2014 C.D. Howe Institute Report on Giving 1

The C.D. Howe Institute has had a dynamic year in 2014. With this Report on Giving

we would like to thank members and friends who made the Institute’s success possible.

Your philanthropy has enabled the Institute to carry on its strong tradition of policy impact that raises the standard of living for all Canadians.

The strength of the Institute’s work is reflected by the wide range of policy leaders who cite our publications and participate in our events. Our work is regularly cited in provincial legislatures, parliamentary committees, budget documents, and in national and international media.

Many ingredients go into our success – including the involvement of policymakers, thought-leaders and scholars. At the base of it all is strong and loyal member support. It is your philanthropy and involvement that makes C.D. Howe Canada’s most trusted source of essential policy intelligence.

Thank You!

Major Gifts and Grants

Private support makes the C.D. Howe Institute’s work possible.

People are often surprised by our modest resources. We have only one office, and about 30 staff. We have no eight-figure endowments nor major, multi-year government grants. All donations are purely philanthropic – the Institute does not accept any donations that stipulate a predetermined result or otherwise inhibit the independence of its staff and authors.

Targeted major gifts and event sponsorships enable supporters to bolster the Institute’s research and

dissemination capacities in specific areas of interest. They complement the annual membership campaign, strengthening the Institute and enabling it to recruit scholars and support programs that enhance its ability to develop innovative solutions to policy challenges. The Institute’s policy impact would not have been possible in the absence of support from the following donors and sponsors:

“Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed how policy choices taken by senior decision-makers foster impactful consequences. The C.D. Howe Institute provides outstanding, independent, peer-reviewed, non-partisan research for crafters of policy. This support for making the best possible decisions is the primary reason our family businesses continue our stalwart involvement with the Institute.”–Scott M. Burns,Chairman & CEO, BURNCO Group of Companies

“Currently in Canada we are at a stage where, in many aspects of public policy, difficult decisions will have to be made. The work done by the C.D. Howe Institute provides both policymakers and the public with valuable information to make the correct choices. This is why I support the Institute.”–– Richard Howson, President, The Petman Foundation

Donors to the Institute’s Annual Appeal

The C.D. Howe Institute would like to thank all those who contributed to its annual appeal in 2014. Unlike other organizations, C.D. Howe has no eight-figure endowments or major, multi-year government grants. It cannot rely on taxpayers’ funds or union dues. Instead, it relies entirely on the philanthropic support of individuals and organizations that care about Canada’s future.

Jim Copeland, Jason Gonsalves and Phil Noble 11
