaˈnakkaˌle]) is a town and seaport in Turkey, in Çanakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles (or Hellespont) at their narrowest point.

Çanakkale Province, like Istanbul Province, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (European) side of the strait.

Bodrum / HalicarnasosBodrum is the site of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, the location of the famous Mausoleum of Halicarnassus (built after 353 BC) - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Unfortunately, the ancient monument was destroyed by earthquakes in the Middle Ages - some of the remnants can be seen in London’s British Museum.

According to Herodotus, born B.C. 484 in Halicarnassus (ancient name for Bodrum), the city was founded by the Durians. Megarans enlarged the city B.C. 650 and changed its name to Halicarnassus, and then Persians started to rule the city from B.C. 386

Halicarnassus had its glorious days, when it was the capital of the Karia B.C. 353. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum, was built there by Artemisia for the memory of King Mausolos.

Known as one of the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World, The Mausoleum was built by - Artemisia, the sister and the wife of King Mausolos, B.C. 355. This work of art, stood on a 21 stepped pyramid which was 46 meters high and carried a horse car symbolizing victory on it, had 36 marble columns in Ionian style.

The mausoleum was destroyed in an earthquake; and the ruins were used in building of the Halicarnassus Castle. Many statues and reliefs from the mausoleum were carried to The British Museum by archeologist C. Newton, in 1856 and now lies there for public viewing.

Bodrum is a fascinating place as it has a pleasing contrast between the Ancient city - where there are discernable fragments everywhere in the town -and a playground for rich Turks and an array of foreign visitors.

Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) is one of the most interesting places in the world, justly famous not only for the entrancing beauty of its unique geological formations but also for its historical remains. The calcium oxide-rich waters flowing down the southern slope of Caldag located north of the ruins have, over the millennia, built up deposits of white travertine on the plateau thus fully justifying both the site’s ancient name of Hierapolis (Holy City) and its modern one of Pamukkale. Besides Hierapolis, other important archaeological sites nearby are Laodicea and Colossae. Ancient Hierapolis appears to have been founded by King Eumenes II of Pergamon and its name is derived from Hiera, the wife of King Telephos, the legendary founder of Pergamon. The city became subject to Rome in 33 BC. In 17 BC. during the reign of Tiberius it suffered a heavy earthquake that substantially destroyed the city, requiring it to be rebuilt.

AphrodisiasAphrodisias, the City of Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, about two hours east of Ephesus and 2.5 hours west of Pamukkale, is one of the Aegean region’s most interesting archeological sites.

By the 8th century BC, Aphrodisias was famous as the City of Aphrodite, and pilgrims came to pay homage to the Goddess of Love at her temple. The goddess was called Venus by the Romans, and it’s easy to imagine ancient fertility rites such as the belly dance being performed in her temple here. With the victory of Christianity, her temple - Temple of Aphrodite was converted to a church.

Today the ruins, set amid fertile fields of cotton and groves of spindly cypresses, include an elaborate Tetrapylon, or monumental gate, the foundations of the Temple of Aphrodite, the Christian bishop’s palace, a beautiful marble odeon in excellent condition, and a stadium still capable of seating nearly its original capacity of 30,000 spectators.

The capital of the Ottoman Empire was Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). The Empire was the strongest power in the entire region, quickly conquering surrounding areas, and planning to conquer Rome, the capital of the West. The Ottoman Empire’s huge size contributed to its fall, and it was replaced with the Republic of Turkey in 1923, though its territory was only a portion of the Ottoman Empire.

When was Turkey founded ?The modern Republic of Turkey was founded on October 29, 1923, which is now celebrated as Republic Day, Turkey’s national holiday. Are turkeys (the birds) named after Turkey the country ?Yes. Though origins of the name are not fully known, many historians believe that when Europeans first saw turkeys in America, they believed the birds were a type of guineafowl, which were imported into Europe via Turkey (from Africa). Thus, they associated the birds with Turkey. They also believed they were in the far East, adding to the belief that the birds were exotic eastern animals.

Where do people believe Noah’s ark landed ?Some people believe Noah’s ark landed at Mount Ararat, on Mount Masis which is the highest peak of the Ararat Mountains. Mount Ararat is located in far eastern Turkey.
