More Hispanic AthletesNeed To Be Recruited

If a movement needs to be made in college sports for the Hispanic athletes, this movement

needs to be made now. For many years, if not too many years, the

Black African-American fought for their rights to be free from slavery and for civil rights too. And it came with a high price. Many African-

Americans died for expressing their Freedom of Speech. Even those with a dream died too. Today, in college sports, the Black African

American and White American both dominate most, if not all, college sports. In basketball, at

least 90% are Black African Athletes. Why?With National Signing Day just around the cor-ner, some Rio Grande Valley athletes will either sign DI, DII, DIII, or junior college scholarships. But, only a hand full of Hispanic athletes will get

to play at the next level. Most interesting, not one RGV Hispanic athlete will be offered to play

basketball at the University of Texas-RGV. A few years ago, a 5’3” Hispanic female athlete

signed with then, University of Texas-Pan American and became the all-time leading

scorer. Her name was Bianca Torre from Har-lingen South High School. A few years before her, another Hispanic athlete signed with the

University of Auburn and won numerous of shot put awards in the SEC Conference. His name is Stephen Saenz from Rio Grande City. He also represented Mexico in the 2012 London

Olympics. NFL player, Roberto Garza worked his way as a walk-on football player from Rio Hondo HS to

play for Texas A&I University. He also worked two jobs in college, and eventually, was drafted in the NFL. He now plays for the Chicago Bears

and has made one Super Bowl appearance. At Colorado State, McAllen H.S. basketball

player, J.J. Avila Jr. (6’8” 260lbs) leads the team in scoring.

Now, David Anzaldua (6’7” 325lbs) from Edinburg North HS will get his chance to play

football for the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners football team in 2014 as

National Signing Day is near. But, in the meantime, the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTPA) Basketball program

struggles to win games and continues to

struggle to fill game day seats. All of the men’s 17 athletes (Black African Americans and

Whites) listed on the roster are not from the Rio Grande Valley? On the girls, 16 (Black African Americans) basketball players with 18 players

listed. Three players listed are unnamed? For the second season in a row, the 2014 Class

5A Region IV Basketball Championships will be played at the University of Texas-RGV Field

House. And just like last year, the semifinal games were sold out with Valley fans. The

games featured girls teams from Harlingen and Weslaco. The Brownsville Porter boys team also

qualified along with Laredo United. Does the Hispanic athlete from the Rio Grande

Valley deserve an opportunity to shine in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in basket-

ball? You bet. Should the rosters in basketball accommodate at least 4 spots for male and female Hispanic

basketball players? You bet.As a member of the National Association of

Hispanic Journalists from Washington D.C., in the past, comments from coaches have disturb

myself as a journalist. It’s always the same comment too. “Hispanic athletes are not good enough.” Good enough? The real problem is that the Hispanic athlete is not looked at first

when it comes to recruiting. Imagine if every sport offered at UT-RGV fea-

tured at least four RGV Hispanic athletes? This new University of Texas-RGV is about com-ing together. The time is now, to come together

with the RGV Hispanic athletes. UT-RGV belongs to the Rio Grande Valley. It be-longs to the Hispanic athlete too. It’s their time to shine. In turn, the fans will come. The Valley is loyal to our athletes. Give them a chance to

play. The movement begins now.

Unbeatable? The Lady Panthers need to stay healthy for a another playoff run .

Very balanced. Can the Lady Cougars win the outright 30-5A title?

A 32-4A District title in 2014? You bet! These Lady Tigers are for real.

Down the stretch is when it counts and head coach Nora Zamarippa knows how.

These Lady Wildcats just don’t give up. A win over Weslaco High would be great.

A first district title for the Lady Saber-cats? Why not. They play to win.

This team could go three rounds deep in the 5A playoffs. Go Chargers!

The Lady Raiders play with heart with no player taller than 5’6”. Pure heart wins.

With all the talent that comes from this area, these Lady Rattlers are beatable.

Way out there in Willacy County with all them windmills are the Lady Bulldogs.

More than 10,000 High School Athletes will sign letters of intent to play college sports. Rio Grande Valley players will

also get their chance to shine at he next level.

(McAllen, Tx)- More than 10,000 high school athletes will sign college scholarships to play sports in 2014-15 on February 4th. It’s called National Signing Day. A day that will change the lives of most high school athletes. From the Rio Grande Val-ley, two athletes will get the chance to play in the elite NCAA Division I. At 6’8 and 320 lbs, offensive linemen David Anzaldua from Edinburg North High School

will sign his letter of intent to play football for the University of Texas-San Antonio Road-runners. UTSA head football Larry Coker will make his trip to Edinburg North HS and will stand side by side with his prized linemen. “He’s a good one,” says North head coach Roy Garza. In back-to-back seasons, Anzaldua led the Cougars to the UIL State 5A Division II Regional Football finals. The Cougars offense averaged more than 300 yards rushing with offense tackle Anzaldua leading key blocks for his run-ning backs and the Cougars

also averaged another 150 yards passing per game. “It’s been a pleasure to coach David and playing at UTSA will only give his teammates, fans, and myself a chance to watch him play in San Antonio,” adds Garza. Another Rio Grande Valley player headed to play basket-ball at the Division I level will be Weslaco High School senior Laura Van Tilburg, a 6’3” center. The tall lanky player injured her knee last season just as the Weslaco Lady Panthers quali-fied for the State 5A Region IV Basketball Tournament. In the regional semifinal playoffs, the

