ne of the biggest challenges that Hispanicshave in researching their genealogy is that somany records are in Spanish.
Records after 1836 were mostly written inEnglish. Those records are available to us, and thatis the basis of our current Anglo history. But ourgenealogy and history started way before the for-mation of the 2ndRepublic of Texas (1836). EstevanF. Austin maintained two written records, one in
Spanish and one in English, but that practice waseliminated by the second president of the Republicof Texas, Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar. That is whymost Texas history books give a very basic history ofTexas and the rest of the southwest prior to 1836.
Many records written in Spanish were destroyedby groups who had an interest in rewriting his-tory. The Know Nothings was one group and theKnights of the Golden Circle was another group. The forerunner to these two groups was the armyof Felix Huston, a Mississippi lawyer of volatile
temper and decidedly aggressive intentions towardMxico.1 Historians can track the elimination ofTejano land grant families and their replacementsby the names of those who came to Texas with FelixHuston. Few Tejano families survived the purgethat began in Victoria along the Lavaca River, whichincluded the execution of the De Len family, thefounders of Victoria. After the war for Texas Inde-pendence, the De Len family was subjected to hor-rible injustices. As one historian put it: "They becamethe victims of the most unjust discrimination ever
known in Texas." The family had been robbed of theirdignity and all of their lands. They did not even havemonies to pay for tombstones for their dead.2
Many Mexicanos have told stories of the Texasvolunteers who joined the United States Army dur-ing the Mexican War. The Texas volunteers headedstraight to the municipal records with the intent tofind land titles and to sack and burn them. LosBexareos have found some of these records in theirsearch for their genealogy. The descendants of
towns people were asked to take bundles of theserecords and hide them from the Texas volunteersOur members listened to the familys storiesregarding these records from the gatekeepers them-selves.
!!!!!
We complain about the lack of Indigenous/Spanish/Mexican/Tejano history before 1836. How-ever, we still have thousands of Spanish records that
need to be translated.
One may not be fluent in Spanish, and the oldSpanish causes many to give up. Many of us do nothave the time to learn how to read the old languageMany of us depend on the current fast technology, and it frustrates us to have to meticulously readthe beautifully, handwritten cursive writing in oldSpanish. And finally, as our December speaker, theTexas State Archivist, Jelaine Chubb, informed usthat sometimes even the expert translators disagreeon the meaning of a word.
My wife, Sandra, was translating family docu-ments for one of our members. I was astonishedwith the large amount of symbolism that Spanishrecords have regarding the Catholic Church. Ibelieve that translators will not obtain the gist or thecorrect meaning of some of the translations withoutthe Catholic symbolisms.
I thought, well, this is one reason experts maydisagree one understands religion and the otherdoes not. One phrase described the ancestor as beingmarried and veiled. "Veiled in the face of the
Church" means placing the Humeral Veil over theheads or shoulders of the bride and groom duringthe celebration of the marriage. It has a mysticalsignificance emphasizing that the two are now onein spirit as well as in body. The Humeral Veil is anoblong-scarf of the same material as the vestmentsworn by the priest officiating at the marriage. It is anancient custom, but not used now.3

Another reason it is difficult to translate Spanishrecords is that many given names include Mara.It is more confusing when males are named Mara.Once again, the religion of the parents comes intoplay. Researchers may become confused. In my ownpersonal familys case my great-grandfather, Luz,was nowhere to be found until we found that hisname was not Luz but Mara de la Luz. Thename elucidates the familys deep respect for OurLady of Guadalupe. Luz is spelled out in the sha-dow of her tunic. To my ancestors, there was a realconnection to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and what thismeant may be lost to us. Another unexpected practice in Hispanic genea-logy is when a young child dies, the next same sexinfant is named exactly as their previous dead is-bling. Researchers may find two birth records butonly one death record or some other type of confus-
ing combination.
The translation continued with instructions thatthe ancestor be buried when the Lord send himdeath and that he be returned to the earth. Is thisa symbolism of the Good Friday ritual in the Catho-lic Church? The document continued that his burialbe in the tradition of Saint Francis. What does thatmean?
Yes, our Hispanic genealogy is locked in many ofthe Spanish texts. Translation of those Spanish textsneeds to be done. This is a good opportunity to
begin our learning curve. We will get better attranslating the old Spanish texts. We should notforget that a good understanding of religion may beneeded to translate correctly.
!!!!!
Los Bexareos obtained permission from theUniversity of Arizona to reprint a book on how totranslate Spanish text. The limited edition NorthernSpanish Research Guide is available from our booksselection while supplies last.
There are many Spanish records that still need to

