From the Pastors Desk Dear Parish Family,
I had a really lovely night on Tuesday night at the
Extraordinary Ministers of Communion meeting. There was lots of
healthy discussion and some formation around some of the sometimes
unseen parts of the ministry. I find the social end to the evening
as helpful and certainly as entertaining as any other part of the
night. A very huge and personal thank you to all those who were
able to be present on the night and I know there were others who
would have been there but for good reason were unable to be: I do
fully understand the challenges of night meetings. It was a big
help to me to spend some time getting to know a few more people
better. I am so looking forward to something similar this coming
week with the readers: and if you didnt hear I forgot to turn the
oven for the hot food, turned the grill on instead, so the
challenge is on to get that right this week!! I have a plan,
loosely in place to meet with everyone at some point in the next
few months over a cuppa as an opportunity to get to know everyone
better, a bit of formation doesnt go astray either. The most
obvious groups are where I am starting. Part of a group and want me
to attend call me!!
Just a few little things from Tuesday for all three Masses: If
you are rostered on to be a Minister can you make sure that you let
me or the sacristan know that you have arrived. My preference would
be for you to arrive a few minutes early of course but I know that
sometimes that is not always possible. I get anxious during the
pre-Communion part wondering if I have enough ministers or if
everyone has arrived so if you would let me know I would really
appreciate it.
If you are rostered on and you are going to be away and you have
found someone to take your place could you get them to make
themselves known to either myself or to the sacristan. I am mostly
standing at the door anyway and the sacristans mostly are getting
the final items set up so are down around the sacristy.
Would all ministers come forward as soon as the Lamb of God
finishes and take your place on the sanctuary as soon as possible.
The first minister or closest minister depending on which church,
please go to the Tabernacle on the way to your place on the
sanctuary.
If you know someone who was able to attend you might get them to
show you a couple of processes in regard to purifying or wiping the
chalice during Communion. There is a knack to wiping both the
exterior as well as the interior lip of the cup and then
turning it slightly so the next person gets to drink from a dry
and clean part.
Sometimes we get a bit nervous giving Communion to someone who
has chosen to receive on the tongue. Be confident is the first rule
of thumb. The person presenting to receive on the tongue will come
with a dry mouth, their tongue extended a little past the bottom
lip and with their mouth fairly well open; naturally their head
will be slightly tipped back. This helps those distributing
Communion to be confident about what they are doing and those
receiving to know that they are not only respected in their
decision but also that there wont be any mishaps due to nerves or
uncertainty.
And if there is a spill of either the precious blood or a host
gets dropped whilst it is unfortunate accidents occasionally do
happen, the best rule of thumb is not to panic but to simply pick
up the dropped host for consumption/disposal later and should the
precious blood drop we mark the spot with a purifier and after Mass
there is a process for cleaning the area.
After Communion each minister who distributes a chalice consumes
and purifies before returning to their places in the
congregation.
My promise to those gathered was to work with Sharon over the
next week or so to make sure that our Rosters are correct. So if
you have put your name down to be on a roster and it hasnt appeared
and you havent mentioned it to me over the last two weeks can you
tell me this weekend? If you know you were on a roster once but
cant work why you dont seem to be on now let me know this weekend
as well. And somewhere in all of that it will all work!! Clear as
mud!
Best wishes for the week ahead,
Fr Greg

Parish Logo As the result of our notice regarding the design of
a new Parish Logo we have received correspondence from Anne Moloney
and comments from others supporting the existing logo. The Parish
Team has now decided to recommend to the Parish that we maintain
the existing logo with the following explanation of it.
The bridge is one of the towns landmarks and symbolises the link
between Forster and Tuncurry making us one single community of
Forster Tuncurry.
The cross in the sky shows that Christ is with us. The two
communities coming together on the
bridge represented by the young, the old, the sick/disabled, the
family.
The sense of a caring and inclusive community The dolphins and
palm trees representing the local
environment as part of our identity.
This logo was arrived at thanks to the artistic talents of
Debbie Tinker (daughter of Dorothy Tinker) back in 1989 and has
served our Parish since that time.

Parish would like to thank all those who continue to generously

Homily by Richard Leonard SJ In years gone by the major focus of
this feast of Corpus Christi was a procession that usually
concluded with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Many of us
have fond memories of Benediction: a bejewelled cope and
monstrance, the flickering candles, the Divine Praises and Latin
hymns. It all worked to create a magical atmosphere. As richly
theatrical as it was, the magical side of it was part of the
problem.
In medieval times Catholics rarely received Holy Communion. So
much so it was in this context that the Church ruled that we have
to communicate at least once a year. In the absence of communion,
veneration of the Blessed Sacrament took on a great significance.
Seeing the host was thought to impart an intense power.
Although in the last 100 years we have been encouraged to
receive communion more frequently, the magical properties ascribed
to the host persist in some people's devotional thinking.
As Catholics we believe that Jesus is really and personally
present to us in the broken bread and shared cup of the Eucharist.
And although we believe that Christ is present in the Scriptures,
the assembly and the ministers of the Church, we hold that Christ's
presence under the form of bread and wine is one filled with the
greatest intimacy and uniqueness.
The Eucharist is not intimate and unique because it is magic.
It's not intimate and unique because we gaze upon the elements. The
Eucharist is intimate and unique because earthly signs are
transformed by

God's love, and are consumed in faith. As we eat and drink these
elements Christ becomes part of us, and we come alive in
Christ.
In the fifth century Saint Augustine taught his people that if
they truly loved the Eucharist they would become what they eat. The
same is true for us today. By receiving into our hands the bread
blessed and broken, the cup poured and shared, we say Amen to
becoming the same in Christ: blessed, broken, poured out and shared
in love. We commune with God and God with us in the Eucharist so
that just as earthly gifts are transformed into Christ so through
us will be the entire world, and all things in it.
There is a huge and important difference between grace and
magic. One is a trick for show. The other is the power of love,
which expresses itself in faith, hope and service.
In a profound poem French Jesuit Didier Rimaud challenges those
of us who love the Eucharist to see it linked to the liberation
begun in the Exodus, consummated in the Resurrection and working in
our world today.
In remembrance of you, We take the bread of Easter in our hands,
This Bread do we consume: It does no longer taste of bitter herbs,
nor of unleavened bread. It is the bread of a land promised us
where we shall be set free. In remembrance of you, We take the wine
of Easter at our feast, This wine do we hold dear. It does no
longer taste of bitter springs, nor of dark salty pools. It is the
wine of land promised us where we shall be made whole. In
remembrance of you, From exile we return. In remembrance of you, We
walk across the sea!
No wonder the early Christians called the Body and Blood of
Christ, food for the journey. May this Eucharist strengthen and
embolden us to help God liberate and transform the world through
how we spend our lives.