Lady Pan-thers lost to Cibolo Steele at the University of Texas-RGV Field House. With the state playoffs loom-ing in, the state-ranked Lady Panthers (25-3) will hope-fully give Van Tilburg another chance to play at the UT-RGV Field House, as the Rio Grande Valley plays host for the regional tournament again. The senior has played varsity basketball for four seasons and averaged more 18.0 points a game and five blocks.

(McAllen, Tx) At one time, the Edinburg Bobcats was the team to beat year in and year out. Now, the Bobcats find themselves tied for last place in District 30-5A along with La Juarez-Lincoln with 1-12 records. Bothteams have been eliminated from the state basketball playoffs. For the Bobcats, their string of eight straight playoffs come to and end. Other teams that have been eliminated are the PSJA North Raiders, Mission Veterans, Weslaco, Weslaco East, and last year’s Class 5A Region IV semifinalist, Porter Cowboys (2-19).

(McAllen, Tx)- “This is it. We are a senior ball club,” says McAllen Nikki Rowe head coach Jose Yerba. “I would love to see our team play in the State 5A Region IV Tourna-ment in our backyard.” The 31-5A Warriors have been tested in 2013-14 by

defeating teams like San Edison (52-51), Smithson Valley (63-61), San Antonio Highlands (51-39), CC Ray (77-47), Vandegrift (77-69), CC Miller (66-59), San Antonio Holmes (50-37), and CC Carroll (63-48). Their only loss of the

season came against 26-5A San Antonio Churchill (26-3) 63-52 on November 14th at the Northside ISD Basketball Tournament. The Warriors went 8-1 against teams outside of the Rio Grande Valley. Last year, the Warriors lost to Brownsville Porter 67-51 in the State 5A Region Quarterfinals

but Yerba knows that his team will have to play harder once playoff time arrives next week. More than likely, the Warriors will meet either Brownsville Rivera or Hanna in the first round. The Warriors won the District 31-5A title and now it’s playoff time.

Mission Veterans Memorial Ashley Smith leads the Rio Grande Valley in scoring with 18.0 points per game. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

(Mission, Tx)-The Mission Veterans Memorial Lady Patriots qualified for the 2014 State 4A Basketball playoffs but they will have to settle for either third place or runner-ups after winning the title in 2013. In the playoffs, the Lady Patriots lost in the first round to Laredo Cigarroa 40-37. This year could be differ-ent with leading scorer Ashley Smith returning. In more action, Mercedes and Roma are the frontrunners for the 32-4A title and that will be determined next week. The Lady Gladiators are two games behind the Lady Tigers (13-1). In Class 5A, the Weslaco Lady Panthers (32-2) are 14-0 with two games left to play on their schedule. They have clinched a playoff spot along with Weslaco East and PSJA North in District 31-5A. The Lady Panthers advanced to the State 5A Region IV Tournament in 2013. The Harlingen Lady Cardinals are up by one game against Brownsville Veterans in District 32-5A for the title while Edin-burg Vela is holding on to a slim lead in District 30-5A. All three have clinched playoff spots.

Ready For The Playoffs?Which team will go all the way?

State Basketball Playoffs Begin...

We almost made it to the fourth round. That hurts when we had opportunities...“ Gus Sanchez

Hidalgo Head Coach

(McAllen, Tx)-The last time a team from the Rio Grande Val-ley made it “all the way” was back in 2009 when the Santa Rosa boys (27-6) team and Hi-dalgo Lady Pirates (37-3) both advanced to the University In-terscholastic League’s State Basketball Tournament in Aus-tin, Texas. Only one RGV dis-trict team from Region IV has won it all. “This is amazing and unbelievable,” said then-Lady Pirates head coach Monica Ro-driguez.

A week later, Santa Rosa High School made the trip to the Frank Erwin Center and be-came the second team to quali-fy for the 2009 UIL State Boys Basketball Tournament. Head coach Johnny Cipriano stood in amazement as he looked at the atmosphere that sur-rounded himself and his team. “Speechless are the only words I can share,” said Cipriano as he walked onto the basketball court of the Frank Erwin Cen-ter, home of the Texas Long-horns. However, one team did win it during March Madness. To make it to the state tourna-ment, sometimes it takes talent, and other times, it takes just pure luck. In the 2009 State 3A Region IV finals against heav-ily favorite West Oso, the Lady Pirates made two free throws at

the line after a foul call against West Oso. Jessica Olvera made her clutch baskets to win it 37-36 with less than :25 seconds to play. The winning free throws sent Rodriguez into a moment that she will never forget. The same happened with Santa Rosa against San Antonio Ran-dolph when the Warriors won on a last minute basket to win 63-62 in the Class 2A Regional Finals. To advance to the UIL State Basketball Tournament, teams have to win their regions. In Texas, the UIL has designated four regions that will have one winning team representing that region in any UIL sanctioned-sport. In Region IV, teams from the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Corpus Christi area, San Antonio-Seguin areas all compete for the title of Region