There is more to genealogy than justgathering names of ancestors. It is im-portant to do the basics, like pedigreecharts, names, dates, places, family worksheets, etc. But, let us not forget thatthere are stories that go with thesenames. There are histories in the placesand times they lived. Photographs andstories bring our ancestors to life. Herewe intend to transport you to websitesthat tell our stories. A New Years Resolution - Protect Your LegacyBY: Anthony Delgado
For Los Bexareos Genealogical and Historical Society
ouve spent endless hours researching your family tree. Many of you have gone to county courthousescity libraries and cemeteries in search of a name, a date, a place that might lead you to your ancestor. You have burned the midnight oil searching the internet. You have accumulated genealogical booksover the years and now have your own family library. You have preserved old family photos and
collected family artifacts. You have experienced the frustrations of hitting a brick wall and the ecstasy offinding that long lost relative. You have, in fact, built your family legacy.
What happens to your research when you leave?
Many members of Los Bexareos Genealogical and Historical Society have 10 - 20 - 30 years of research. They have compiled notes, journals, photo scrapbooks, and a library of family history. We encourage everymember to prepare a Genealogical Willand add it to their Last Will and Testament. Find a descendant who iswilling to take the responsibility of carrying on your never-ending research and/or make a copy for yourgenealogical society. This is definitely something to consider for the new year - 2015. !

We had a wonderful time in Spain going to small villages and towns. Many had Jewish quarters that were verybeautiful. We even went to Placencia where there was a Jewish Necropolis. Our ancestors, the Ha Levis and SantaMaras, lived in Placencia after leaving Burgos, but we found no sign of their presence. Merida was filled withRoman ruins that were just as beautiful as the ones in Rome. We went to Medelln where Hernn Corts and ourancestor, Captain Andrs Tapia, were born. We went to Trujillo where Pizarro was born, and where there was a mostbeautiful Alcazaba and the best churros I have ever eaten. It was worth the climbmy hips had to endure!!! Cceres, where another ancestor, Hernando Fernndez Castro, was born. They had a wonderful museum and a JewishQuarter. Hervs was a lovely tiny village that caters to those following the Jewish Sefarad route, and it also has a
lovely Jewish Quarter. We bought a Menorah there. Burgos has the most awesome cathedral we have ever seen, anda Human Evolution Museum that is fabulous!! There have been some new digs found near Burgos that are supposedto be the oldest in Europe. Gilbert is all excited about going there on another trip just to visit those digs!! I don'tknow if my hips and knees can take such climbing!!! Another tiny town we visited was Covarrubias. Supposedly, the Cadenas lived there in the past, but again we found no signs of them; however, in a nearby town, we found astreet call "Las Cadenas." We also got to hear a wonderful group of monks sing Gregorian Chants for their eveningVespers. The monastery in Santo Domingo de Silos was outstanding. The church was so old and spark, but sooooopeaceful while I sat all alone waiting for Gilbert to find parking.
The roasted lamb we had in the tiny village of Guadalupe was EXCELLENT, and the hotel/monastery was themost beautiful place we have ever stayed in. !

AMBROSIO C.LEALBY:David J. Leal
For Los Bexareos Genealogical and Historical Society
Ambrosio C. LEAL, age 88, joined his wife with the Lord on 13December 2014. He was born in General Bravo, Nuevo Len,Mxico on 3 March 1926, to Ambrosio LEAL, Sr., and Juana
TIJERINA Lealof the same town. He was preceded in death byhis parents, his wife of 64 years Elvira GARZA Leal, a brotherand four sisters. He is survived by his loving sons, David J.LEAL, M.B.A, Adrian C. LEAL, Esq., and Daniel H. LEAL,M.D. He spent the first years of his life with his family on a
ranch given to his mother by her father, Casimiro TIJERINA. The civil unrestin the countryside forced the family to relocate to Monterrey, Mxico and thisis where he lived until his marriage. He attended the Pre-patoria de Monterrey and later joined an amateur basketballteam "Transportes del Norte" where he was given the nameel "pjaro" due to his quick, agile moves. He and his teamwon an amateur national championship in 1948, and he waslater inducted into their Hall of Fame. He married ElviraGARZA of San Antonio, Texas on 1 October 1950, at SanFernando Cathedral. He immigrated, against the strongobjections of the family patriarch, general BonifacioSALINAS LEAL, on 8 December 1950, as a resident alien. He operated a paintcontracting business and, with his wifes help, manage their rental properties. He was a member of the Monte Vista Historical Society, and Los BexareosHispanic Genealogical and Historical Society. He was a proud descendant ofSpanish Conquistadors and the founding families of Monterrey, Mxico (1596).His Tejano roots include being a direct descendant of Capitn Antonio LEALwho with his brother, general Alonso DE LEN, came to Texas in the 1680sin search of French incursion and found the remains of LaSalle's fort. He wasalso a direct descendant of governador Clemente DE LA GARZA FALCN,governor of Texas y Coahuila in the 1730s. He was a member of Our Lady ofGrace Catholic Church and attended mass daily with his wife as long as theirhealth permitted. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Vatican with his wifefurther solidified his faith. He was born at a time when the Mexicanconstitution and laws were very anticlerical and his family had to travel toMonterrey to baptize him in 1927; most clerics had already gone into exileand church properties confiscated and closed. The strong and loyal faith hisparents demonstrated throughout his early years was a faith he tried toemulate throughout his life. When being given the last rites his face visiblychanged from one showing tension and pain to one relaxed and peaceful. Forthis and his visits we will be forever grateful to Father Patrick GUIDON, OMI,of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Private religious services were held forthe immediate family with interment at San Fernando II Cemetery. Memorialcontributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic School, 205 W. HuisacheAvenue, San Antonio, 78212.

read last months Message from the Editor andthe article linked to it, regarding General Bernar-
do de Glvez y Madrid, with keen interest andthoroughly enjoyed it. I want to add my little Tejanocontribution to the Revolutionary War discussion. My ancestor, Leonor Delgado, was a member of oneof the Canary Islander families who in 1731 foundedthe civil settlement Villa de San Fernando de Bjarwhich together with the Presidio de Bjar and theMisin San Antonio de Valero (the lamo) combinedto form the genesis of what is now San Antonio,Texas.
After she became the widow of the cattle breederJuan Jos Flores de brego y Valds, she donatedcattle, horses, mules, sheep and goats from her Ran-cho de San Jos de los lamos to General Bernardode Glvez during the American Revolutionary War.
I submitted the necessary paperwork to theDaughters of the American Revolution on LeonorDelgados behalf because I wanted a Hispanic wo-man to be a member of the DAR. The paperworkwas accepted, making her a patriot of the DAUGH-TERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. I thinkshe may be the first Hispanic woman to become amember of the DAR. When I was sent the certifi-cate, her name was written as LEONOR FLORES. Iwrote the Registrar noting the error --- she was
LEONOR DELGADO. The response I received wasthat it was the policy of the DAR to use married
names, so let it be known that ourLeonor Delgadothe first Hispanic woman to be a patriot of the DARis registered as LEONOR FLORES. The registrardid allow that my certificate to read Leonor Del-gado but her official patriot name still remainsLeonor Flores. The reason she has a supplementalcertificate is that I came into the DAR on my Irishancestor and patriot, Robert Hamilton. Subsequentcertificates are considered supplemental. SomehowI got a chuckle out of all of this!

he story of Bernardo de Glvez isone that must be told to our chil-dren, our family and friends, and to
everyone we meet.
Every household of every citizen ofthe United States with Native People-Spanish-Mexican-Tejano ancestors shoulddisplay a picture of the individual whomay be responsible for securing the
independence of the United States, or at the very least for giving thecolonies a fighting chance to win the American Revolutionary War(1775-1783). The following link is a must read:

All Hispanics should be proud of their ancestors contribution tothe independence of this great nation. Without their selfless acts, firstcattle drives (yes, first cattle drives from this area), monetarycontributions and much more, there might not be a United Sates ofAmerica.
Be proud of your ancestors. Spread the word.Sylvia Morales