IV Champion and a spot in the state semifinals or “Final Four”. Last year, in the girls regional tournament, Harlingen and Weslaco both advanced to the regional semifinals and met Cibolo Steele and San Antonio Wagner. The game was played at the UT-RGV Field House in Edinburg before a near sell-out crowd. Steele defeated Har-lingen 64-34 while the Lady Panthers fell to Wagner 58-33. Steele would win the 5A Re-gion IV finals and advanced to the state tournament. In the boys Region IV semi-finals, Brownsville Porter lost to San Antonio Brandeis 72-61 at the UT-RGV Field House. Cibolo Steele defeated Laredo United 55-44. Steele won the Region IV boys title and ad-

vanced to the state tournament too. “You cannot make mental mistakes in the playoffs,” says McAllen Nikki Rowe Warriors head basketball coach Jose Yer-ba. “Every point counts.” In 2014, McAllen Nikki Rowe (27-1) and Edinburg North (26-2) seem to be on track to

make another playoff run. Both teams lost in

the boys regional quarterfinals in 2013. In the girls brackets, Weslaco (32-2) looks like a clear favorite to return to the

State 5A Re-gion IV Basketball Tournament with

frontrunners Harlingen, Edin-burg North, and Brownsville Veterans. In order to have two teams from the Rio Grande Valley representing Region IV in the finals, they first must beat Lar-edo-area teams in the first and second rounds. In boys Class 4A, Mercedes and Roma look like favorites to get to the third or fourth rounds in boys basket-ball while Hidalgo will favored to make another third round playoff appearance. The one team which did win it all was from District 31-3A. The Corpus Christi West Oso Bears boys team in 2011 de-feated Burkburnett 61-57 for the 3A title. The district was made up of CC Miller, Orange Grove, Lyford, Robstown, and Raymondville.

(Edinburg, Tx)- The University Interscholastic League awarded the Region IV-5A Basketball Tournament for the first time ever in 2013 and 2014 in the Valley. The winner of the Region IV

tournament qualifies for the State 5A Basketball Tournament in Austin, Texas at the Frank Erwin Center. In boys basketball, Brownsville Porter surprised the Rio Grande Valley by advancing to the semifinals along with Laredo United. Both teams lost to Ci-bolo Steele and San Antonio Brandeis. Steele defeated Brandeis 71-67 to advance to the State 5A semifinals. In the girls tourna-ment, Cibolo Steele defeated Harlingen 64-34 while Weslaco lost to San Antonio Wagner 58-33. Steele defeated Wagner 58-54 to advance to the state semifinals. Favored to make this year’s tournament in the boys bracket are the state-ranked No.11 McAllen Nikki Rowe Warriors (27-1) and the Weslaco Lady Panthers (32-2), also state-ranked No.23. Another team to watch will be the Harlingen Lady Cardinals (23-7) and Harlingen South Hawks (23-5) boys team. Both Edinburg North (25-2) and Edinburg Vela Lady Sabercats (22-8) could surprise teams early on in the state playoffs.

(Harlingen, Tx)-Atleast one prediction will be correct. No more Class 5A football playoff match ups between the Harlingen Car-dinals and Sharyland Rattlers once the University Interscholastic League announces the new realignments for the 2014-16 school years on February 3rd at the Region I Center in Edinburg, Texas. The UIL released the enrollment cutoffs with a new 6A Clas-sisfication and the elimination of the six-man football teams. The six-man class will now move up to Class 1A, which means that six-man football will no longer exsist. “The cutoffs for 6A was surprising because there are a lot of schools with enrollments of 3,000 plus students,” says head football coach Tony Villarreal of Weslaco High School. The Rio Grande Valley will feature three predicted 6A Districts and two 5A Districts. The biggest change will be in 5A with Sharyland moving down from 6A along with Donna and PSJA to compete with Edcouch-Elsa, Mercedes, and other old 4A schools. Both Donna and Sharyland opened new high schools with Donna North and Sharyland Pioneer high schools.

Playoff Rivalry Ends. The Sharyland Rattlers will move down to Class 5A while Har-lingen will move up to Class 6A, ending the playoff match-ups for the past two years. (HSSMImages/Alec Amador)

(McAllen, Tx)-The Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association re-leased the 2013 all-district football selections. Heading the list was 31-5A Offensive Player of the Year, Trevor Speights from McAl-len Memorial and Mercedes QB Rene Presas capturing the 32-4A Newcomer of the Year honors. Speights, only a sophomore rushed for 2,226 yards and scored 25 touchdowns while leading the Mustangs to the State 5A Divi-sion I Bi-District Championships against Harlingen. The unexpected occurred in early August when projected starting quarterback, senior Isaiah Garza was injured in an auto accident and was out for the season. Presas stepped in as the back up quar-terback, passing for 2,475 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Tigers and another playoff appearance in Class 4A.
